Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga,
Spain in 1881. He is one of the most
famous artists in the world. When he
was young he amazed friends by
drawing a perfect picture without
lifting his pencil or looking at the
paper. Pablo had many different
periods in his artwork. Two of his
most famous paintings are Guernica
and The Young Ladies of Avignon. He
even created a new way to sculpt and
paint! His work was also an
important step in Modern art.
Picasso painted things the way he
saw and felt about them. The way he
saw things wasn’t always as they
really were.

struggles and I like to share my stories with them.”
Faith Ringgold, artist and author, utilizes the art forms
of painting, mixed media sculpture, performance,
quilts, and writing to tell her story. Born October 8,
1930 in New York City’s Harlem Hospital, Ringgold
grew up on the heels of the Harlem Renaissance and at
the threshold of the Great Depression. Her great
grandmother, a slave, stitched quilts for her master in
Florida. Ringgold’s mother, Willi Posey, was a fashion
designer and dressmaker. Her father, Andrew Louis
Jones, Sr., came from a lineage of preachers versed in
oral tradition. Ringgold combines her inherited
affinity for fiber and her love of storytelling to deliver
the message of her personal history.

Diego Rivera’s legacy to modern
mexican art was decisive in murals and
canvas; he was a revolutionary painter
looking to take art to the big public, to
streets and buildings, managing a
precise, direct, and realist style, full of
social content.

The American artist and filmmaker Andy
Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in 1928.
There has for years been quite a bit of
confusion to where and when Andy Warhol
was born, but according to Andy’s two older
brothers and the birth certificate that was
filed in Pittsburgh in 1945, he was born on
August 6th in Pittsburgh. Whether or not
this is the day he was born hasn’t been
proved, but it was on this date he would
celebrate his birthday. However, there is no
doubt that he died at 6:31 A.M. on Sunday,
February 22nd, 1987, at the New York
Hospital after a gallbladder operation. He is
considered a founder and major figure of the
POP ART movement. A graduate of the
Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949, he
moved to New York City and gained success
as a commercial artist.
