DAILY BULLETIN 6 Editors Pedro Nunes Rodrigo Martins Soares WELCOME TO MADEIRA 2013 16th International Bridge Festival Madeira Funchal, November 4-10, 2013 It’s a near tie! Team Sigdonnemann leads the tournament. Yesterday they won all but one matches: 18.97, 18.83, 4.50, 18.04, 19.37 and 13.45. They only lost on round 6 to Stone Cutters, who are now a very close second, just 0.13 VPs behind. The German- Icelandic team ran out of fuel on the last two sets of the evening. Their scores were 16.38, 15.50, Sigdonnemann playing against Stone Cutters 12.05, 15.50, 6.88 and 5.32. The Austrian-German team Buchlev had a good Saturday, winning nearly all matches – 13.12, 13.45, 18.83, 4.50, 19.24 – which got them third place, just 6.55 VPs from second. There are still 7 teams within 15 VPs of first place, who can easily take the lead. Everybody will be on their toes until the end of the very last round. And later we will all meet at the prize-giving dinner – See you there! David Bird It was Slam Saturday, with a large number of bridge’s big beasts emerging onto the savannah. Let’s peer through our binoculars at a couple of diamond slams. The first match was Stone Cutters against Stanford from England. Board 4 West deals Both Vul ♠J9 ♥2 ♦AKQ52 ♣Q8642 ♠ Q 10 8 7 5 2 ♠K43 N ♥K94 ♥ J 10 8 7 3 W E ♦ 10 7 3 ♦S ♣7 ♣ K J 10 9 3 ♠A6 ♥AQ65 ♦J9864 ♣A5 West G.Ray North East South Eiriksson S.Ray Ingimarsson Pass 1♦ 1♥ 2 ♥ Dble 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♣ Pass 4♥ Pass 5 ♦ Pass 5NT Pass 6♦ Pass Pass Pass West’s double showed that she would have bid 2♥ without the intervention. It did not promise a top honour in hearts. Steve Ray led the ♥3 and declarer needed to find a discard for the loser in spades. He decided against an immediate heart finesse because the club suit offered an alternative solution for his discard problem (if West held the ♣K). Declarer won the first trick with the ♥A, continuing with ace and another club. West decided to ruff but this slip allowed the slam to be made. Georgia Ray switched to a spade, drawing the king and ace. Declarer drew the remaining trumps with the ace and jack. He then ruffed a heart in his hand, returned to dummy with a club ruff and ruffed another heart. This brought down West’s ♥K. There were still two trumps in dummy, so declarer could ruff his last two clubs and discard the spade loser on the established ♥Q. 6 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA At the other table West opened with a weak-two. The ensuing spade lead against North’s 6♦ forced declarer to take the heart finesse. When it failed, he was two down for a swing of 17 IMPs. In the evening session the Stone Cutters faced Terraneo. The Austrians generally had the better of the bidding exchanges, winning the match, but on this deal it was the opponents who did well: Board 15 South Deals N-S Vul ♠7542 ♥Q862 ♦K8 ♣Q87 ♠A86 ♥J973 ♦AQ543 ♣5 ♠KJ3 ♥A W E ♦J762 S ♣ A K 10 4 2 N ♠ Q 10 9 ♥ K 10 5 4 ♦ 10 9 ♣J963 West North East South Schueller F.Terraneo Garre S.Terraneo Pass 1 ♦ Pass 2♣ Pass 2 ♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 2NT Pass 3♦ Pass 3NT Pass 4♣ Pass 4♠ Pass 4NT Pass 5♠ Pass 6♦ Pass Pass Pass Jasch Garre’s 3♦ was forcing, via 2♠. Over 3NT he tried once more with a control-bid of 4♣. When he heard about the ♠A, he used RKCB to discover that West held the ace or king of trumps alongside the trump queen. An excellent sequence! Matthias Schueller won the heart lead with dummy’s ace and finessed the ♦Q. North won with the ♦K and returned another trump. Declarer had two trumps left for heart ruffs. He played successfully for a 4-3 club break, giving him discards for his remaining two major-suit losers. If clubs had not broken favourably, he would have fallen back on the spade finesse. The other table played in 3NT. Well, I will end with a deal that proves the top players are not super-human, even when they stand at the summit of the mountain - Table 1. Forgive me if I do not name the contestants on this deal from the afternoon session: 7 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA Board 9 ♠ J 10 9 7 5 2 ♥97 ♦ 10 ♣ J 10 9 2 North Deals E-W Vul ♠Q ♠AK43 N ♥AK432 ♥ 10 8 5 W E ♦QJ8754 ♦62 S ♣4 ♣7653 ♠86 ♥QJ6 ♦AK93 ♣AKQ8 West North East South Pass Pass 1♦ 1♥ Pass 2♥ 2NT Pass 3♠ Pass Pass Pass North’s 3♠ was known to be weak because he could not bid 1♠ on the first round. East led the ♥8 to the queen, king and declarer’s nine. West needs to cash his other heart now but he switched to the ♦Q. Declarer won in the dummy and ditched his remaining heart. A trump to West’s queen was followed by a diamond ruffed with the ♠5, East discarding a club. After a spade to the king, East switched to the ♥10, covered by the jack and ace. Are you keeping track of the hearts? West has the ♥4-3, East has the ♥5 and dummy the ♥6! Since East has no more diamonds, declarer could play his ♠J now to force out the ♠A. Instead he played three rounds of clubs, East following all the way. This position had been reached: ♠ J 10 ♥♦♣ 10 ♠♥4 ♦J7 ♣- ♠A4 ♥5 W E ♦S ♣N ♠♥6 ♦9 ♣Q 8 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA Declarer led the ♠J to the ♠A and… discarded dummy’s ♥6! East then forced declarer’s last trump with the ♥5 and the contract went one down, as Nature always intended. It was a moment of light relief for those watching on Bridge Base Online. B beats A By Toine van Hoof In this hand from Match 4 the contract was 4♥ at almost all tables: Board 8 ♠A84 ♥AKQ732 ♦4 ♣K43 West Deals None Vul ♠ K J 10 7 6 5 2 ♠Q N ♥J ♥8654 W E ♦K97 ♦AJ53 S ♣Q5 ♣J762 ♠93 ♥ 10 9 ♦ Q 10 8 6 2 ♣ A 10 9 8 West North East South G. Ray Eiriksson S. Ray Ingimarsson 3 ♠ 4 ♥ Pass Pass Pass The lead invariably was ♠Q, overtaken by the king and won by the ace. On BBO declarer returned a spade to the 10. West switched to ♥J. North won and ruffed a spade. Now on double-dummy lines he can still win the contract by playing ♦Q or ♦10 from dummy. If West wins this with the king, East will be squeezed in diamonds and clubs. And if East wins the first diamond he is forced to return a diamond with the same result. After the spade ruff Eiriksson came to hand with ♣K, cashed one high heart and played a diamond for West who returned ♠J. East overruffed the ♥2 and exited with a club to finish all declarer´s aspirations. At the other BBO-table EW went one off in 4♠ doubled. At my table North played a diamond in trick 2 for the 10 and the king. West cashed one spade and returned ♥J. Declarer won, ruffed a spade, came to hand with a diamond ruff, cashed one high heart and gave East a heart. East cunningly returned ♣J but declarer could not go wrong. He won in hand and played two more rounds of hearts: 9 16th International Bridge Festival MADEIRA ♠– ♥7 ♦– ♣43 ♠ 10 7 ♥– ♦– ♣Q N W E S ♠– ♥– ♦A ♣76 ♠– ♥– ♦Q ♣ A 10 East was known to hold ♦A so declarer played a club to the ace for ten tricks. An even better line would have been to give up the spade ruff. So after ♠A, a diamond to the 10, ♠J and ♥J declarer should play a heart to the 10 and run the ♣8. East wins and returns a heart or a club. Now on the run of the hearts a double squeeze will materialize with ♠8 as a menace against West, ♦Q as a menace against East and clubs as the double threat suit. Played this way 4♥ would have been made also if West had had ♣Qxx. At tables A1 through A10 the contract of 4♥ was only made once. Five declarers went down in 4♥ and two declarer s were in 5♥. East was allowed to play 3♠ twice. The NS-pairs at tables B1 through B10 did much better. Eight of them made 4♥, one with an overtrick and one with even two overtricks. Only one declarer went down in 4♥. So a tip for all kibitzers: if you want to see the best players in action today, be sure to get a seat at one of the B-tables.
