The director of the Escola received the honour in Lisbon, during an emotional ceremony. The award is based on one of the great myths of Portuguese history, during the era of navigation and discovery. It was born of the assumption that prince Henry (Infante d. Henrique) invited a Catalan cartographer to create a nautical school in Sagres, founded by the royal in Algrave around 1417. In this village prince Henry contracted the Catalan master Jaime of Majorca to run a maritime school, and to teach the Portuguese sailors to make true sailing charts. It was understood that the school would be a prerequisite for the realization of navigational travels during the prince Henry period. The idea behind the Escola of Sagres belongs to the Portuguese collective imagination and to the identity symbols of their people. Thus, the Escola of Sagres is primarily a symbol; symbol for prince Henry and all of the activities associated with Portuguese navigation at the time. It is a symbol of progress of navigation techniques acquired empirically by explorers who braved the Atlantic Ocean in the fifteenth century and laid the groundwork for astronomical navigation – as it came to be practiced in subsequent centuries, which, incidentally, is one of most important aspects of the Age of Discovery. The honour recognized the Escola’s hard work in training and education towards the establishment of competitive services and efficient logistics chains that use ports as central points of intermodal exchanges, therewith contributing to navigational progress in modern times. SPC Portugal along with the Escola Infante D. Henrique are collaborators of the Escola, and regularly help promote short sea shipping and intermodal transport. Being awarded the Escola de Sagres award reflected the appreciation of the Portuguese transport sector for the Escola’s courses and training endeavours. The Escola Europea de Short Sea Shipping is a European training center specialised in logistics and intermodal transport. It aims to promote the development of a sustainable model of freight transport in Europe by educating the people who decide on and participate in the configuration of logistics chains. The first courses were held in 2004 and were promoted by the Port de Barcelona with the collaboration of Grimaldi Lines and the Porti di Roma e del Lazio. In 2006 the Escola was formally founded in the shape and form as it is known today by the ports of Barcelona, Rome and Genoa, as well as the shipping lines Grimaldi Lines and Grandi Navi Veloci.
