Sheet Metal and Structural Metal Occupations

Current and Future Employment
The manufacturing and industrial technology and sheet metal and structural metal programs train students
for twenty-one different manufacturing occupations. Collectively, these occupations are expected to
decline by 4% within Los Angeles and Orange Counties by 2020. The occupation expecting the largest
growth is metal and plastic molding, coremaking, and casting machine setters, operators, and tenders. This
occupation is expected to grow 7% by 2020, which is an increase of 319 jobs.

metal and structural metal occupations in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Nearly 45% of these listings

Educational Programs
Currently, there are ten community colleges in the region that prepare students for manufacturing and
industrial technology and sheet metal and structural metal occupations. In the last three years, 145 awards
have been conferred. Notably, Long Beach City College has conferred 62 of these awards, accounting for
43% of the regional awards. Table 6 displays the breakdown of award type for the related community
college programs.
