NOV-DEC(1776) Redding Herald Increased Frequency of Cow Boy Attacks A Minute With Tim Meeker What was your reaction to the Rebels after your father was taken away? : I am quite mad at the Rebels since they took away my father, and I have lost all my admiration for them. KIDNAPPED (late NOV) Innocent people just trying to make a living by selling their cattle are now facing a new hardship along with the war: the Cow Boys. They are thieves who wait around in forests and other trails in hopes of blundering by a herd of cows and stealing the cattle and any other goods that the herders might have to feed the Rebels. These scoundrels are just stealing anything that “might” get sold to those to are loyal to the king of England. Recently, Eliphalet Meeker was captured, or kidnapped by the Cow Boys while he was scouting, leaving his son behind to take the rest of the goods home by himself. He was probably taken to a Rebel prison ship at the most. His son, Tim Meeker managed to trick the thieves that he encountered by lying to them by saying that his father had called escorts over to meet them. Tim said the three Cow Boys were arguing wether they should leave the stocks of beer and goods or just take the risk of stealing when a dog’s bark from the distance scared them away. Those underdogs don’t know how to play fair and will lay their hands on whatever they can get, just to obtain victory. The Continentals believe that they will gain freedom if they break away from our protector, King George the first. Cow Boy raids are occurring more and more often now, so traveling with a large group or calling some escorts might be a good idea in the snowy weather. Marie Kim How will your family manage without your father that the thieves ambushed? : My mother and I will have work in out tavern even on Sundays. I will have to drop out of school to take care of my family. SLAVE AUCTION ON REDDING SQUARE! At that time, the Hudson River was guarded by Fort Washington and Fort Lee, but General Howe managed to send ships past the forts with ease. The one is command of the forts at that time was Colonel Nathaniel Greene, who thought that he could hold up the fort with his 3000 men. A few days later on November 27th, General Howe got past the fort’s defenses without breaking a sweat and the British broke into the fort. They took the fort and two thousand seven hundred twenty-two patriots along with them as captives. Howe also pursued Washington and his forces down to New Jersey, but Washington got away across the Delaware River with an unorganized army all in a panic to run away. The American army was in a bad state with a small amount of guns, barley any provisions to eat, and no tents to sleep in, with soldiers slipping in and out of the army without any notice. Kelly Asbury Battle Of Trenton (Dec 26th) Washington crossed the Delaware River in a bleak freezing day and surprised the British at Trenton. The attack was made by around 2400 men, mainly directed to Hessian Garrison. This was America’s first ever victory in the war, which helped them raise their morales a bit. WELCOME TO THE MEEKER’S TAVERN! serving rum, beer, dinner, and other assorted goods Open to both the Reds and Rebels (commissary notes are acceptable) He attacked on Christmas night and killed a British commander, Colonel Rall. The British were driven out and some were taken as prisoners of the war. A few days later an American fleet under Colonel Caldwater that was supposed to have met up with General Washington crossed the Delaware. His troops were two days late and all they did was occupy the empty town of Burlington. However, the British lines are not discouraged and they will settle the scores as soon as they can gather enough men to carry out the task.
