(See next page for details) *REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY March 18th, 2017* SUMMER SCHOOL 2017 INTRODUCTION The purpose of our summer school program is to provide opportunities for learning beyond the traditional school year. Students of all ability levels will find something of interest in our program. Courses are designed to offer enrichment and remedial skill development. All students that live in the Weyauwega-Fremont School District during the summer months are eligible to attend summer school. Classes will take place on the Weyauwega campus. Busing will be provided for all students who live in the Fremont area (transportation is NOT available for Hunter’s Safety, the Drama/Musical Production or for Afternoon High School Credit Recovery Classes). Students are picked up every morning at 7:05 am at the Fremont Elementary School and at 7:10 am from St. Paul’s Day Care. They are returned to St. Paul’s Day Care at 12:50 pm and Fremont Elementary at 12:55 pm. Please pick up your student(s) promptly after dismissal. Free Breakfast will be served to all children from 7:30AM-8:00AM and Free Lunch will be served to all children from 12:00 PM to 12:15 PM. Please call 867-8160 with questions. First session will run from June 12 th – June 30th. These classes run from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, unless otherwise noted on the registration form. Second Session classes will be held July 31st through August 18th, 2017 for all students before the new school year begins. Description: The Hunter Safety Education Course instills in students the knowledge, skill and attitude to be a responsible and safe hunter. Students learn how hunting accidents are caused and how they can be prevented. Hunter responsibility and safety are stressed throughout the classes, which consist of lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, practical exercises, and individual study and activity assignments. Students learn about proper care and cleaning of a firearm, wildlife identification, our hunting heritage, and field care of harvested game. Hunter education graduates receive a certificate that is accepted in every state, Canadian Province and Mexico. You must have a Hunters Safety Card in order to get a hunting license when you turn 12. Fill out the registration information and submit with summer school registration. 3. Complete the FREE Online Course at, homestudy.ihea.com and print off the quiz results as you take them. Expectations: 1. Students are required to complete the online course prior to attending. Also homework must be completed before testing. 2. Students are required to participate in the hands-on portion. 3. Students must take a written exam, a field test and pass both to become certified. 4. Students are required to attend the entire course each day. Two tardies will result in automatic failure. 5. The course is run by volunteer instructors who are giving of their time. As a result any discipline issues are grounds for immediate failure, dismissal from the course, and forfeiture of fee. What to bring: 1. Children who are going into Kindergarten in the Fall will only be allowed to take Exploring Kindergarten. All classes are 1 hour long unless otherwise stated. All students are encouraged to take courses involving reading or math. Parents will be informed if their child has been recommended for a particular course to address a student’s needs in reading or math. Exploring Kindergarten (Enrichment Session June12th -30th, 2017) (5 year old Kindergarten) In this class, 5 year old kindergarteners will be exploring nature and the world around us by doing fun engaging “Science” activities inside and outside the classroom. Getting Ready for Kindergarten (Enhancement Session July 31st-August 18th, 2017) (5 year old Kindergarten) This class is designed to provide a warm and welcoming start to Kindergarten for students entering 5 year old Kindergarten in Fall 2017 in a relaxed summer school setting. Novel Study (3rd-5th grades) Student in grades 3-5 will be able to read and talk about their reading, they will be able to explode their thoughts, questions, and ideas among their group partners. Reader’s Theatre (1st-4th grade) Does your child resist or struggle with reading? Reader's Theater helps students become better readers. Students will have the chance to read smoothly by reading from a script. They will chorally with a group or adapt a theater from children's book. Learn more about history, perform some reader's theatre, create projects and read a fables from around the world. Treasures of Mythology (4th-8th grades) Explore the classic stories of Greek, Olympian, and Egyptian traditions, or beliefs from different historical events. This literature will leave you with an understanding of gods, goddesses, monsters, and mortals. We will explore everything from the creation of of the earth and sky to lengthy battles between gods through reading the enchanting and magical lives of the magical characters. Math Everyday Math (1st-6th grades) Sharpen your math skills in a fun and relaxing setting while learning how math is used on an everyday basis. Games, art activities, and songs will focus on number operations, problem solving, and teamwork. Bring a smile and a sense of humor. Math Strategies (MUST know math facts) (3rd -5th grades) Students will learn new ways for computation of the four important operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Multiple strategies will be shown for each operation. Students will find new pathways within an operation to get an answer. Students will work with numbers differently and understand what the digits stand for in new ways. A student will choose a strategy based on the numbers that are given, not by what operation needs to be done. Each student will have a notebook full of strategies at the end of this session. Money Smarts (1st-5th grade) Nickels, dimes, and quarters oh my. Learn all about money! Practice making change, saving your allowance, and money management. Play skill building board games and explore money in new ways. Science Biomedical Engineering (Designing a Knee Brace) (3rd-9th grades) Students are introduced to the biomedical engineering and how engineers use their knowledge of human body to design technologies to solve problems related to biology, health, and medicine. Students will follow a story about Erik, a young boy living in Germany, as he designs a temporary knee brace for a classmate who injures his knee on a hiking trip. Students will enjoy learning to think like an engineer through the engineering process. Each student will apply the process to design a knee brace for a problem presented in an activity. Relevant musculoskeletal vocabulary will be provided throughout the story and students will “learn by doing”. Building Engineering (1st-4th grade) Constructing useable structures from a list of materials provided. Probable solve and fix the problems if it doesn’t work appropriately. Learn about function and design approach of buildings. Along with learning about different structures due to environment, social structure, and culture. Electricity (3rd-9th grades) Learn about electricity and how it works, along with what it can do. Working on different hands on projects to help understand how it works. Which state is the proud owner of the world’s largest baseball bat? Or which state grows the most popcorn? There are so many interesting facts, history, famous people, and wildlife throughout our 50 states. In this class, we will travel through the United States by completing activities, crafts, projects, songs, food, and more to learn historical events and fascinating facts about the 50 states. Vex Building (2 hours) (4th-6th grade) This class will feature the VEX Robotics Kits and allow students to explore the engineering design process as they work to solve real world problems. This is the perfect class for anyone who is interested in learning more about simple machines, becoming an engineer or for anyone who enjoys building and creating with their hands and minds. Wacky Wisconsin (1st-4th grades) Come discover and explore all the wacky things in Wisconsin. Explore things from the Upside Down White House in Wisconsin to the Largest Talking Cow to the National Mustard Museum. Explore all the weird and wacky things to discover in Wisconsin. Creative Computers (1st-4th grades) Students will be exposed to a variety of computer software programs. Word processing and computer games will also be explored. Games Galore (1st-6th grades) Learn about all different kinds of games including board games, card games, physical games, and so much more. Have fun using math skills and reasoning to play with your friends. Jewelry/Headband Making (1st-4th grades) Learn different techniques to make fun and exciting wearable pieces of jewelry and headbands. Just Craftin’ Around (1st-4th grade) In this class you will explore a variety of crafts. Students may learn Origami, card making, scrapbooking, nature crafts, and so much more! Come enjoy craftin’ around with us! Kids in the Kitchen (1st-4th grades) This course is designed to teach children how to properly create simple recipes and snacks. It will focus on using math/reading skills to correctly read and measure recipes in real life situations. The children will learn how to make many fun recipes! Photography (1st-4th grades) Your child will learn about photography in a project-based class. Learning about the history of photography along with different techniques they can use to help enhance their snap shots. (Students will be responsible for bringing a digital imaging device of some kind if they have one). Baseball/Softball (1st-4th grade) In this class, students will learn and practice hitting, throwing, pitching, and base running. Students will work on these aspects of the game through different games and drills. The skills that the students learn can be applied to any level of player, from tee ball to high school. The class will also take time to talk about different types of in-game strategy including defensive plays, cut offs throws, and bunting situations. (The majority of the equipment will be provided for the students but they do need to bring their own baseball glove and if they have a bat, they are encouraged to bring it to class.) Biking/Hiking (Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced) 2 hour class (1st-4th grade) Learning about bike safety along with gain strength and confidence in biking. While biking around the City of Weyauwega. Hiking will be walking and exploring around the river along with the City of Weyauwega. (Kids will be responsible for bring their own bikes and helmets). (Please note we will be grouping by ability and skill level. Maybe going off the grounds.) Learn correct fit of your helmet, practice braking, pedaling, and paying attention to what is happening in around you. Learning about bike maintenance, setup, and flat tire changes. Learning about how to properly fit your helmet and bike. Learn how to ride safely in traffic. Dance (1st-4th grades) In dance you will learn a variety of different dance moves while being able to put them together in a group setting. Come enjoy craftin’ around with us! Kids in the Kitchen (5th-9th grades) This course is designed to teach children how to properly create simple recipes and snacks. It will focus on using math/reading skills to correctly read and measure recipes in real life situations. The children will learn how to make many fun recipes! Photography (5th-9th grades) Your child will learn about photography in a project-based class. Learning about the history of photography along with different techniques they can use to help enhance their snap shots. (Students will be responsible for bringing a digital imaging device of some kind if they have one). Baseball/Softball (5th-9th grade) In this class, students will learn and practice hitting, throwing, pitching, and base running. Students will work on these aspects of the game through different games and drills. The skills that the students learn can be applied to any level of player, from tee ball to high school. The class will also take time to talk about different types of in-game strategy including defensive plays, cut offs throws, and bunting situations. Learn new things about baseball and have fun playing this great game! (The majority of the equipment will be provided for the students but they do need to bring their own baseball glove and if they have a bat, they are encouraged to bring it to class.) Biking/Hiking (Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced) 2 hour class (5th-9th grade) Learning about bike safety along with gain strength and confidence in biking. While biking around the City of Weyauwega. Hiking will be walking and exploring around the river along with the City of Weyauwega. (Kids will be responsible for bring their own bikes and helmets). (Please note we will be grouping by ability and skill level. Maybe going off the grounds.) Learn correct fit of your helmet, practice braking, pedaling, and paying attention to what is happening in around you. Learning about bike maintenance, setup, and flat tire changes. Learning about how to properly fit your helmet and bike. Learn how to ride safely in traffic. Dance (5th-9th grades) In dance you will learn a variety of different dance moves while being able to put them together in a group setting. Fitness for Fun (5th-9th grade) Come to the gym and have some fun playing a wide variety of games and activities. Along with learning about some sports you can play for a Lifetime! Stay Fit-Have Fun and Stay Active!! Lifetime Sports (5th-9th grades) Students will experience fun ways to stay fit and have fun at the same time. Orienteering, Frisbee Golf, Flag Football, Jogging, Basketball, Softball, Bocce Ball, etc. will be explored. Let’s Make a Game (1st -6th grade) Students will read various books and create board games to play along with the story. Read, create, and practice counting and money skills while playing and sharing their board game. What adventure will you go on? Search/Discover/Explore (1st-6th grades) Inquisitive students wanted! Join us for a class of wonders where each day we will explore something new. Topics will range from crafts, playacting, outdoor adventures, history, math games, and more! Each day will present a new learning surprise. Summer Weight Training (5th-9th grades) Students will learn proper weight lifting techniques so they can safely build and define their muscle structure. Students will also be doing a speed-training program, and developing a personal fitness plan. Classes take place in the high school weight room. Volleyball (5th-9th grades) This class is designed to have fun learning and practicing skills of passing, hitting, and setting. Students will build a foundation and learn the proper techniques in volleyball, while playing games and different drills. Yoga (5th-9th grades) This class will go through basic yoga poses and breathing. Teaching your child balance, focus, relaxation, and strength. Shrek the Musical, Jr. (4th-9th grade) Practice will begin June 12th 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm Performances will be the first weekend in August Everyone’s favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning smash hit film. It’s a “big bright beautiful world” for everyone’s favorite ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film. There are plenty of back-stage opportunities including: building & painting scenery, stage manager, student director, props/costume manager, stage crew and more! Directed by Sara Karpinski Mrs. Karpinski has a Bachelors of Music in Music education with an emphasis in choral music. She served as rehearsal accompanist, voice coach, and assistant director for musical productions while working in the Wild Rose School District. Mrs. Karpinski is currently the Spanish teacher here at WFSD. Although she has been teaching Spanish for the past ten years, she continues to remain active in music through church and community organizations. Enhancement Summer School 2017 July 31st- August 18th, 2017 Monday-Friday 8:00am-12:00 noon The Enhancement Summer School 2017 session is for elementary level students of all abilities. The classes offered during the second session (Enhancement) have been greatly expanded to accommodate interest among a broader range of students. Students will sign up for courses of their own interest, and may have the opportunity to revisit concepts not mastered during the regular school year. Students may sign up for enhancement classes, be invited on teacher request, or be required to determine readiness for grade level advancement. The bus will pick up students in Fremont every morning at 7:05 am at Fremont Elementary School and at 7:10 am at St. Paul’s Day Care.
