The NHS Commissioning Board has, via its
operating models, made it clear that all
healthcare organisations must comply with safety
standard ISB 0160 and ensure their suppliers
comply with ISB 0129. Implementing these
standards for the first time can be complex and
time consuming. Real-world experience in this
area is hard to come by.
BT has been undertaking eHealth clinical risk
management activities for nearly a decade. We
have harnessed the experience gained from
authoring large numbers of safety cases and
wrapped this into an energetic and thoughtprovoking two-day course in practical Clinical
Risk Management.
Training course overview:
On 11-12 September 2013 BT will hold this exclusive pilot course at its headquarters in London. The
course will be split into eight interactive modules over two days, giving attendees the opportunity to
participate in presentations, practical applications and discussions:








Introduction to clinical risk management – the drivers and need of CRM, and what to expect from
your suppliers
Organising and governing the project – the need for the CRM system to be governed properly, the
role of the Clinical Safety Officer, undertaking and evidencing a competency assessment, and
understanding the role and purpose of the CRM file and CRM plan
Developing the hazard register (strategy) – the concepts of hazard, cause, control and impact,
the important factors in structuring a hazard register and how to create and use a risk matrix
Developing the hazard register (content) – the need for a methodology in developing hazard
register content, the importance of the multi-disciplinary team in hazard register development and
awareness and application of the Structured What-If Technique (SWIFT)
Safety case structure – purpose and content of a clinical safety case report, validating controls,
collecting evidence, the differences and relationships between hazard logs, clinical safety cases,
CRM files and clinical safety case reports
Safety case controls and evidence – identifying and undertaking control option analysis, the role
of risk acceptance criteria and understanding when clinical risk benefit analysis may be required
Managing issues and live incidents 1 – understanding the need for continued CRM activities in
live service, what constitutes a CRM incident, how to determine if a service issue is related to
clinical safety and understanding why CRM activities are required to manage on-going change
Managing issues and live incidents 2 – understanding the key considerations to take into account
when determining clinical risk and how to document and manage clinical risk issues

Travel information:
Tube: The closest tube to BT Centre is St Paul’s on the
Central Line. Follow the ‘Newgate Street’ exit and BT
Centre will be opposite you at street level
Rail:
From Waterloo station take the 521 bus which
runs past BT Centre. From City Thameslink station take
the ‘Holborn Viaduct’ exit to street level where you will
see a Starbucks on your left, pass this onto the street
and turn right and walk along Holborn Viaduct to
Newgate Street (approx. 10 mins)
Bus: The number 8, 25, 242 and 521 buses all pass
along Newgate Street
Refreshments: Each day will start with tea/coffee upon
arrival. There will be a tea/coffee break mid-morning and
mid-afternoon with a 45 minute lunch break (lunch will be
provided)
