Metric Conversion and Controlled Experiment Review

The International System of
Measurement
SI Units
Objective: Convert between units of
measurements using the International
System of Units.

Units of Measure
• meter- measures units of distance or
length
• liter-measures units of volume or liquid
• gram-measures units of mass or weight

Make a scale for conversions
•Use prefixes to fill in each
box left to right from
greatest to smallest. Start
with kilo- on the left and end
with milli- on the right.
•Make sure they are in order
and unit is in the center box.

Your scale should look like this…
kilo-
hecto-
deka-
(unit)
deci-
centi-
milli-
•You can also make a triple scale using only symbols.
km

kg
hm
hl
hg
dam

L
g
dm
dl
dg
cm

cg
mm
1. Determine
whether you need
to move left or
right.
ml
2. Count how many
times you need to
move to get there.
mg
3. Move the decimal
the same number
of times in the
same direction.

Volume
• Metric units of volume can be converted to
cubic centimeters (cc), or centimeters
cubed (cm³), very easily.
• Step one…convert to milliliters (mL)
• Step two…milliliters are equal to cubic
centimeters and to centimeters cubed.
• So…mL=cc=cm³

Critical Thinking Time!
• It was unusual for Cinnamon to
wander so far from home. She was
a good dog and usually stayed
very near her home. After looking
for her for almost three hours,
Dylan found her three kilometers
from home. How many meters was
she from home?
