NSW POLICE BAND …on the beat since 1895! ‐ March 2010 ‐ Welcome one and all to our March 2010 newsletter. I am pleased to convey to our “Friends” that the members of the NSW Police Band acquitted themselves magnificently at the recent Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Australia. Our performances over the four nights were of a very high standard and we have received much positive feedback, both from members of the NSW Police Force and from the general public that attended the shows. I would like to personally thank the band for their efforts and I look forward to the year ahead. Happy reading. Articles by Special Constable Peta Goh Ken Dean joined the Police Band in 1991 on flute & saxophone after a varied career including being an original member of the Daly-Wilson Big Band in the 70s. Ken tells us more… “I took up saxophone at the age of 12 because I liked the sound. I would hear it played on the radio and, not knowing what instrument it was, would pester my parents to get me “one of those” which they did eventually thinking it would be something I would soon lose interest in. Well obviously not as I have managed to make a career out of playing saxophone for most of my life. “A most rewarding experience for me in the Police Band was to travel to perform in Tokyo in the midnineties. Our band had been invited to represent Australia there for a world convention of police bands and we had a great time. The Japanese people were wonderful hosts and our performances consisted of a variety of musical styles and we were very well received. “I have been in the Police Band for 19 years now and although I’m not the longest serving member I have the dubious distinction of being the oldest member. Don’t quite need a cane to assist on the march yet!” Musical Moments in March
