40th Awards Evening Celebrating the success and achievements of our students Thursday 15 September 2016 at 7.00pm Kings Fitness and Leisure Sports Hall Executive Headteacher: Mr Chris Richardson An Outstanding Church of England Academy Station Road, Cheddar, Somerset BS27 3AQ Telephone: 01934 742608 Fax: 01934 742757 Email: [email protected] www.kowessex.co.uk Wessex Learning Trust. Registered in England. Company Number 7348580. September 2016 Dear Guests, I am delighted to welcome you to the 40th Annual Awards Evening here at The Kings of Wessex Academy. Our Awards Evening is always a special highlight at Kings when we celebrate students’ achievements in their academic subjects and wider accomplishments for the last academic year 2015-2016. We are proud of our continued record of success and I am pleased to report that this year is no exception. Indeed, this summer’s GCSE results are a school record for Kings: our best ever! 82% of students were awarded five or more grades A* - C and 76% achieved five or more Grades A* - C including English and Maths. The overall pass rate was once again 99%, and a quarter were the top Grades A*/A. It is wonderful to report that Kings is now in the Top 100 Schools in the country for its performance at GCSE. Similarly, our results at A level were outstanding and amongst some of the best in the country and the overall pass rate was 99% with more than 50% of our students awarded Grades A*, A and B. I congratulate all our students – many of whom are here this evening - for their individual successes, which is the culmination of their hard work in order to achieve their personal best. At this celebratory time, I would also like to thank our dedicated team of staff here at Kings who work conscientiously and consistently hard to provide the best possible education for our students - both in the classroom and beyond with a wealth of enrichment activities that really enhance and bring to life students’ learning experiences. I am proud to work with colleagues who are committed to maintaining our consistently high standards, all of which makes Kings such a special place to be. Success in education is very much based on an effective partnership and I also thank all our parents and friends for their very real support and encouragement throughout the year. Academic success is essential for our young people to stand out from the crowd in this globally competitive world. Most importantly, I would like to thank all our young people for their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work, and for helping to make Kings such an outstanding Academy. As you can see this evening, a high number of students are being rewarded, but I would like to praise all our young people for their contribution and participation in academy life in striving to achieve their personal best. It only remains to wish our students well in this new academic year to be the best that you can be! For those students who leave us to embark on Higher Education courses, or employment in the world of work, or other gap year adventures, I very much hope that they will keep happy memories of their time at Kings, and keep in contact with us. Thank you all, once again, for being part of this year’s Awards Evening. Yours sincerely, CHRIS RICHARDSON Executive Headteacher An Outstanding Church of England Academy Station Road, Cheddar, Somerset BS27 3AQ Telephone: 01934 742608 Fax: 01934 742757 Email: [email protected] www.kowessex.co.uk Wessex Learning Trust. That’s to say, our students and staff. It also includes our many volunteers who give their time and expertise to enhance the experiences of our young people. For our first Community Award, this year we wanted to recognise four long-serving Mendip Rotarians who have worked side by side with our students over many years to provide exciting enrichment opportunities – including competitions in writing, public speaking, art, music and business/young enterprise and more. Indeed, their combined years of service to Kings is a dedicated 91 years! Unfortunately for us, three of the four are otherwise engaged this evening; but we are delighted that Derek Evans – who has been an active member of Rotary for an astonishing 43 years and has supported countless young people at Kings for 38 years - is with us to collect the award. So let’s show our appreciation for Derek and his absent, but remembered colleagues, David Pottow, Patrick Simpson and Mark Summers. Matt Hawker - Police Community Support Officer Matt is another of our Kings’ stalwarts. He is now in his ninth year as a PCSO for the Cheddar area and works closely with us in our Restorative Justice programme. So, if and when students make the wrong decision and make a big life mistake, they meet with Matt and myself (BM) and we explain the potential seriousness of their misdeed within the context of the Law. Experience shows us this is very effective in the healing and learning process for those students who sometimes get it wrong, but who have the chance to make it right within the safe confines of school. Matt says the best bit about his job is that every day is different and he can never predict what the day will bring. Rather like working in a school! We also thank Matt for his loyalty and time to our young people at Kings. 2015 - 16 was an all action year for sport at The Kings of Wessex Academy. The Academy entered teams in all the major team sports in both friendly and cup competitions. The boys’ U16 rugby team started the year off in fine style, when they reached the final of The Somerset Schools Cup for the 3rd year in succession. Unfortunately they were runner’s up this time, losing 12-5 to Huish Episcopi. It was another successful year for the girls’ rugby who won the South West Girls 10 aside competition for the second year in a row and qualified for the national finals. They went on to come second in the group stages, and lost the 3rd and 4th play off 2 tries to 1, finishing as the 4th strongest team in the country. A fantastic experience for the girls and an outstanding achievement for the Academy. Success also came from the year 10 Girls who won the area netball and hockey tournament. The year 9 girls won the netball and hockey and the year 11’s won the hockey. The summer term was as always a busy time with many year 9 and 10 students competing for the Academy in the County Athletics competitions. A number of year 9’s were selected to represent the Mendip Athletics Team after successful performances at the Mendip Athletics at Millfield School. The department also participated in friendly competitions in rounder’s and cricket. The year 10 girls’ won the area rounder’s competition and qualified for the finals at Millfield. Inter House sport saw some exciting competition throughout the year, with a large number of students competing in a wide range of sports. As usual the Academy Sports Day was closely contended, with record numbers of students taking part in both days. A number of academy records were beaten out on the track. The Physical Education Department would like to thank all students who have taken part last year and all staff who have contributed to the extracurricular program. As always we look forward to another successful year in 2016-17.
