From the Principal
On behalf of the staff, I would

with someone for half, almost
350, of the students at CMS.

Second quarter ends Friday,
January 23rd, with 2nd quarter
grade printouts going home with
students on Friday, January
From the Assistant Principal
The weather is changing and it is starting to feel more like winter everyday. Before you know it
we will be on Winter Break and celebrating a new year, 2015.
Our first social was well attended by 339 students. Our second social will be held on December
12th from 3:30 to 6:00PM and the spirit day is Pajama Day. Students must be on honor level 1 or 2 with
no overdue library books, fees or fines in order to attend. Socials provide many activities for our students
to enjoy such as open gym, game room, movie room and a D.J. in the commons. Tickets can be purchased
for $5.00 or $3.00 with an ASB card at the student store the week of the social. If you are interested in
volunteering during socials please call the middle school office.
The ASB student council continues to be busy. In November, Mrs. Lofgren and the leadership
students spearheaded a charity fundraiser for veterans and their families. We sold customized dog tags
to students and also received donations from students and staff. We were able to raise $500, which was
donated to the Fisher House Foundation on JBLM. They are also planning for an upcoming canned food
drive, student assemblies, advisory competition days, and future spirit days.
Be in the Know...
Classes are implementing technology daily and are expanding their learning experiences beyond the classroom. All
students have been given a IXL account which helps them in
their math skills. Students can access IXL from home as
well as school.
Mr. Moodenbaugh’s art classes are now using iPads in understanding art and developing
art projects.

From the Nurse:
You do not want to keep a child home unnecessarily if he/she
really is not sick, but you also do not want to send a child who is
truly sick to school. A decision must be made as to whether the
child goes home or to school! Good attendance is important for
establishing good work habits and a positive attitude toward
school, as well as for academic success in school.
Fever: A fever is a warning sign that all is not right with the
body. The best way to check for fever is with a thermometer,
which every home should have! No child with a temperature
over 100’ should be sent to school. As the body temperature is
lower in the morning, 99’ may be a warning sign of illness. Do
not allow your child to return to school until he/she has
been free of fever for 24 hours (his/hers normal temperature
without medication).
Stomachache: Consult your doctor if your child has a stomachache that is persistent (more than 24 hrs.) or severe enough to
limit activity. If vomiting occurs, keep your child home until
food and water can be kept down for 24 hours.
Leadership Club
Leadership Club meets on Mondays during Core/Flex. They are busy planning
upcoming events. Here are some that
you’ll want to make note of:
CANDY CANE

Lost & FOUND
Has your student lost their new school coat?
Or perhaps their lunchbox? We have accumulated a few items that need to go back to
their owner. Please have your student check
lost & found. Any items left at Winter
Break will be donated.
During the Advisory competition on December 12th,
students can choose to make
a homemade tree ornament to put on our
school’s tree in the commons. If you decide to participate, all you need to do is
use supplies you have at home and create
an appropriate ornament. No need to
spend any $$$. Be creative!!!

Preparing Our Students Through Advisory
One of the instructional strategy goals for the Chehalis School District is that
“Students exit the Chehalis School District genuinely prepared to succeed in college or a
meaningful career by earning a diploma acknowledging this preparedness.” One way we are
working towards this goal at Chehalis Middle School is through our advisory system.
Advisory at CMS is a time where a smaller number of students routinely connect with a specific staff member (advisor)
throughout the year. Advisory is twenty-six minutes long and
takes place between second and third period once a week. During
the month of September, advisory met daily and students reviewed the student handbook, became familiar with school expectations, learned about online safety, and focused on anti-bullying
behavior.
Our advisory groups are divided by grade level at CMS. The 6th grade advisory classes
are exploring the life skills needed in order to be a successful high school student. They are
also connecting skills and interests to future career options. The 7th grade advisory classes
are using the Washington State Career Guidance curriculum. Their lessons focus on planning for high school and beyond as well as learning about their individual strengths, interests and skills. The 8th grade advisory classes are using a new system this year called Naviance. This system is an online college and career readiness application that is also being
used at W.F. West High School. Some of the 8th grade lessons include information about career paths, getting ready for high school, and exploring financial aid options.

This December our annual tradition of bringing children’s
theatre to our community will once again come alive on
stage with the production of Disney’s Mulan:
The Fa family ancestors take us back to ancient China
where Mulan is preparing to meet the village Matchmaker. Mulan's father Fa Zhou prays to the family ancestors that Mulan will not “mess up” this big day for the family. A nervous Mulan wrecks her betrothal
ceremony, dishonoring the family and making herself feel terrible. Fa Zhou is unexpectedly called to fight
for China. Already having been wounded in battle and having no son to join for him, Fa Zhou accepts his
duty to fight for China despite Mulan’s wish not to. Against her father's command, Mulan steals Fa Zhou's
armor, dresses as a boy and runs away from home to fight in his place. The ancestors have no choice but to
send the misfit dragon Mushu to stop Mulan, who will be killed if she is discovered.
As Shan-Yu and the Huns prepare to attack China, Mushu helps Mulan act like a soldier. Mulan introduces herself as "Ping” and endures Captain Shang's grueling training. The Chinese soldiers march to
defend a mountain village from Shan-Yu, but arrive too late. While mourning the loss of the villagers, the
Huns attack. Mulan triggers an avalanche which covers the Huns and saves the soldiers. Shang honors
Ping, only to discover that she is really a girl. He spares Mulan's life for saving his but leaves her behind to
go home.
Suddenly, Shan-Yu and the Huns emerge from the avalanche and race toward the Imperial City. Mulan goes ahead to warn Shang. At the Emperor's Palace, the Chinese people celebrate the defeat of the
Huns. While Shang ignores Mulan’s warning about the Huns, Shan-Yu surprises and kidnaps the Emperor. Mulan convinces the Chinese soldiers to dress as women to distract Shan-Yu so they can save the Emperor. Mulan defeats Shan-Yu and the Huns retreat. The Emperor honors Mulan's bravery to everyone's
surprise and delight. Back at home, Fa Zhou welcomes his beloved, and honorable, daughter back
home. At home, Shang surprises Mulan with a visit as a suitor. For saving the Fa family honor, the ancestors welcome Mushu into the Fa family temple as a full-fledged guardian.
Mulan performs in the W.F. West Theatre at W.F. West High School on:
Friday, December 5th at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, December 6th at 2:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.
Friday, December 12th at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, December 13th at 2:00 p.m.. & 7:30 p.m.
Seats ($6.00) will be on sale in the high school A.S.B. office beginning November 10th and, if not
sold out, at the door before each performance. For any additional information please call 807-7235.
