KINDERGARTEN – GRADE ONE

KINDERGARTEN – GRADE ONE
LESSON #3
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Lesson Time Allotted: 30 minutes
Kindergarten: AK-1, AK-5, AK-11, CK-5, DK-3
Grade One: A1-1, A1-5, A1-11, C1-5, D1-3
Skill Theme: Manipulative (Striking)
Equipment Needed:
Rackets, paddles, small bats, beach balls,
small playground or other ‘soft’ balls,
hoops, cones.
Warm-Up/Introduction: (5 minutes)
• As children enter the gymnasium, call out various locomotor skills for
children to perform. For example, running, skipping, hopping, sliding, walking.
• Next, have children practice changing directions. On command, call out
a locomotor skill (skip!), and as children are skipping call out “change
direction!” and the children stop and change the direction in which they were
traveling. Vary the locomotor skills frequently.
Skill Development: (20 minutes)
As a Teacher: Striking is a fundamental skill, which is the foundation for a
variety of specialized sports and game activities such as baseball, softball,
tennis, and cricket. To ensure young children are working toward a desired
level of skill development they need numerous practice opportunities to ensure
success.
Critical Cues:
·
Keep eyes on the ball
·
Feet are spread apart and knees bent slightly
·
Grip is firm during the swing and follow-through

Activity #1:
Paddle Ball
Time Allotted: 10 minutes
• Arrange children so they have their own space. Give each child a paddle/
racket and a ball. Beach balls are easier to make contact with as they are
light and stay in the air for a longer period of time. Pose the following
challenges to them:
-“Can you toss the ball in the air and try and catch it on your paddle?”
-“Can you now toss the ball in the air and try and keep hitting the ball in the
air? How many times can you do this?”
-“See if you can hit the ball in the air by switching sides of the paddle back
and forth.”
As a Teacher: If children are having a difficult time, they can hit the ball
toward the ground, or to a wall.
Activity #2:
Paddle Up
Partner!
Time Allotted: 10 minutes
• Have children partner-up (you can choose partners based on birthdays,
colour of hair etc.). Have partners 6-8 feet from a wall each with a paddle
and one ball. One child will bounce the ball to their partner and the partner
attempts to hit the ball to a target (wall, hoop). Switch after 5 attempts.
As a Teacher: Move around the general space, providing feedback to the
children. Emphasize a specific critical cue here— Keep eyes on the ball.
Increase Difficulty (if needed): Have children replace a beach ball with a
smaller ball.
Closure
Time Allotted: 5 minutes
Discuss the important critical cues of striking an object with an implement.
Demonstrate.
2
Assessment:
While students are striking you can
complete an analytical rubric and
analyze students’ striking patterns.
RATING SCALE:
Excellent = E
Good = G
Needs Improvement = NI
