Metals and Nonmetals

Metals
and
Nonmetals
Metals
•Metals - the elements that
are on the left side of the
zigzag line on the periodic
table
•Most of the elements are
metals (about 75%)
• Examples of Metals:
Aluminum
Copper
Sodium
Calcium
Properties of Metals:
• Luster - Has a shiny surface
• Conductors - Heat and electricity
move through them easily
• Malleable - Can be bent or
hammered into different shapes
• Ductile - Can be pulled into a wire
• High Density - Heavy for their
size
Nonmetals
•Nonmetals - the elements
that are on the right side
of the zigzag line on the
periodic table.
• Examples of Nonmetals:
Chlorine
Sulfur
Iodine
Neon
Properties of Nonmetals:
•Dull - Not shiny
•Nonconductors - Heat
and electricity do NOT
move through them easily
•Brittle - Break or shatter
easily
●Metalloids - Metalloids are found along this
zigzag line.
Elements identified as metalloids have properties
(characteristics) of both metals and
nonmetals.
