Organic and Inorganic: Nature Explorations with Textiles

1) 3 yards of medium weight white cotton and 1 yard of a habotai silk. You can bring more if you like.
You can often find the cotton in fabric stores for just a few dollars a yard on sale. Check the remnants
section, too. PRE-WASH AT HOME
2) A small selection of other fabrics to print on. Can include: light colors of cottons; simple cotton prints
that can be over-printed and over-dyed; scraps of other fabrics to experiment on. You can often find this
cotton in fabric stores for just a few dollars a yard on sale, or in quilt shops. Check the remnants section,
too. PRE-WASH AT HOME
3) 1 large bottle of Alene’s Tacky Glue
4) 2 old paint brushes (for glue) and 3-4 fairly new paintbrushes (for dyes)
5) Small plastic containers ie yogurt/baby food, other recycled containers (for glue and dyes)
6) An old cutting board or piece of wood or old tempered glass cutting board or big pieces of heavy mat
board or heavy cardboard, something to use as a palette/monoprinting board- Dimensions 16X20 or
thereabouts.
7) One container of 25’ aluminum foil from grocery store and 1 roll of freezer paper
8) Foam rollers- pick up a pack at any Home Depot, Lowe’s or craft store- various sizes
9) One pair of fabric scissors that cut fabric well, and one pair of paper scissors
10) One large sheet of posterboard such as kids use for school projects
11) 1 exacto knife and if possible, a self-healing board (instructor will bring one for class use, also)
12) A selection of sewing threads in colors you like
13) A selection of embroidery floss in colors you like IF you would like to incorporate hand embroidery
in your work
14) 1 embroidery needle
15) Embroidery hoop about 6” in diameter or larger
16) At least 6-7 bottles in colors of your choice of Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint 2.25 oz. jars available from
http://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/dye-na-flow-fabric-paint.html. The more colors the merrier!
17) Bits and pieces of textiles (can include laces, organza, recycled bits that have texture, yarn, textured
wallpaper scraps, laces) that you have at home
18) Texture bases. Can be something as simple as the netting from a bag of potatoes, bubble wrap, or as
complex as texture plates purchased from craft stores. You want things to put under your fabric to roll
dye over and get texture.
19) Blow dryer and extension cord
