Did you know that Captain Meriwether Lewis spent six long weeks in the Pittsburgh area in the summer of 1803 overseeing the construction of his flagship keel boat and staging America’s greatest western adventure? On August 31st of that year, he launched this vessel and made his first stop on Brunot’s Island on the Ohio River where a dramatic incident with his newly acquired pneumatic air rifle occurred. The events of that challenging day mark the first entry in the famous journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Join living historian and national bicentennial reenactor, John McNulty on an educational 7 to 9-mile hike that will include music, live readings from the journals, and a fire starting demonstration while learning about future developments in our area to protect and promote this important history. Beginning in Pittsburgh’s historic West End Village, we will climb up the backside of Mt. Washington near the Duquesne Heights Greenway and Emerald View Park for fantastic views of the city and a great vantage point for discussing the past.
