Driver guides will not only drive a motorcoach, but research and deliver an educational and entertaining tour for their guests. Tours range from short day excursions to extended adventures through Alaska and the Yukon. May through September You will meet interesting people from around the world, while earning a competitive seasonal wage. Our season spans from May through September, during which you will help provide our guests with an unmatched adventure, and together, experience Alaska in a way you will never forget. Gain Professional Experience We believe our summertime employees in Alaska accomplish far more than simply earning a paycheck. Dedicated individuals develop public speaking skills, problem solving abilities, and intangible leadership skills that will continue to help them throughout their professional lives. As an employee, you will gain exposure to a world class customer service environment, sometimes leading to long-term careers in the hospitality industry. CDL and Tour Development Training Our commercial driver training program is a comprehensive, company paid course that combines both classroom and behind the wheel instruction to ensure you will have the skills necessary to succeed as a driver guide. Our CDL training program takes approximately 100 hours. Housing expenses (double occupancy room) during the training programs (Alaska locations only) are paid by HAP. Upon successful training completion, you will have a class B commercial license with a passenger endorsement and extensive local tour development training. Half the cost of the CDL licensing fee will also be reimbursed upon successful contract completion. 4 Compensation Wage: The wage for Driver Guides varies by location since some Alaska based positions offer On- Site Employee Housing, while others require employees to establish their own housing arrangements. On-site Employee Housing- Denali, McKinley and Skagway offer the following wages based on years of service: 1st year- $10.50, 2nd year-$11.50, 3rd year-$12.00 and 4th year-$12.50. On Your Own Housing- Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Ketchikan offer the following wages based on years of service: 1st year- $11.00, 2nd year- $12.00, 3rd year- $12.50 and 4th year$13.00. End of Season Bonus: We offer an end of season bonus based on every regular hour and overtime hour worked in season, this does not include pre-season training requirements. This is paid upon successful completion of the seasonal work agreement. Bonuses are usually issued during the last week of October and vary in amount based on years of service and number of hours worked. Safety Bonus: You may also earn up to an additional 5% of gross pay beyond the contract bonus. Employees working in a commercial driver capacity must successfully complete the work season without Compliance Safety and Accountability (CSA) violations or internal violations. Employees who do have violations may receive a reduced portion of this safety incentive. 1st year = 5% Safety + 3% End of Season = 8% max 2nd year = 5% Safety + 5% End of Season= 10% max 3rd year = 5% Safety + 6% End of Season= 11% max 4th year = 5% Safety + 7% End of Season= 12% max *Returning drivers “grand fathered” into old program offered in 2014. Remote Highway Assignment Bonus: Upon successful contract completion, Drivers who operate the Denali, North Klondike, and Taylor Highways are eligible for the Remote Highway Bonus. These roads are remote destinations that require a high level of skill and responsibility. Each time a driver transports revenue guests on these roads, he or she will accumulate $25 per group that will be added to the end of season bonus. (This will not apply to a deadhead.) Referral Bonus: A $200 Referral Bonus will be awarded to each employee who refers a friend to HAP Alaska Yukon. Both employees must successfully complete each of their seasonal work agreement. Transferable college credits: Three fully transferable college credits are also available for $90 to Driver Guides who complete the training course. Per Diem: There is an $18 per diem for overnight assignments. Gratuities: Guests are encouraged to tip their motorcoach driver-guides for a safe, informative journey at their discretion. 5 The Benefits of our Locations Many of our facilities are remote and located several miles away from the nearest urban center, yet close to some of the world’s most impressive recreational areas. Virtually, all of our summer employees take advantage of many outdoor benefits, such as river rafting, camping, fishing, hiking, etc. Travel Assistance If you travel from outside of Alaska to work with us, several options exist to assist with travel expenses: A $550 relocation bonus is offered to any Driver Guide who travels to Alaska to work and successfully completes his or her seasonal work agreement. This will be paid out at the end of October for qualified employees. Or, a company-paid round, round trip flight from Seattle to your Alaska destination. You may also choose a three part deduction from your first paychecks to assist with the upfront costs of getting to Alaska. This is when we book your flight from your home base to your Alaskan destination, and deduct the cost out of your pay check in three increments. This option would be used in conjunction with either the round trip flight from Seattle, or the $550.00 relocation bonus. Seasonal Employee Benefits HAP Alaska Yukon seasonal employees are eligible to participate in a variety of rewarding programs, including customer service recognition, company sponsored social events, community service, and the opportunity to discover Alaska through specially discounted rates on local excursions. Employees are also extended industry unique cruising privileges, which allows them to cruise onboard Princess ships at deeply discounted voyage rates while enjoying significant onboard discounts. In addition, employees are eligible for discounts on Princess land and cruise tours and Alaska lodging, motorcoach, and rail packages. Special corporate air rates for their flights to and from port cities are also available. Through a sister company relationship, employees may also cruise onboard Holland America Line ships at discounted voyage rates. 6 Earn College Credit Employees who are enrolled in our Commercial Driver Training Program, in Alaska and out of state, can register with the University of Alaska Summer Sessions Program to receive 3 credits for ABUS 267, the Transportation and Logistics Management course in the Applied Business Department from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. We are the first tour company in Alaska where students can earn university credits (fully transferable) by completing the commercial driver training program. Contact your hiring manager for registration information. 7 Anchorage Motorcoach & Guest Services Division Alaska’s largest city holds a large percentage of the state’s population and offers all of the modern conveniences of any major city. This city of nearly 300,000 is uniquely placed between the mountains of Chugach State Park, the nation’s largest state park, and the waters of the Cook Inlet. Anchorage offers spectacular views along with some of Alaska’s favorite summer time activities. Backpacking, biking, hiking trails and fishing are part of the summer time culture. Modern skyscrapers and buildings are intermingled within the wonderful park and trail system that bring you up close to Alaska’s pioneer past. 8 Anchorage Housing Options Room/Board RV Sites Apartments/Rentals On-site housing is not available at the Anchorage Motorcoach Division. Several RV parks are located in the area. The Anchorage School District has a Camper Host Program from mid-May thru mid-August. Contact your hiring manager for more information. There are apartments for rent close to the main office. Many are within walking or biking distance. The Anchorage Transportation Department will provide listings to interested applicants. Shift Information Average Work Week 50 - 55 hours per week with 1-2 days off, varied days/times Out of Town Shifts There are out of town shifts that typically range from 1 to 5 nights. Anchorage provides transportation for guests that are traveling to and from the ports of Seward and Whittier, Denali, Kenai Princess Lodge, McKinley Princess Lodge, and Copper Princess Lodge. If the driver is sent out of town overnight, meal per diems are paid at $18 per day. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available in Anchorage throughout each week. Shift times vary, but on average they extend from 8-12 hours per day. There are quite a few early morning (as early as 3am) and late evening shifts available (as late as 1am). Some shifts can be as short as 3 hours and some shifts up to 15 hours. Other Information Full time and part time positions are available. Preference is given to drivers available to work full season dates. Motorcoach drivers may be asked to drive passenger vans or sprinters. Local Transportation Public Transportation Shop Location Anchorage does have public transportation, although it is limited around the area of the main office. There are many apartments within walking distance. Most employees prefer to use a bike for the summer months. 6441 Interstate Circle Anchorage, AK 99518 (Shop is located near the International Airport) 9 Denali Motorcoach & Guest Services Division HAP Alaska Yukon’s Denali Transportation Division is based just outside of Denali National Park and Preserve featuring two of the largest hotels in the state. The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the McKinley Chalet Resort are located one mile north of the entrance to Denali National Park on the banks of the Nenana River. The hotel properties are about two hours south of Fairbanks and about five hours north of Anchorage. Denali National Park and Preserve has over six million acres of wilderness that can be explored on bus tours, shuttles or on foot. We provide our Holland and Princess guests with free shuttles to the National Park entrance attractions, as well as shuttles to popular tours, such as jet-boat and dog cart rides, along with being the jumping off point for other excursions such as flight-seeing, golfing, rafting, atv’s, etc. 10 Denali Housing Options Room/Board On-site housing is available and room/board is taken directly out of your paycheck. The 2015 rate for the cost for Employee housing (food and all utilities included) is $15 per day. There are 3 Employee Dining Facilities. Rooms Amenities Rooms are double occupancy; some have en-suite bathrooms, while others have communal bathrooms. Each room comes provided with all needed linens, dresser, TV, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and more. Commons Areas/Rec Room In the commons areas, there are couches to sit and visit. There is also a recreation room that has ping pong and pool tables, private rooms for gaming with large screen TVs, and board games. There is also a brand new stadium seating theater for movie nights. Outside there is a half-court basketball area, and a grassy area for other games/activities. RV Sites Several RV parks are located in the area. Contact your hiring manager for more information. Apartments/Rentals Generally, rentals are not available in the area Shift Information Average Work Week Approximately 45-50 hours per week with 1-2 days off Out of Town Shifts A few Driver-Guides will drive out-of-town day tours (based on experience and application process). An employee shuttle will also drive between Denali and Fairbanks once a week. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available in Denali throughout each week. Shifts times vary and on average extend from 7-11 hours per day. Other Information Some Driver-guide shifts in Denali include On Property Shuttle Driver, Employee Shuttle Driver, and Guest Transfer Driver. Contact your hiring manager for more information. Local Transportation Public Transportation Although no public transportation is available in Denali, the employee shuttle does run between the Main Lodges and the neighboring town of Healy where the housing complex is located. Once a week an employee shuttle to Fairbanks is offered on a space available basis for $5. Shop Location The Transportation Office is located on the McKinley Chalet Resort property. The Motorcoach Shop is located near employee housing in Healy. 11 Fairbanks Motorcoach & Guest Services Division Fairbanks is located in Alaska’s interior, where the state’s major roadways intersect. This makes Fairbanks the gateway to the interior, the Arctic, and Denali National Park. The city itself has a population of about 35,000 people. Its interior location provides easy access to wilderness and recreation while still boasting many of the amenities of home. Fairbanks employs about 180 seasonal employees, including approximately 70 Driver Guides. 12 Fairbanks Housing Options Room/Board RV Sites Apartments/Rentals On-site housing is not available at the Fairbanks Motorcoach Division. Several RV parks are located in the area. Contact your hiring manager for more information. Local rentals start at $500 for room shares and $800 per month for one bedroom apartments (utilities included). Prices vary depending on your necessities and location. Rental cabins in the area are also common and are usually less expensive. Shift Information Average Work Week Fairbanks Motorcoach Division operates 24/7 mid-May through the end of the season. A full season employee may average 40-60 hours a week, over the course of the season. Schedules vary throughout the week. Out of Town Shifts Many Fairbanks Driver Guides lead tours between Denali and Fairbanks. This is a day trip that covers 260-300 miles and very common for first year drivers. Fairbanks also has the largest selection of overnight, or Highway tours. Seasoned drivers may complete multi-day tours to Copper River/Valdez, and Anchorage. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available in Fairbanks throughout each week. Shift times vary and, on average, extend from 8-11 hrs per day with some shifts as short as 4 hours and some shifts as long as 15 hours. Other Information Driver Guide shifts may include driving Guest shuttle routes, providing airport/rail transfers, day tours within Fairbanks, day tours outside of Fairbanks, and long distance tours with overnight stays out of town. If the Driver Guide is sent out of town, meal per diems are available to claim. $18 per day per diem. Local Transportation Public Transportation Shop Location Public transportation is available throughout the city. The Fairbanks office is located about 2 miles from the downtown area. The office is also about 5 miles from the largest shopping area including a mall, Wal-Mart Supercenter, and several other large commercial stores. Due to the hours of operations for the public transportation system, a bicycle is a great option for local transportation to and from work. The Fairbanks division is located at 3401 Lathrop St. Fairbanks, AK 99701 13 Mt. McKinley Motorcoach & Guest Services Division The Mt. McKinley Transportation Division operates out of the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. The Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge is a private land holding within Denali State Park. We are located 15 miles from Trapper Creek and two hours from Denali National Park. We have a Guest Services Office in the town of Talkeetna, which is one hour from the Lodge. From the decks of the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge you have the opportunity to view Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, located only 38 miles from the lodge. 14 Mt. McKinley Housing Options Room/Board Room & Board is taken directly out of each paycheck. 2014 rate was $15.00 per day room and board. RV Sites Mt. McKinley Lodge has a limited number of RV sites available at no cost to the employee. Each site includes power, water, sewer, cable TV and phone hook-ups. Apartments/Rentals Generally, rentals are not available in the area Shift Information Average Work Week 45-50 hours per week with 1-2 days off Out of Town Shifts Driver Guides are back at the McKinley Lodge each night. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available at McKinley throughout each week. Shift times vary and on average a daily shift will last 9 hours. Some shifts may be as short as 5 hours and as long as 12 hours. Other Information Typical Driver Guide shifts at the McKinley Motorcoach Division include transporting guests between Talkeetna (100 miles roundtrip) and Denali (200 miles roundtrip). Drivers also make frequent trips to Anchorage (280 miles round trip). Drivers are also required to operate the Guest Shuttle looping around the Lodge property. Local Transportation Public Transportation Although no public transportation is available in McKinley, an employee shuttle runs on a weekly basis between McKinley and the city of Anchorage, 2 1/2 hours away, or Wasilla, 1 ½ hours away. Shop Location The McKinley Transportation Office is located at the McKinley Princess Lodge. 15 Juneau Motorcoach & Guest Services Division Alaska’s capital is the state’s third largest city with approximately 32,000 people. Juneau is a coastal town, nestled between the 1,500 square mile Juneau Ice field and Gastineau Channel. The city is accessible only by airplane or boat. While somewhat remote, Juneau has all of the amenities of a mid-sized city. Endless trails depart from town taking you into some of the most pristine wilderness in the country. The Mendenhall Glacier, the most photographed glacier in Alaska, is located within the city limits. Juneau prides itself in its history dating back to the late 1800′s when gold was discovered in a nearby creek. 16 Juneau Housing Options Apartment/Rentals There are many options for housing due to the seasonal nature of the Legislative Session, which complements the tourism season. We can help you with referrals for local housing options or you may look for housing independently, allowing you the freedom to choose your roommates and housemates. Additionally, a limited housing option is available on a first come first serve basis. You may search apartment listings in our local newspaper, the Juneau Empire, by logging onto www.juneauempire.com. RV Sites Several RV parks are located in the area. Contact your hiring manager for more information. Shift Information Average Work Week Approximately 40-50 hours per week. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available each week. Shift times vary and on average extend from 6-14 hrs per day. There some early morning and late evening shifts. Other Information Hiring preference is given to drivers with full season dates (May through September). Motorcoach drivers may be asked to drive passenger vans or 14 passenger shuttles. Shop Location 151 Mill Street, Juneau, AK 99801 - approximately 1 mile from the heart of downtown Juneau. 17 Ketchikan Motorcoach & Passenger Services Division Ketchikan (a.k.a. the Salmon Capital of the world) with a population of 8,000 is the first city northbound along the Inside Passage of Alaska, located near the southern end of the Tongass National Forest. Native heritage is an important part of life in Ketchikan where traditions of totem pole carving and cedar box artwork are still practiced crafts using traditional methods passed down from generation to generation. The community of Ketchikan is very warm and welcoming to visitors and summer residents alike. A walk, or paddle, up Creek Street is always entertaining, especially during one of the many salmon runs through town. There are numerous outdoor recreational opportunities especially fishing, hiking, and camping. Free tours and discounted boat rentals are available to employees on days off. 18 Ketchikan Housing Options Room/Board We provide housing for fulltime Driver/Guides on a first hired first serve basis. Housing is located in downtown Ketchikan, approximately 3 miles from our office. The cost is $9.50/day for 1st year drivers and includes wireless internet and large screen cable television. Ketchikan’s Transit System, "The Bus,” has a stop in front of our office and is an excellent mode of transportation all over the island. Apartments/Rentals There are numerous apartments for rent throughout town and many are within walking or biking distance of our office. The Ketchikan Transportation Department will assist in providing leads for housing. Shift Information Average Work Week Approximately 45-50 hours per week with 1-2 days off. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available each week. Shift times vary and are typically 6-12 hrs per day. There are some early morning and early evening shifts. Other Information Hiring preference is given to drivers with full season dates (May through September). Motorcoach drivers may occasionally be asked to drive smaller passenger vehicles. Shop Location Located at 2871 S Tongass Highway, Ketchikan, AK 99901, approximately 3 miles from downtown Ketchikan. There is an ocean side walking and bike path most of the way town. 19 Skagway Motorcoach & Passenger Services Division This small Alaskan port town, situated at the north end of Lynn Canal, has a population of 800 year-round and 1,400 summer residents. Skagway is a popular destination with over 750,000 visitors a year, who come for the history that dates back to 1898 and the Klondike Gold rush. Over 100,000 people passed through the town in search of gold. The town still retains much of that turn-of-the-century charm. For the adventurous, the Chilkoot Trail awaits. This trail led prospectors up and over the mountains through some of the roughest terrain known to man. The historic trail still displays relics left behind from those prospectors over 100 years ago. 20 Skagway Housing Options Room/Board RV Sites We provide housing for all seasonal employees. Housing is located within 2 miles of all work locations. The cost is $8.00/day. All rooms are double occupancy. Limited RV parks are located in the area. Contact your hiring manager for more information. Apartments/Rentals There are other housing possibilities in Skagway if you prefer not to live in company housing. Please contact your hiring manager for assistance. Room/Board We provide housing for all seasonal employees. Housing is located within 2 miles of all work locations. The cost is $8.00/day. All rooms are double occupancy. Shift Information Average Work Week Approximately 50-55 hours per week with 1-2 days off. Out of Town Shifts There are out of town shifts that typically range from 4 to 7 nights. Skagway provides transportation for guests that are traveling to and from Dawson and Whitehorse. If the driver is sent out of town overnight, meal per diems are paid at $18 per day. If chosen for highway program $25 per revenue run bonus will be applied to end of season bonus. Average Daily Shifts A variety of shifts are available throughout each week. An average shift is 10 hours in length.
