ISSUE NO 46– 5th November 2013 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello to all in the St Brigid’s community, Term 4, Week 5 This Sunday is the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time As we near the end of the Liturgical Year we near the end of Jesus’ public ministry. In today’s Gospel Jesus has reached Jerusalem and thus he is nearing the end of his earthly life. The readings today start to speculate about death and resurrection. We start November with All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day when we remember all those who have lived and loved before us. We are filled with hope and confidence that our loved ones are experiencing the afterlife as evidenced by Jesus’ resurrection and by his promise of eternal life to us. As we prepare for the end of one Liturgical Year and the commencement of another when Advent starts in a few weeks we are forced to think and wonder, as it is part of being human, about what happens after death. Our Faith teaches us, just as one year ends and another starts, that it is the end of an earthly life but also the start of a new life in Heaven. What’s on over the coming week This week we will complete the annual Exiting Census of Brisbane Catholic Education Schools. This data collects destination data on all students exiting St Brigid’s and all other BCE Schools. This data is used to inform long term planning at the Archdiocesan level to assist with provision of Catholic schooling. Assembly prayer this week was led by Year 2B whilst 2C will lead next week’s. On Tuesday we will mark the 2013 Melbourne cup with a Free Dress day. All funds raised will go the Boonzaayer family. On Wednesday the 2013 School Board AGM will commence at 6:00. Good luck to our Year Five students who will be on camp at Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre from Wednesday to Friday. We will host a visit on Friday from our Prep students 2014 for their orientation session commencing at 9:30 am. Swimming lessons will commence next week for students in Years 1-7. Please consult the Parent Portal for more detailed information. Next Tuesday our Year 7 team will represent St Brigid’s at the Gold Coast Catholic Schools’ Readers’ Cup at St Augustine’s School Currumbin. On Wednesday next week our surf athletes will represent St Brigid’s at the Gold Coast Catholic Schools’ Aquathon at Currumbin Beach. Our annual Awards Night will take place Thursday next week commencing at 6:30 pm in the MPA. Developing Children's Strengths (Part 1) End of year ceremonies and prizegivings can be hard for some children as they watch friends, classmates and siblings carry off prizes when they know they have worked hard too and done their best. Doing things for their own reward is a concept we learn as we grow older. While children are young, we can help them develop and grow by placing the focus on their strengths, the greatest of which are qualities of character because they are what will see them through the challenges of life. Focus on children’s strengths instead of their weaknesses. Notice children's strengths and talk about them. It can be frustrating to work only on weaknesses and problems. Young people may become defensive and lacking in motivation, as adults do when they are constantly being criticised. Children may misbehave but they may also be enthusiastic, creative or curious. If you focus on their positive attributes, their strengths are likely to increase and their weaknesses will become less obvious. Focus on character strengths instead of achievement. This can have a more positive effect on a child’s confidence. Not every young person can get A grades or get A grades all the time. Children develop at different rates. But every child has the potential to develop their character strengths, for example, to use their sense of humour, to be braver, or kinder. “The most important character strengths for our wellbeing and happiness have been found to be gratitude, optimism, enthusiasm, curiosity and love. If we are to encourage children to have long term happiness and fulfilment, we should be encouraging them to develop these strengths in particular.” Park, N. & Peterson, C. (2008). Positive psychology and character strengths: Application to strengths-based school counselling. Professional School Counselling, 12(2): 85-92 Recognising Strengths Make a point of noticing strengths in children and compliment them on, or thank them for, their strengths. Children respond well to this recognition and want to use their strengths even more. For example: § Thank a child for their honesty in admitting to a mistake. § Congratulate a child on their perseverance in getting a task finished. § Say how much you enjoy their humour when a child makes you laugh. § Point out their fairness when they treat their friends equally. § Tell them how kind they are being when they do a favour without being asked. § Tell them they have good self-control when they are able to wait for a treat. § Show them you are proud of them when they forgive their sister, brother or classmate for having upset them. § Celebrate good teamwork. § Tell a child they are showing great courage when you see them coping with a difficult situation. § Look out for glimmers that you can fan into a brighter characteristic. “We change the world by tiny, individual acts of honesty, courage, kindness and integrity, by celebrating our own strengths, just a little more each day, and helping others to do the same.” Jenny Fox Eades Acknowledgement: Handson Scotland 1:1 Computer Program Next year we plan to start a 1:1 computer program. Initially, for all students in Year 4 in 2014 a tablet computer will be made available for their use at school. The computer will also be available to be taken home after a suitable period of learning how to use and care for the device. An information session for all parents of children currently in Year 3 was held last week. Literature for those parents unable to attend was distributed the next day. There is a response section which needs to be completed and returned to the respective Year 3 class teachers by November 15. It would be appreciated if this could be attended to by the due date. A copy of the letter is available on the Parent Portal. Free Dress Day On Melbourne Cup day we will be staging a free dress day to raise funds for the Boonzaayer family. As you would be aware Gary was killed in the recent boat explosion and fire on the Gold Coast. Gary is the father of Ruby in Year 3. Please see the Year 3 news for further information and the various ways of donating. School Wide Positive Behaviour Support This week we will be expanding on Rule #1: Respect for Others by concentrating on transitions to and from the toilets. Traditionally, at school, toilets can be very busy at key times during the day. It is important for children to be aware of others as they transit in and out of the toilets during the day. Parish News from Fr Rafal One more reminder, that traditionally in the Roman Catholic Church, in November we remember, pray and offer Masses for our deceased family members and friends. In St Brigid’s Parish we will continue this beautiful tradition. At the back of the Church there are available special envelopes for November Mass Intentions. Until the end of the year on Saturdays after 9am Mass we will have the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. At the end of that period of time people will need to make the decision if we will continue it. I hope you like the latest additions to our Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Almost all is ready; just a few details need to be done. So I would like to invite all parishioners to the Blessing of the Icon of St Brigid – the last piece of art for our Blessed Sacrament Chapel. This will take place on Sunday the 17th of November during the 8.30am Mass. Please click here to access this week's Parish newsletter. Car Park Blues An extract from a letter from frustrated parent ‘The drop off system in the morning is wonderful, when everyone complies with the system. However there are some who think that they can park there and run off to the office or have a good old “chin wag” and then there are the mums & dads that have a little one who needs more encouragement to trot off to school, and hold up the line of cars streaming down the drive way’ Could I endorse the sentiment and ask parents that if they need to alight from their vehicles to please find a designated car par space to do so. Green Boot Award To avoid car park congestion and associated frustrations as evidenced above why not try to adopt an Active School Travel mode of transport to or from school? · Public Transport · · Bicycle, scooter or skate board Car pooling · · Park and walk Or walking all the way where practical Our monthly Green Boot award for the class demonstrating commitment to the Active School Travel philosophy th will be decided on data collected on Wednesday October 6 . School Fees 2014 Brisbane Catholic Education Council has recommended a 2.1% increase in fees and building fund levies for 2014. Accordingly, the fees and levies for St Brigid’s School, Nerang for 2014 will be as set out below. The Brisbane Catholic Education Council recommendation of an increase was endorsed at the most recent St Brigid’s School Board meeting. We hope that this increase will not be too burdensome on families. The tuition fee includes an Archdiocesan Education Levy, which provides shared resources to all schools across the Archdiocese. Also included is a levy of $20 per student to provide for the purchase of land for future school development within the Archdiocese. This is vital investment in the future provision of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Music: Count Us In was held last Thursday 31 October 2013 at 11.30pm EST. With great excitement we gathered in the hall, to sing the same song at the same time as over half a million school students across Australia. This year’s ‘song that stopped the nation’ was titled Keep On. The song was penned by four talented high school students who were mentored by singer songwriter Katie Noonan, and recorded by The Voice runner-up Darren Percival, with students providing backing vocals and musical accompaniment. It certainly stopped St Brigid's. For 3 minutes, the hall was alive with the sound of voices raised in unison. We enjoyed the experience so much, we sang it twice!! For information and to hear the song please go to http://www.musiccountusin.org.au/ AWARDS' NIGHT PERFORMANCES Singing Club and instrumental students will be performing at the upcoming awards night. You child will bring information home via their teacher. Mrs Sandstrom MR GUDGEON'S SPORTS REPORT Swimming Lessons We are at the time of year that so many of our young children look forward to. The weather starts to warm-up and we start visiting the beach and swimming pool more regularly. It is so important that children are prepared for all the leisure activities that the Australian summer has to offer. This term we will assist in preparing your children for such activities by providing them professional swimming lessons. Your child will be attending 5 swimming lessons, conducted by trained swimming instructors, at Nerang Swimming Pool, Cotton Street, Nerang – During Weeks 6, 7, & 8 Swimming lessons are a vital part of the Physical Education Curriculum and as such lessons are compulsory. Each year level will be following individualised programs to best suit their age, ability, and prior swimming experience. ¨ Years 1-3 – Focus on swimming methods, technique, and safety. ¨ Years 4-5 – Focus on stroke development/correction, and endurance. ¨ Years 6-7 – Focus on swim survival, stroke effectiveness, and endurance. Information relating to these lessons will be sent home with students in the coming weeks. Please ensure that the permission slip is returned to their classroom teachers promptly. Please make sure that your child is on time and prepared for their lessons. Children will require swimmers (not bikinis), swim cap, goggles, appropriate footwear (thongs to wear to the pool), water bottle, hat, and sunscreen. We encourage and recommend the use of swimming caps as a safety precaution. Children are allowed to wear swimmers under their uniforms to school but must also have underwear to change into after the lesson. Please click here to access the swimming timetable. We have been using these words in our story writing and we would like you to encourage your child to use these in their writing at home. Perhaps you could ask your child to find some wonder words in their current reader or library book. As well as our Wonder Words we are starting to look at letter blends. This week we are introducing “sh”. We have had an exciting semester in Maths, learning our ‘teen’ numbers, 3D shapes and graphing data results. In Religion we have been reading the Bible story, the Good Samaritan. From this story, the children have been discussing how they can care for each other by lending a helping hand. This Friday we have orientation for the 2014 Prep children. The current Prep children will be visiting a Year One class for the morning. Year 1 News Grade One had a great day last Friday working with the hands on activities provided by the "Fun With Maths" company. They enjoyed the company and help from some buddies in Year Four. This was provided out of the Learning Experiences budget. We are looking forward to swimming in the next few weeks. We loved the Wipe out Waste experience where we learned as well as recycle, we can learn to reuse. We had a band with instruments made out of reused materials. Year 2 News Congratulations to 2B on their assembly about water. We encourage everyone to live by their message to use water wisely. Next week 2C will present a Remembrance Day assembly. Last Thursday we participated in the Australia wide 'Count Us In" music event. Everyone sang beautifully! Well done to all of the students who presented their Old Testament retells and we look forward to now hearing about stories from the New Testament. Have a great week. Year 3 News This week we had a visit from Lucy from the GCCC Wipe Out Waste initiative. It was very informative and we got to look at Lucy's worm-filled compost! Lucy encouraged us all to compost suitable food scraps, rather than throwing them in the bin where it can't be recycled. Last Thursday the whole school came together for "Count us in' where thousands of children participated in the simultaneous singing 'Keep On.' It's a great song and was lots of fun! Thank you to the parents who came along to the information night regarding year four going 1:1 with ICLTs in the classroom. If you didn't attend, please make sure you read and sign off on the information sent home with your child last Thursday. Information regarding this meeting will be displayed on the Parent Portal under notes & forms - 1:1 tablet meeting summary. If you have any questions regarding this implementation, please see Mr Bianchi, Mr Clurey, Ms Dempster or Miss Bray. The week 5 homework information is on the Parent Portal and in your child's homework folder. Swimming begins in week 6 (next week) for three weeks. Please return all permission notes ASAP. The timetable is as follows: 3A: Tuesday & Wednesday 3B: Monday & Wednesday 3C: Tuesday & Wednesday Please be aware that days could possibly (but hopefully not) change in following weeks, so please keep checking the Parent Portal and newsletters. Year 4 News Year 4 have had a fun and exciting week. We had a visit from Wipe Out Waste where we learnt lots about recycling by using a worm farm. We learnt lots about worms and even got to see some up close and try and find some baby worms. We also had a visit from Fun with Maths. We got to try out lots of interesting puzzles and games. We also helped the grade ones when they went too. Lots of the year fours have decided 'It's very hard being a teacher'! Year 6 News This week in 6A we have been learning in Maths about cubic centimetres, capacity and mass. We also had the Wipe out Waste program come and visit us and we had to test what would save an egg from cracking when we dropped it from stomach height by using the least environmentally harmful products. The winners were Caitlain, Cody W and Kaylah. We have also been making floor plans for a sustainable house to live in. During library we have been reading a book called Bridge to Terabithia and we are up to chapter 8. In Science we have been making water wheels. We tested them by pouring water on them. Some groups water wheels worked but others didn’t. We are looking at water wheels as a way of generating electricity. By Andrew and Cody.W. JAPANESE NEWS As Wipe out Waste commenced on Monday, I introduced the 3Rs and reclaiming land from rubbish in the Tokyo Bay. We have a very complicated rubbishing rule in order to recycle effectively, especially in Tokyo 6A had their first Skype call with Musashino Gakuen Primary School in Tokyo on Monday. The teacher in Japan and I paired up Year 6 students and Japanese students and they wrote a letter to each other. They exchanged greetings in Japanese and English on Skype and met their partners.
