John LaPointe Pearl River Community College NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION US POSTAGE PAID Pleasant Grove, UT Permit No. 58 Three Critical Themes: Leadership, Citizenship, & Advocacy For years, ASACC has trained its attendees on the critical components of success for student leaders at community colleges. ASACC focuses on three main themes: leadership, citizenship and advocacy. Good student leaders, who create good student governments on their campus, must learn the basics of all three of these concepts in order to be successful as student government leaders and later as community, state and even national leaders. This conference will offer training and discussion centered on these themes. Leadership is a broad topic with many different theories and ideas. Why are there so many leaders who consistently refuse to lead? Students will be exposed to leadership theory with discussion around the practical application of these theories in a student leadership and student government setting. What is citizenship? What does it mean to be a good citizen? What are the best ways to get involved in your community? Explore these questions with your colleagues from around the country. Professionals with decades of experience will lead workshops and forums centered on civic engagement for students now, and in the future. Advocacy is often seen as “lobbying”, and while lobbying is a component of advocacy there is much, much more to know about serving the students who elected you as a their advocate. Advocating for your constituents on your campus, in your local community, with legislators and other state officials, and with Congress on a national level are all critical to your success as a student leader. Register for this conference, develop your skills, make a long term difference! LEARN HOW TO LEAD, LEARN THE ART OF BEING A GOOD CITIZEN, LEARN HOW TO GET YOUR VOICE HEARD! Conference Registration Fees Reduced The American Student Association of Community Colleges has reduced the rates for student leaders to attend the 2013 Leadership, Citizenship and Advocacy Conference in New Orleans. Because of the weak economy and budgets cuts we are working to make the conference more affordable for student leaders. The rates are $300 per student with discounts available for more students! The more students you bring, the more you can save. We have also negotiated a great hotel rate just blocks from Bourbon Street for only $139 per night! Exciting Speakers for an Exciting Town! Mike Marino Jr. is a native of the New Orleans area and knows the history of New Orleans inside and out. He will speak to the conference participants about their potential to make a huge difference in the lives of others by first focusing on developing themselves. His motto is, “Knowledge is the root of all good! Fall in love with learning.” He will also entertain the audience by weaving historical facts about New Orleans throughout his presentation. Bruce McDonald is a professional hypnotist and renowned professional speaker. His background provides for exciting discussions about the human mind and his presentation on memory and study skills is always a hit with student leaders. He will present at the conference and we may even talk him into a live show for the group on Friday evening!
