HENRY GOLF OPEN
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
I would like to update you on a few
things. First the 21st Annual Henry Golf
Open was held on August 12 at the Monticello Country Club. There were 84
golfers of which two were women for the
first time. We hope in the future more
women will participate. There were
some new golfers and classes represented. This year we had new golfers from
the classes of 1965, 1968, and 1972. The
weather was great, golf was golf, and the
socializing was outstanding. What
makes this event even more rewarding is
the money that is raised for the Foundation. This year the event raised $3,686
for the Foundation. Thank you to all
who participated.
As in all organizations there is always a need for
help to make things more efficient. Over the last
few years the Foundation has tried to become
more current with communications and the social
media. Now that we have our feet wet we would
like to become even more proficient with our
technology. We have two areas that need
additional support.
Webmaster - The Foundation is looking for
someone to be our official ―webmaster‖ for
the Foundations website. We are not looking
to create a new website but need someone to
maintain, update, and improve the current
website.
MailChimp email guru - The Foundation uses
MailChimp to send out emails. We would like
to get someone that is familiar with MailChimp and can coordinate its use for things
like the newsletter.
If either of these functions is something that
interests you please get in touch with Jim Sawyer
at [email protected] .
W h e r e i s h e n o w … ? Former student, teacher, coach
Benson, MN's loss was Minneapolis Patrick Henry's gain. Craig
Canham moved to Minneapolis
during his early middle school
years to attend Henry. While a
student, he was very active in
football, basketball and track. He
also found time to be a Hi Y
member, NHS and the treasurer
of class of 1960.
After graduation, Craig went on
to Macalester to earn a degree in
education which prepared him
for a career as a science, biology
and physics teacher in Minneap-
olis. While at Mac, he was a
three year varsity basketball
player.
Immediately following graduation from Macalester, Craig
found himself back at Henry
teaching all three areas of his
expertise and coaching football,
basketball, cross-country and
track. At Henry, Craig coached
two cross-country teams to state
and numerous individuals to the
state track meet. He remained
in these positions from 1964-82
as a beloved coach and teacher.
During his Henry tenure, he also
married the love of his life Karen, who is also a career teacher
and started his family which
consists of daughter Heidi who
teaches in Robbinsdale and
son Terry (TJ) who coaches at
Osseo. The educational gene
definitely runs in this family.
1982 prompted a major move to
South high school, where Craig
continued to teach biology and
became a force to behold with
his track and cross-country
teams. At South, he coached four

Principal’s Perspective
Greetings, Patriot Alumnae!
We are celebrating the beginning of another prosperous school year!
As the principal of Patrick Henry, my vision has always been to make Patrick Henry one of the highest performing high schools in the state by
continually raising student achievement and maximizing the greatness within every child that enters our school. After three years in this role,
I have not wavered in realizing this dream. But the dream is only the first step of many. And with all hands on deck, we will continue to take
the subsequent steps to actualize this dream.
During professional development last May, we examined some of our practices, data, and student work for the purpose of determining how we
can refine or create systems that will raise student achievement at Patrick Henry. Later that month, multiple stakeholders representing licensed and non-licensed staff, worked together to further synthesize more data to determine areas of growth for our school. Provided staff
input and this additional work, we were able to identify three Areas of Focus for the 2013-14 school year that will improve overall student
achievement at Patrick Henry. They are:
1.
2.
3.
Student Engagement and Academic Success;
African American Males; and
Vertical Articulation of Curriculum
Throughout the summer months, many staff members researched strategies to support our Areas of Focus and they’ve planned some great
things! We’re convinced that this work, coupled with effective systems and our best efforts, will deliver significant student achievement results
for Patrick Henry over time.
Dr. Chai Lee recently departed Patrick Henry and Minneapolis Public School District for a different opportunity. Therefore, the search for our
next assistant principal has begun. However, I’m thrilled to introduce to you Ms. Crystal Ballard, an Aspiring Transformational Principal that
will complete her principal residency here at Patrick Henry this school year. Ms. Ballard joins us from Olson Middle School and I’m very excited to work with her.
Patriot Alumnae, we are determined to realize the dream of making Patrick Henry one of the top high schools in our state. We are determined
to continue the Patriot legacy of pride and excellence in North Minneapolis. In closing, J.A. Barker says, “Vision without action is merely a
dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” We’re ready to change the world!
Educationally yours,
Latanya Daniels, Principal

state championship teams in cross-country. This was a back to
back to back to back team championship which doesn't
happen very often. This also included an individual state CC
champ. His track athletes brought home a variety of individual
and relay championships. Much of his South High coaching was
done in partnership with another Henry graduate Warren Kaari,
class of '60. Craig retired from teaching and coaching in 1998.
But he has not given up his passion for sports. He continues to
work as an official on the high school, college and junior
Olympics level in cross-country and track. He is also found working at state basketball and football tournaments.
Since retirement, Craig has also become a grandfather to James,
Avery, Maverick and Max. When not playing with grandchildren, officiating or spectating at a variety of sports, he can be
found fishing, golfing, bowling, snowmobiling or ATVing.
Although Craig is hooked on fishing and loves fishing
7-10 hours a day, he always has time for a game of cards.
Craig is a member of the Patrick Henry Hall of Fame, the South
High Wall of Honor and the University of St. Thomas Giant Step
Award. Above all else, his fellow coaches, teachers, college
friends recall him as one of the truly "nice guys" in the world who
showed kindness and dedication to all of his students and
athletes.

Hall of Fame Criteria
The Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) Hall of Fame (HOF) committee is always looking for deserving candidates. Members of the HOF can be former students, staff and /or community members. The
nominee must have such character that brings honor and recognition to the PHHS community and
Hall of Fame. Students must have graduated from PHHS and have been out of school for at least five
years or more. Staff members and other candidates do not have to be graduates and can be nominated at any time. The Hall of Fame is not an athlete only recognition as the selection committee is
looking for individuals who bring honor to the school by their accomplishments in many areas of society.
Selection criteria is made up of two parts: significant accomplishments while at PHHS and significant accomplishments after high school including volunteer participation, honors and awards, community involvement, church activities, involvement with youth, membership in civic organizations,
any offices held, etc. Nominations by application can be submitted anytime. Selection of inductees is
made after January 1 each year. Inductees are honored at the Foundation spring luncheon in May.
Nomination forms can be obtained from Cathy (Roehl) Peterson at 763-425-3362 or [email protected].
In 2001, the Patrick Henry Foundation started the Hall of Fame and currently there are 92 members.
Plaques honoring the members are located in the PHHS Gymnasium Lobby

2013 Fall Luncheon
PHHS Jazz Combo to perform at Fall Luncheon
Patrick Henry has a proud tradition of excellent music groups, as alumni are well aware. Jazz has
been an integral part of this tradition for many years, exciting and invigorating both audience and
performers. This year the tradition takes a new direction as the PHHS Jazz Combo will begin rehearsals once a week before school. Students meet at 7:00 AM and study many styles of the jazz genre ranging from Swing and Big Band to Cool and Bebop. As in the past the Jazz Combo is open to
any instrument, keeping the door open for all instrumentalists to experience the fun and challenge
of improvising and performance in a smaller tighter group format. The Jazz Combo will be available
to perform as a large group or in smaller units for community school events throughout the year. In
the words of Duke Ellington's jazz standard (lyrics by Irving Mills) "It don't mean a thing if it ain't
got that swing." Look for the PHHS Jazz combo to be swinging at a venue soon.
