Interesting Facts About
Hot Fun in the Summer Time!
THE SUN!
Summer is the best time of the year to play outdoors in the sun! Around Memphis, summers can get really hot so remember to keep cool and avoid overheating by following these tips:
The Sun is a star in the center of
the Solar System, and it makes up
around 99.86% of the Solar System’s mass.
Drink More Fluids
Drink more fluids no matter what you’re
doing! Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to
drink. Bring a reusable water bottle
with you to stay hydrated.
Stick with drinking water instead of
sodas or fruit juice - caffeine and
sugar will dehydrate you.
If it’s really hot, cut back on exercising; if you have to exercise,
drink two to four glasses of fluids
each hour.
Keep Your Body Cool
Dress in lightweight light-colored
clothing and sun-reflective shirts and
wear loose clothing.
Wear hats and sunglasses. Keep a stash of hats
on hand for friends and family!
Take a cool shower or bath, or move to an air-conditioned place to cool off.
Stay in the shade, especially between 11 A.M. and 3 P.M.
NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, even with the windows down.
To feel cooler, eat cooler. Get Mom to stock up on fruit popsicles and cool
refrigerated fruits.
Protect Yourself From the Sun
As well as a hat and sunglasses, wear sunscreen SPF 15 or higher. The most
effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB” on their labels.
Stay Alert
Be aware of heavy sweating, hot and dry skin, rapid pulse, pale or clammy skin,
and cramps in your leg or abdomen muscles. All could be signs of heat disorder.

Fireflies are
magical creatures that
light up our summer
sky. Fireflies actually
use their light to communicate with each
other - usually to find a
mate, but also to warn
each other of predators. Firefly light is the
most efficient light in
the world, using 100%
of energy for light, as
compared to a regular
light bulb that uses 10%
of its energy towards
light. The best place
to spot them is in dark,
grassy areas and near
ponds or water. The
firefly population is
diminishing, so if you
capture one, make sure
you safely release it!
