S37/39 - Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection. 4.FIRST AID MEASURES Eye Contact Immediately flood with copious amounts of water holding the eye open if necessary. Obtain medical attention. Skin Contact Immediately wash with water, preferably under a shower, removing contaminated clothing as washing proceeds. Obtain medical attention if irritation persists or if blistering occurs. Contaminated clothing should be washed before re-use. Inhalation Remove from exposure. Keep warm and at rest. If there is respiratory distress, give oxygen. If respiration stops or shows signs of failing apply artificial respiration. Obtain medical attention urgently. Ingestion Wash out mouth with water; give plenty of water or milk to drink. Obtain medical attention. Do not induce vomiting. Treatment may be needed for pain and shock. 1 Note for Doctors Harmful by ingestion, inhalation, skin and eye contact. Local corrosive effects predominate. No known systemic effects. No specific antidotal treatment, symptomatic support required. No known delayed effects after single exposure apart from consequence of local tissue damage. 2 5.FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES Not combustible. Use media suitable for surrounding fire conditions. Extinguishing Media Will not explode, solid residues formed by evaporation in a fire is partially combustible and water, C02, foam and dry powder may be used. Residues will emit toxic fumes (Nitrogen Oxides) if burnt or thermally decomposed in a fire. Cool containers with water spray if exposed to fire or heat. Wear S.C.B.A. & protective clothing. 6.ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Personnel Precautions Wear full protective equipment. See Exposure Controls/Personal Protection Environmental Precautions If spillage contamination of water courses, drains or vegetation inform relevant authorities. 7. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES CONT... Methods for Cleaning Up Large spillages - prevent product from reaching drains etc... Contain spillage using earth or sand and pump into an emergency tank. Dispose of, if necessary using licensed waste disposal contractors. Wash down area with water. Collect and treat all water used in the clean up. 8.HANDLING AND STORAGE Handling Avoid contact of product liquid or mist with eyes or skin Storage Store in sealed container in a cool dry area. Materials Unsuitable Suitable Aluminium Rubber (certain types) Ceramic Glass Lined mild steel PVC PVC lined GRP High Density Polythene Titanium PTFE and similar fluorinated polymers 3 9.EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION Personal Protective Equipment Wear rubber or plastic gloves and goggles. Occupational Exposure Limits Sodium Hydroxide OES 2mg/cu.m.LONG TERM,TWA. Installation Control 10.PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Appearance Straw liquid Specific Gravity 1.18 Odour Mild Molecular Weight Not applicable pH 13.5 Solubility Completely soluble in water Boiling Point °C approx. 100°C Melting Point °C Not applicable Vapour Pressure at °C Similar to water at ambient temperatures Flash Point Not combustible Flammability Not applicable Auto Flammability Not applicable 11.STABILITY AND REACTIVITY Stability Stable Conditions to Avoid See Handling and Storage Materials to Avoid Strong oxidising agents and strong acids. Avoid contact with aluminium and zinc-may evolve hydrogen. 4 12.TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION Effect of Substance - On Eyes Contact with eyes may result severe burns with permanent damage possible. - On Skin Cause Severe burns, even on short duration contact. - By Skin Absorption No systemic effects by any route of exposure. - By Ingestion Severe irritation and corrosion of the mouth, throat and digestive tract. Large amounts may cause hypo-calcemic tetany, with spontaneous recovery. - When Inhaled (acute effect) Much above the hygiene standards is likely to cause irritation of the nose, throat and respiratory tract. 13.ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION Sodium Hydroxide, due to its high chemical reactivity is likely to chemically degrade to a more environmentally benign neutralised product. Discharge of large quantities can cause long term effect for the aquatic environment. High pH value is toxic to aquatic organisms. 14.DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS Wear full protective clothing. See Exposure Controls/Personal Protection Spillages See Accidental Release Measures Dispose of solutions or materials contaminated with the product using a licensed contractor in accordance with Waste Disposal Regulations.
