Registration Deadline: December 5, 2016 ~ Discounts available for groups or multiple workshops ~ Introduction to Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art® January 9, 2017 8:00 am – 3:30 pm $195.00* This introductory workshop teaches the foundations of Artists/Writers Workshop and the Picturing Writing process. Teachers will experience a proven multimodal approach to teaching writing that uses quality picture books as mentor texts and simple crayon resist art techniques to teach the art of writing. Teachers will participate in a progression of art-‐and-‐literature-‐based writing lessons. The morning session will cover the foundational Picturing Writing Time of Day Unit (for writing descriptive passages); the afternoon session will cover Weather Poetry. Both units can be easily transferred to a variety of curriculum topics. Designed to engage all learners, this dynamic visual approach to teaching writing has proven to foster critical reading and writing skills for students with diverse learning styles. NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Picturing Writing Winter Story Unit January 10, 2017 8:00 am – 3:30 pm $195.00* The Picturing Writing Winter Story Unit teaches the key elements of crafting narrative—in pictures and in words. Picturing Writing storyboards, accordion folder, and specially design brainstorming sheets will help teachers and students address each story element with a clear sense of literary purpose. A variety of simple winter snow techniques will be added to the crayon resist process to increase the use of descriptive language. Quality picture books will serve as mentor texts for both art and writing lessons. The underlying structure of narrative writing has never been made so clear and concrete before. NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! BEST IF TAKEN AS A FOLLOW-‐UP TO INTRODUCTION TO PICTURING WRITING. Picturing Writing Research-Based Animal Poetry January 11, 2017 8:00 am – 3:30 pm $195.00* The Picturing Writing Research-‐Based Animal Poetry Unit offers teachers a dynamic model for integrating Picturing Writing into the science and/or social studies curriculum while exploring the genres of poetry, informational writing, and reflective writing. As recommended in the ELA Core Standards, this inquiry-‐based unit of study provides a structure for small research projects that involve conducting written and visual research and embedding facts into both image and text. Working with the theme of animals in their habitat, teachers will create their own crayon resist research-‐based animal poetry tri-‐fold that can be used as a model for designing other integrated curriculum inquiry-‐based units of study. NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! INTRODUCTION TO PW RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED. Picturing Writing Research-Based Animal Poetry & Stories January 11 & 12, 2016 8:00 am – 3:30 pm $350.00* This two-‐day workshop covers two research-‐based units of study. Dovetailing on the Research-‐Based Animal Poetry Workshop, the Animal Story Unit addresses additional ELA Core Standards by combining informational and narrative reading and writing. Designed to reach a wide range of learners, this unit uses quality picture books as mentor texts as students conduct visual and written research as well as practice close reading (of text and image), drawing inferences, and citing evidence. The story unit also involves analyzing story elements (as expressed in both illustrations and text) and crafting a fact-‐based narrative in pictures and words. ELA Core Standards in Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Language, and Media Skills are all seamlessly woven throughout these dynamic units as participants learn how to create art and writing with clear literary purpose. NO PREVIOUS ART EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
