Interpreting Gang Tattoos
General
Understanding how to interpret tattoos found on gang members need not be a difficult process. Learning the difference
between a gang related tattoo, as an identifier versus a non-gang specific body marking is an educational process. Many gang
investigators learn to read / interpret tattoos as an ongoing part of their job. A tattoo is a very important symbol of belonging
to some gangs. It is one of the most dynamic indicators of gang affiliation a gang investigator has immediate access to. Many
gangs use tattoos to indicate membership within a specific gang. It is not uncommon however, to find some groups who do
not use any specific tattoo as an identifier.
Tattoos are part of a process of non-verbal communications utilized by gang members. Without the need to verbally
communicate, a gang member, as well as observant nongang member can identify a fellow gang member as well as a rival.
Often found within books on gangs, both prison and street gang tattoos are provided in either an illustration or an actual gang
tattoo. Newer publications often have a photographed example of the gang tattoo. While many gang tattoos are somewhat
standardized, the variations of tattoos, “artistic license” employed by the individual gang member or simply the effort to
disguise the tattoo, tend to demonstrate the need for education in the understanding of tattoos as an identifier.
Tattoos can be placed into categories describing their format. These categories provide a starting point for the gang
investigator. Each category reduces the tattoo to its most common yet simple element.
Categories Of Tattoos :
1. Alpha
2. Numerical
3. Symbolic / Pictorial
4. Combination
Each category represents specific elements common to tattoos utilized by gang members. Prison and street gang members use
different tattoo styles yet they share the same categories.
Within each category, it must be understood that gang related tattoos can be intricate in design, hidden within a larger tattoo
and stylized by the wearer while still maintaining the gangs identifier. Tattoos should be fully documented, recording specific
information as well as the location / area it is on. Photographs should be mandatory for the documentation of gang affiliated
tattoos.
It is also important to understand in many cases the tattoo is a symbol of membership in the gang and thus is “gang property.”
Removal of a gang tattoo may also be an outward non-verbal method demonstrating termination of gang membership.
There are cases where gang tattoos are being covered in order to maintain the covert existence of the gang. If you are able to
determine a cover-up tattoo exists, water or baby oil spread on the tattoo may reveal its meaning.
Alpha
Alpha tattoos utilize the alphabet to represent the specific name / acronym of the gang. This is a very common trait used by
both prison and street gangs. Acronyms such as AB - Aryan Brotherhood, AW – Aryan Warrior, DWB – Dirty White Boys,
NLR – Nazi Low Rider, ABT – Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, NF – Nuestra Familia,
NR – Nuestra Raza, EME – Mexican Mafia, EMI – Mexikanemi, SNM – Sindicato Nuevo Mexico (New Mexico Syndicate),
TS – Texas Syndicate and BGF – Black Guerrilla Family represent some of the larger prison gangs
Acronyms such as ABC – Acacia Block Crip, ADC – Atlantic Drive Crip, ECC – East Coast Crip, NHC – Neighbor Hood
Crip, SBC – Santana Block Crip, DLB – Denver Lanes Blood, ESP – Elm Street Piru, FTP - Fruit Town Piru, WSP – West
Side Piru BGD – Black Gangster Disciple, GD – Gangster Disciple, VL -Vice Lord, CVL – Conservative Vice Lord, LK –
Latin King, ALKQN – Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation, BGL – Bell Garden Loco, VN – Varrio Norwalk, WF –
White Fence, OLB – Oriental Lazy Boyz, TRG – Tiny Rascal Gang represent only a tiny fraction of the known street gangs.
Alpha style tattoos may appear in Gothic, Old English as well as other styles of lettering.
Body placement may be important in some regions of the country while not as important in other regions. Alpha tattoos may
also appear as phrases common to the gang, i.e., Amor de Rey an expression used by Latin Kings, Crip to the Bone
occasionally used by various Crip gangs.
Alpha tattoos are very common to both prison and street gangs.

Numerical
Numerical tattoos utilize a number to represent its gang name. They are also a commonly used tattoo by gangs. Numerical
tattoos tend to be a geographic indicator as well as a gang name. This category of tattoo uses street numbers, block numbers,
as well as area codes to indicate the geographic area they claim. Numerical tattoos seem to be utilized more by street gangs
than prison gangs although some prison gangs have been known to use numerical tattoos.
Some notable prison gangs in this category would be the California Aryan Brotherhood and the 415’s, a black prison gang
based from the San Francisco bay area. The 415’s uses the area code of the bay area as its identifier. The Aryan Brotherhood
may use the numbers 666 to represent itself as the baddest of the bad. The numbers 666 represent a passage in the book of
Revelations 13:16 – 13:18 Area codes may not be an accurate indicator or gang affiliation in all cases. Since the area code
represents a large geographic base, the gang uses it to claim a general territory or to identify itself as representing that area
code (in the case of larger nationwide gangs). An example of this might be a 206 BGD versus a 312 BGD. 206 is an area
code for Seattle while 312 represent Chicago. In this case the gang is using the area code to claim territory in multiple areas
of the country while still utilizing the gangs identity. An example of a numerical tattoo utilized to represent a gang name is 18
– 18th St., one of California’s larger Southern Hispanic gangs. West Coast Crip style gangs from specific streets in the Los
Angeles area have been known to use but not limited to streets such as 21, 43, 52, 62, 74,83, 87, 92, 107 and 357. West Coast
Blood style gangs have been known to use but not limited to streets such as 59, 62, 77, 83, 84 and 456. Midwestern gangs
such, as BGD’s and GD’s are known to use 274 and 74 respectively to represent themselves. This is an alpha / numerical
code used by Midwestern gangs. In this case the letter A equals the number 1, B=2, C=3 and so on. By substituting the alpha
for the numerical equivalent and vice versa the tattoo can be interpreted. This style of tattoo is also found in graffiti and
writings.
A certain amount of caution must be employed when viewing tattoos and making a judgment on what gang is represented. In
the case of a 74 tattoo, the tattoo can represent a 74 Hoover Crip or a Gangster Disciple (74 = GD). Using tattoos by
themselves is not an effective method for determination of gang affiliation but rather a good indicator. An individual who
identifies with older Harley Davidson motorcycles (as in 74 cubic inchmotor) can also use the number 74.
Midwestern gangs also utilize a numerical designation to represent what alliance they are affiliated with. This can also be
found in tattoo form. These alliances are 5 for People and 6 for Folk. The meaning of the 5 and 6 respectively cross over into
various aspects of actual People and Folk recorded information and will not be presented as part of this article.
Numerical tattoos may represent streets and neighborhoods that have nothing in common with the area they are found in. It is
common for street gangs to migrate from one area to another and retain their original geographic name / tattoo even if the
name is not indigenous to the new location.
California based Hispanics aligned with Northern or Southern influences are a good example of this type of migration.
Southern California Hispanics will use the number 13 to indicate they are a Sureno (13 is the letter M in the alphabet
demonstrating a Mexican Mafia influence).
Northern California Hispanics will use the number 14 to indicate they are a Norteno (14 is the letter N in the alphabet
demonstrating a Nuestra Familia influence). Norteno and Sureno style gangs are found outside of California in various parts
of the country, especially the Pacific Northwest.
When you encounter an Alpha or Numerical tattoo that is not readily explained, you should view it as a potential resource of
intelligence. As a non-verbal indicator of gang affiliation, it is important to understand what it symbolizes. Familiarity with
Alpha and Numerical indicators from the region the gang investigator is in provides faster identification. Likewise,
familiarity with Alpha and Numerical indicators from other areas of the country also merits consideration due to the
migratory and evolutionary tendencies of gangs.
Symbolic / Pictorial
This category is the most difficult to understand. Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos tend to be at an individual “artistic” level
containing the identifier element of the gangs name. Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos are used as an overt method to convey gang
affiliation. Prison gangs often fall into this category. Some of the more well known Symbolic / Pictorial prison gang tattoos
would be the Shamrock of the Aryan Brotherhood. The AB is now rumored to be utilizing a falcon with references to Sinn
Fein. The Mexican Mafia has used a Black Hand also known as the Mano Negro, an eagle with a serpent in its mouth (the
serpents body would be in the shape of the letter M) and a shield design known as Eternal war.
The Nuestra Familia uses a Sombrero with a machete dripping blood through it. The Northern Structure / Nuestra Raza has
used the Huelga bird and a 5 pointed star known as the northern star. The Fresno Bulldogs may use a Bulldog with a spiked
collar. The Black Guerrilla Family has used a dragon coiled around a prison tower.

The Texas syndicate may use various forms shaped as the letters T and S. One tattoo viewed is a Texas Longhorn with its
horns being the letter T, with a dragon coiled around it with the coils being the letter S.
Street gangs in this category tend to be less West Coast style and more Midwestern.
Black Gangster Disciples utilize various symbols with the most common being a pitchfork and a 6 pointed star (referred to as
the Star of David). Other BGD style tattoos include a heart with wings, flames, tail, horns, bent eared playboy bunny.
Depending on the name
Midwestern gangs may use Dragon –Latin Dragons, Cobra – Spanish Cobras.
Vice Lords utilize various symbols with the most common being a 5-pointed star and a champagne glass, top hat and cane
and a pitchfork in the down position.
Black P Stones use a pyramid with a 5-pointed star. Latin Kings use a 5 pointed crown and a pitchfork in the down position.
Latin Kings also may use a bulldog with a spiked collar with a 5-pointed crown on its head.
Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos do not necessarily follow a standard format. They may be a stand-alone tattoo or part of an
intricate tattoo piece with multiple images involved in a theme. This category of gang tattoo may cover large parts of the
body.
When conducting a visual examination of gang affiliated individuals with multiple tattoos or heavily tattooed areas, it is best
to begin the examination in a specific manner. The starting point is less important than the careful examination of the tattoos
themselves. By using a routine method of starting in one area and examining it before moving to the next area, a gang
investigator will be more apt to discover the more covert tattoos. By picking a starting point, the visual examination should
be conducted in a quadrant format. In the examination of a heavily tattooed individual who wears full length arm tattoos
(often referred to as sleeves), divide the arm into quadrants as in fingers to wrist, wrist to elbow, elbow to shoulder etc. A
slow, complete side to side sweep of each quadrant can then be made before moving on to the next quadrant. Each quadrant
should be slowly examined.
In the examination of an individual who has what may be referred to as a full back piece or full back pack, it is necessary to
divide the “piece” into quadrants i.e. shoulder to shoulder, middle back and lower back. Another method might be to divide
the back along the spine further dividing each piece into another quadrant by having an upper and lower quadrant. This
would effectively divide a full back tattoo into four distinct quadrants. Each quadrant should be visually examined before
moving on to the next.
It may be necessary to divide each quadrant again depending on the complexity or artistic license within the tattoo. A rule of
thumb should be employed in that the more artistic and complex the tattoo, the smaller the quadrant should be. It is important
to complete a thorough examination before moving to the next quadrant. As noted elsewhere, relevant tattoos should be
photographed and completely documented.
The gang member may cooperate during this process and tell you the meaning of Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos. Understanding
the meaning of the tattoos will allow the gang investigator to develop more intelligence on the gang itself, provide
background for future interviews, as well providing information demonstrating the evolution of the gang.
Migration of gang members, from one area of the country to another, brings Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos (as well as other
categories) allowing the gang member a more covert identity. Gang tattoo education may provide information for discovery
of migrating gangs, lessening the impact they have.
Combination
This category essentially combines all categories. Many gangs often combine categories of tattoos. It is very common to view
street gangs with combination tattoos. West Coast black street gangs are a prime example. They often use alpha / numerical
(the geographic area in conjunction with the gang acronym) in a tattoo as in 87 KCG – 87th St Kitchen Crip Gang, 21 ICG –
21st St. Insane Crip Gang, 62 ECC – 62nd St. East Coast Crip, 62 HPB 62nd St. Harver Park Brims, 84 SPB – 84th St.
Swans Piru Blood. West Coast Hispanic gangs such as F-13 – Florencia –13, F-14 – Fresno Bulldogs, as well as many other
California Hispanic gang styles routinely use the gang acronym in conjunction with the number 13 /14 to indicate both
geographic style of their gang as well as what gang they tend to align with.
Midwestern gangs may use a symbol of the gang as well as the number of their particular alliance in addition to other
numbers / letters to indicate their affiliation. A prime example would be a BGD using a 6-pointed star with a pitchfork going
through it. The numbers 274 could be a part of the interior of the 6-pointed star or the letters BGD could be inserted.
The points of the Pitchfork might have the numbers 274 or the letter BGD on it. Gangs using Symbolic / Pictorial tattoos
frequently incorporate alpha / numerical tattoos into the main tattoo theme (being the Symbolic / Pictorial).

Combination category tattoos may incorporate all three categories especially if the gang originates from the Midwest. West
Coast gangs tend to tattoo with more of an Alpha / Numerical style, unless they have a very clear symbolic identifier
routinely used (such as White Fence using a tattoo of a fence with the letters WF on it and the number 1 and 3 on either side
of the fence).
Summary
Interpretation of gang tattoos is an integral part of the gang identification process. Tattoo education is a vital part in the
overall gang education process. The examples given in this article are only examples expressed for illustration and not
intended to represent all gangs / gang tattoos.
As an intelligence tool the interpretation and documentation of tattoos can provide a gang investigator with a great deal of
valuable information. In the situation where you are conducting an initial investigation into the gang member’s identity, it can
provide the name of the gang the suspect is affiliated with. The tattoo may also provide the location or turf (which may
provide the actual geographical area the gang is located in), aka’s and gang names to include deceased members.
In the case of a suspected gang from another geographic area of the country, a numerical tattoo while not necessarily a gang
specific tattoo, may indicate an area code where the gang member has ties. It may also be the exact name of the gang.
Under an ideal situation, interpretation of gang tattoos, may yield the gang’s name, geographic region or turf, name of the
gang member (often the aka) even the last name tattooed across the shoulders or on the abdomen as well as information
regarding members who have died. Names of deceased members may provide an investigator with a starting point for an
interview or even to let the investigator know a gang member, they had particular interest in, is now dead.
A useful tool that is a principal by-product of accurate and complete documentation is the practice of continued photographs
of the same gang member. This may clearly demonstrate an ongoing gang identity. If you are able to document a gang
members continued involvement by showing his new tattoos (most often added while the gang member is new to the gang)
and the dates they were added, it demonstrates a clear link to his ongoing gang persona. It also makes it difficult for the gang
member to deny affiliation. It may also be a useful tool from a legal standpoint when attempting to show the gang member is
actually still part of a gang. For this reason, it is important to photograph the tattoo with a camera capable of inserting the
date onto the photo. At the very least, all tattoos should be dated by the individual who took the photo.

Asian street gangs, as well as other street gangs, use marks, scars and tattoos (indicators) to show other members as well as
non-members that they are "down for the gang" and involved in criminal activity. These indicators can be intimidating to the
victims as well as the general public.
These indicators are important to law enforcement. The majority of subjects contacted with these indicators are gang
members, or involved in criminal activity. The most common type of mark found is the cigarette burn. This type of marking
will not identify the subject to a particular gang, however, it can help you to connect the person to an Asian gang.
The list of marks, scars and tattoos are the ones most common to the Orange County area of California. They may have other
meanings elsewhere in the state, as well as other parts of the United States, but they are still very good indicators.
CIGARETTE BURN MARKS:
Without a doubt, these are the most common form of marking found on Asian gang members. These burn marks may be
found in groups of two or more, by themselves or in the form of a design. They are usually found on the back of the hand or
on the forearm.
Burn marks at one time indicated if a gang m ember was active or inactive. They also show bravery or pain, which they have
caused the family.
The cigarette burn mark is made by pressing a lit cigarette against the skin for a period of time. Gang members will burn the
upper forearm in an attempt to hide it from parents and law enforcement.
THREE (3) DOTS:
The cigarette burn marks are often found in the shape of a triangle, formed by three burn marks.
The meaning of the three dots is "my crazy life" and indicates they don't care about anything. In
the Vietnamese language it translates to "toi o can gi ca".
FIVE (5) DOTS:
Five cigarette burn marks are also common. They are found in the design found on dice and stand
for "a group of close friends" (one person protected by the group). In Vietnamese it translates to "tu
hai giai nuynh de".
NINE (9) DOTS:
The original nine "Nip Family" gang members have nine burn marks that stand for the original nine brothers (members). The
burn marks are formed in two lines on the forearm.
QUARTER BURNS:
A quarter burn is commonly found on Filipino gang members. It is done by heating a quarter and then placing the hot quarter
on the skin. The quarter is pressed into the skin and, depending on how long it is left, depends on how well you can see
President Washington's head. The burn marks are usually found on the hands, forearms and legs.
CROSS BURNS:
The cross burn is made by a series or cigarette burn marks. It has been found on "Natoma Boyz" and usually on the back or
the hand. The cross burn marks have been found on other gang members and may stand for religious beliefs.

The cross burn and the quarter burn show more extensive pain and are usually more common for the harder core gang
members. With all burn marks you will hear various stories as to how they happened or the true meaning.
SCRATCH MARKS:
Asian gang members, or associates, will scratch their gang initials, names or gang emblems into their skin.
This is done by a small scraping tool or finger nails. Once the scratches scab and fall off, the initials or
emblem is able to be read.
The scratches are common with female gang members or girlfriends of gang members. Younger male gang
members, or wannabe's will also mark themselves in this fashion.
SLASH MARKS:
Slash marks are also common with female Asian gang members. They are done by cutting or slashing the
skin. They will usually tell you it's for a boyfriend or for the pain they have caused their family.
COINING:
This is a common marks found on Asians. It is a medical practice used in the Asian culture to bring the bad blood to the
surface. It is believed that this will cure the medical problem. It is commonly mistaken as child abuse in the schools and
hospitals.
Other forms of this practice include pinching the skin between the eyes to cure headache, rubbing a coin on the neck, or
pinching the skin of the neck, which is also believed to bring the bad blood to the surface. When found on the neck, it can be
mistaken as sexual activity.
THE FOUR (4) T'S (TTTT):
This tattoo is normally found on hard-core gang members, who have done prison time or youth authority time. It is believed
that this is an Asian prison type gang, however, this has not been confirmed.
The tattoo is usually done in Gothic style script, but, has been observed in other writing styles.
It is usually found on the back of the neck, the back torso, the front torso and on the arms. It
has also been seen on fingers, legs and hands.
The four T's have meaning:
TINH - LOVE
TIEN - MONEY
TU -PRISON
TOI -CRIME
A fifth T is sometimes included (THO), which means REVENGE.
PANTHER TATTOOS:
The Black Panther tattoo is a sign of power and can be intimidating to the general Asian public. It has been a common tattoo
for Asian gang members.
Some of the panthers will have a single red nail on the paw. This shows a willingness to kill, or could indicate they have
already killed. It has been found on the arms, chest and shoulders and with the four T's.
TIGER TATTOOS:
Like the Panther, the tiger is also a sign of power or strength. It has been found on the arm,
chest, back and shoulders. It has not been consistently found on any particular gang.
DRAGON TATTOOS:
This is a very common Asian tattoo, not only with gang members, but also with non-gang
members. Dragons are a sign of power and can indicate martial art skills. The dragon is
also in the Asian culture. The tattoo has been found on Black Dragon gang members, but
not exclusive to them.
EAGLE TATTOOS:
These are common with the Wah-Ching and Viet-Ching. The tattoos can be very colorful,
or simple with only black ink used. The eagle tattoo has been observed with extended
claws, items hanging from the beaks and with extended wings. A red claw has also been
observed and seems to be more common with hard core members.
KING COBRA SNAKE:
The King Cobra snake is found only in Southeast Asia and is a common tattoo for the
"King Cobra Boyz", a Laotian gang from the Fresno (CA) area.

TEAR DROP:
The tear drop indicates jail time and is usually found on the harder core gang members or criminals.
Note: Tear drop tattoos are not used exclusively by Asian gang members. The open and closed tear drops are also used by
White, Hispanic, and Black gang members.
The open tear drop is supposed to indicate that the wearer has killed someone.
The closed tear drop is supposed to indicate that the wearer has lost a family member, a fellow gang member or close friend.
DOT TATTOOS:
The dots are usually in groups of three or five small dot tattoos. The most common locations are the
web of the hands, the wrist and elbows. They have the same meaning as the cigarette burn marks.
NOTE: The use of "dots" as a tattoo is not used exclusively by Asian gangs. Hispanic gangs also use a
three dot tattoo which may have several meanings; one which may be "Mi Vida Loca" or My Crazy
Life. Another may be representative of the "Los Vatos Locos" (The Crazy Dudes or Guys) gang.

• Although the Southern Poverty Law Center recognizes that much black racism in America is,
at least in part, a response to centuries of white racism, it believes racism must be exposed in

• Neo-Nazi groups share a hatred for Jews and a love for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.
While they also hate other minorities, homosexuals and even sometimes Christians, they
perceive "the Jew" as their cardinal enemy, and trace social problems to a Jewish conspiracy
that supposedly controls governments, financial institutions and the media.
• While some neo-Nazi groups emphasize simple hatred, others are more focused on the
revolutionary creation of a fascist political state. Nazism, of course, has roots in Europe, and
links between American and European neo-Nazis are strong and growing stronger. American
neo-Nazi groups, protected by the First Amendment, often publish material and host Internet
sites that are aimed at European audiences -- materials that would be illegal under European
anti-racism laws. Similarly, many European groups put up their Internet sites on American
servers to avoid prosecution under the laws of their native countries.
• The most important neo-Nazi group in the U.S. is the National Alliance. Until his death, it
was led by William Pierce, the infamous author of the futuristic race-war novel The Turner
Diaries, a book believed by some to have served as the blueprint for the 1995 Oklahoma City
bombing.

• Many groups celebrate traditional Southern culture and the Civil War's dramatic conflict
between the Union and the Confederacy. But some groups go further and embrace racist
attitudes towards blacks and, in some cases, white separatism. Such groups are listed in this

• The League of the South, founded in 1994 and counting some 9,000 members by 2001, is at
the center of the racist neo-Confederate movement. Calling once again for Southern
secession, the League's leaders say minorities are destroying the "Anglo-Celtic" (white)
culture of the South. They oppose most non-white immigration and all interracial marriages.
Founder Michael Hill, a former college professor, has called blacks "a deadly and compliant
underclass" and has embraced well-known white supremacists such as North Carolina
attorney Kirk Lyons.

• The Christian Identity religion asserts that whites, not Jews, are the true Israelites favored by
God in the Bible. In most of its forms, Identity theology depicts Jews as biologically
descended from Satan, while non-whites are seen as soulless "mud people" created with the
other Biblical "beasts of the field." Christian Identity has its roots in a 19th-century English
fad called British Israelism, which asserted that European whites were descended from the ten
"lost tribes" of Israel and were thus related to Jews, who were descended from the other two
Hebrew tribes mentioned in the Bible. But British Israelism, which was initially friendly to
Jews, was adopted and transformed in the 20th century into a rabidly anti-Semitic creed by a
number of racist preachers in the United States.
• For decades, identity has been one of the most important ideologies for the white supremacist
movement. In its hardest line form, it asserts that Christ will not return to earth until the globe
is swept clean of Jews and other "Satanic" influences. In recent years, deep doctrinal disputes,
the lack of a central church structure, and a shift among white supremacists towards
agnosticism and racist variations of neo-Paganism have weakened the Identity movement and
reduced the number of its adherents.

For extremists groups, inmates represent a valuable source of potential recruits, people who can carry
on the struggle while in prison and after their release. As a result, fringe groups and movements from
all over the political spectrum attempt to exert an influence with in the prison walls.
Newsletters and other forms of written correspondence keep inmates informed of day-to-day events
and provide a missing connection to the world outside.
One of the first white supremacists systematically to reach out to inmates was Richard Butler, founder
of Aryan Nations, a neo-Nazi and Christian Identity group. Aryan Nations established its "prison
ministry" in the late 1970's, setting an example that many other Identity adherents would follow.
White supremacists in prison frequently claim adherence to various religious sects not just as an
expression of racist beliefs but also as a way to circumvent prison regulations. Asatru, a Nordic
religion widely practiced by non-racists, is becoming widely shared among white racists and is used
as a venue for organizing.
In addition to Identity and Asatru groups, the World Church of the Creator is particularly active in
prisons.

Many extremist groups not only recruit prisoners but also provide support to members or adherent who
are already in prison.
• These prisoners are referred to as Prisoners of War or “P.O.W.’s”.
While right-wing extremists dominate prisoner recruiting, left-wing groups provide more extensive

311 - The eleventh letter of the alphabet is the letter "K"; thus 3 times 11 equals "KKK," or Ku Klux Klan.

14/8 - Indicates a belief both in the ideology of National Socialism and the validity of the "14 words." This symbol can
often be found at the close of a letter.
33/6 - Thirty-three is 3 times 11. Since the eleventh letter of the alphabet is K, three Ks signify KKK or Ku Klux Klan.
The "6" signifies the sixth or current era of the Klan. 33/6 is also used as a greeting by Klan members.
83 - The eighth letter of the alphabet is H and the third letter is C, thus 83 stands for "Heil Christ," a greeting used by
racist organizations that consider themselves also to be Christian.
666 - The mark of the beast. This symbol is also used to symbolize Satan or evil.
100% - Pure white (Aryan). It is also a statement by white supremacists on the need for a pure, white race that is
uncorrupted by interracial relationships.
4/19 - The anniversary date of the confrontation between Federal agents and the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas in
1993 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. This date is sometimes used as a tattoo by anti-government racists.
4/20 - The anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s birthday is also used as a tattoo by racists and neo-Nazis, to affirm their belief
in the ideals of National Socialism.
18 - Adolph Hitler (1=A, 8=H). Neo-Nazis use 18 in tattoos.
23 - The 23rd letter of the alphabet is W. W is used as an abbreviation for the word "white."
AKIA - A Klansman I AM
CI - These letters stand for Christian Identity, which holds that white Europeans—not Jews—are the real Biblical
"Chosen People," that the white race is inherently superior, that Blacks and other nonwhite races are soulless "mud
peoples" on the same level as animals, and that Jews are descendants of Satan.

DOC - Disciples of Christ - refers to a fictional racist skinhead gang in the movie, "American History X." Now, some
racist skinheads actually tattoo themselves with the acronym DOC, paying homage to the gang in the movie.

KIGY - Klansman, I Greet You. KIGY is commonly used as shorthand to indicate membership/affiliation with the Ku
Klux Klan. It is used primarily as a salutation, but often forms the basis for e-mail addresses, Web page addresses, and
more.
Orion - "Our Race Is Our Nation" is a racist slogan that emphasizes that racial ties are paramount to all else. Within the
United States, for example, a white supremacist might use it to suggest that he or she owes allegiance to his or her race,
rather than to the United States itself.
RAHOWA - "Racial Holy War" - signifies the battle that white supremacists believe will pit the white race against
minorities and Jews and lead to Aryan rule over the world.
SWP - Supreme White Power - the ideological basis of white supremacists’ belief system.
WPWW - White Pride World Wide. It is used as a greeting to show pride in the white race around the world.
UAO - United As One is a short greeting used by racists to signify the need to unite for a common cause—the
preservation of the white race.
Unsere Ehre Heisst Treue - The slogan of Hitler's Waffen-SS troops during World War II. Translates: "Our Honor is
Loyalty."
Weiss Macht - “White Power”
ZOG/JOG - Zionist-Occupied Government/Jewish-Occupied Government. These terms refer to the belief that the Jews
occupy and control the government, as well as the media. The letters often appear in a circle with a slash over it.

Insane Clown Posse / Juggalos started as an underground music rap artist group / fan base. It has since spread into hybrid
gang activity. Currently most of the information in this guide refers more towards the ICP / Juggalo way of life than that
of STG activity. As information is received, this guide will be updated to reflect this aspect.
There have been many reports of criminal activity amongst this group. An incoming letter reviewed recently (spring

MS-13 in the U.S. started in Los Angeles in the late 1980’s due to civil war in El Salvador. Initially it was formed by by
El Salvadorians fleeing before and during the war. After the war, hardened veterans of that war came to the U.S. and
bolstered the existing gangs with their knowledge of warfare and guerilla tactics.
The following states have concentrations of cells that are significantly large in strength of numbers: California, Florida,
Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington,
D.C.

From the mid 1960's to the 1980's, approximately 35 million people were incarcerated in Soviet prisons. Approximately
28 to 30 million Russian inmates were tattooed. According to criminologist Arkady G. Bronnikov, who has studied
tattoos of Russian prisoners for 30 years, inmates wore tattoos only after they had committed a crime. The more
convictions a criminal received, and as the terms of incarceration became more severe, the more tattoos a convict would
have.
Tattoos spell out lives of crime and establish the hierarchy of inmates. According to Bronnikov, at the top of the
hierarchy are "pakhans" or organized crime bosses. The pakhans use the second level of the echelon known as the
"authorities," (also known as enforcers, fighters, or soldiers) to carry out their orders. The "men" are the hard laborers
and are the third level in the hierarchy. The lowest category are the "outcasts." These individuals are basically slaves to
the upper levels of the echelon.
The tattoos present a picture of the inmate's criminal history. According to Bronnikov, "Tattoos are like a passport, a
biography, a uniform with medals. They reflect the convict's interests, his outlook on life, his world view." A prisoner
with an incorrect or unauthorized tattoo could be punished or killed by fellow inmates.
Law Enforcement agencies in California and the United States can expect to see more of these tattoos as the Russian
criminal element surfaces. The tattoos may be of assistance in determining the subject's criminal background and
activity.

11. Have good command of the thieves' jargon ("Fehnay").
12. Not gamble without being able to cover losses.
13. Teach the trade to young beginners.
14. Have, if possible, informants from the rank and file of thieves.
15. Not lose your reasoning ability when using alcohol.
16. Have nothing to do with the authorities (particularly with the ITU [Correctional Labor Authority]), not participate in
public activities, nor join any community organizations.
17. Not take weapons from the hands of authorities; not serve in the military.
18. Make good on promises given to other thieves.
