Words can go forward/backward and up/down. Sherman T. Germ and Vinnie Virus in The Back to School Adventure Vinnie Virus paced back and forth wringing his hands. “Vinnie!” yelled Sherman T. Germ. “Stop doing that! What’s the matter with you?” Vinnie was worried as he began to speak. “Sam has taken all of his medicine and the doctor said he can go back to school now. You heard Sam for yourself, Sherman T! He feels better! We can’t stay here in his nose much longer. His immune system is ready to clean us out of house and home! We need someone to infect . . . fast!” Sherman just smiled. “Vinnie, my grimy old friend, you’ve managed to miss the best part of this whole thing,” he said confidently. Vinnie looked puzzled. “The best part is that Sam is headed back to school. You know . . . school? That beautiful place full of sneezing and coughing and little unwashed hands? Why, it’s a germs’ paradise, I tell you! A paradise!” Vinnie Virus closed his eyes and tried to imagine the playground, the classroom desks and the cafeteria, all favorite party places for him and his germy buddies. He could feel himself relax just thinking about it until Sherman snapped him back to reality. “Vinnie! Pay attention!” Sherman T. Germ had a plan. “Here’s how this will go down: We’ll stick around here in Sam’s nose until he gets to the playground. When he touches his nose, we’ll grab hold of his hand and wait for him to high-five somebody. If we can get to the new kid’s nose or mouth before they leave the playground, we’ll be set!” Vinnie wasn’t convinced. “You know,” he began, “I heard the doctor talking to Sam yesterday. He told him about hand hygiene and how important it is to wash his hands. He even told Sam our secret!” Sherman’s face fell. “He told him how germs hide inside kids’ bodies. He told him what kinds of surfaces germs like, and that we make kids sick by getting on dirty hands and then hopping on food or sneaking into noses. It was scary, Sherman. He was ratting us out! And, Sam’s going to tell everybody, I just know it!” Sherman tried not to look alarmed. “Listen Vinnie, as long as kids don’t know to wash their hands with warm soapy water before they eat or when they sneeze, cough or go to the restroom, we’re fine! Most of them just rinse anyway, which doesn’t do anything but get us wet, right?” “Maybe,” replied Vinnie doubtfully. “But Sam’s teacher is in on it, too! The last time we were at Sam’s school, the teacher handed those rotten sanitizing wipes to every single kid in the class! If they start using them on a regular basis to sanitize their hands, we’re doomed!” Vinnie groaned. Sherman T. Germ started to pace back and forth and wring his hands in worry, just like Vinnie. Should they take a chance out on the playground? What if Sam uses one of those dastardly sanitizing wipes? What will happen to them if the students begin to follow their teacher’s instructions to wash or sanitize their hands thoroughly? Vinnie and Sherman will have to hope they can find just one kid on the playground who likes things as dirty as they do. The End proud sponsors © 2013 CFA Properties, Inc.
