Acrostic Poetry Assignment What is an Acrostic Poem? An acrostic poem is a poem where certain letters in each line spells out a word or phrase. Typically, the first letters of a line are used to spell the message; but, they can appear anywhere. So, what is my assignment? Today you will create TWO acrostic poems: one about yourself, and one about any character from your novel. This counts as a quiz grade, 50 points for each poem. Here are the steps you need to follow to complete this assignment: 1. Complete the “Who am I” template for yourself. Fill up each box with at least 3-5 items about yourself. 2. Now, go back and look at what you have written. Highlight or underline those items about yourself that you feel are the most important. Ask yourself the following questions: Do my highlighted items have anything in common? Is there a common subject or idea? For example, some of the things you feel are important about you might be related to family, friends, your pet, sports, or school. 3. If you had to choose one and only one word to describe yourself, what would it be? Write this at the BOTTOM of your personal inventory chart. 4. Begin drafting your poem. You have two options for formatting: Use your name as the word that is spelled down. Use a theme word (or the word you used in #3) as the word that is spelled down. Consider the following different ways to make an acrostic poem: An acrostic poem Creates a challenge Random words on a theme Or whole sentences that rhyme Select your words carefully To form a word from top to bottom Is the aim of this poetry style Choose a word then go!
