Key Messages
Age and Sex
A more markedly aging population…. the population pyramid
for the district shows how, proportionately, its population is
over-represented in the older age groups; 1 in 4 residents in
the district are over the age of 65. However, pockets of
Stratford on Avon experience higher numbers of pre-school
children, particularly in areas of new house building. As with
elsewhere in the county, women account for a higher
proportion of those aged 65+
Disability and Health
Levels of 'good' health and disability are in line with county
average.....In Stratford on Avon, 83% of residents described
their health as 'good' or 'very good' - in line with county and
national trends.
Similarly, levels of disability, as measured through the census,
are very slightly lower than those experienced countywide
and nationally but essentially in line with the average for
Warwickshire.
Ethnicity, Country of birth, language and religion
Currently less diverse than elsewhere in the county….in Stratford on Avon
the 'White British' ethnic group accounted for 93.6% of the population in
2011. The district's next largest ethnic groups is 'Other White' at 2.9% of
residents followed by 'White Irish' who make up 0.7% of the populaiton and
the 'Indian' community at 0.5% . Together they account for almost 5000
residents.
In Stratford on Avon, 6.2% of the population are recorded as being born
outside of the UK - an increase on the figure of 4.6% in 2001. This rate is
below county and national levels. The most prevelent non-UK country of
birth in the district is Poland followed by Ireland.
After English, the second main language spoken by residents is Polish.
Almost 300 residents record Chinese as their main language. Accross the
district, 459 residents are recorded as not being able to speak English well or
at all.
Around 70% of residents identified themselves as 'Christian'. After this, the
largest religious groups is Buddist at 0.3% followed by Muslim at 0.2% .
Being part of an ethnic or religious group in an area where there is little
diversity may prestent its own challenges in terms of inclusion, access to
services and participation in community life generally.
