Introduction
This genealogy was prepared by Roderick Beebe Sullivan, Jr.,
with help from Marcia (Sullivan) Fenn, Daniel Emory
Sullivan, Paul Sullivan, Roderick Beebe Sullivan, Sr, Madeline
(Jones) Osgood, Patience (Jones) Ellis, and many others. It
documents the genealogy of Paul and Ursula (Jones) Sullivan
who resided in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, NY during the
early to mid 1900s. Paul's father had been very successful in
the lumber business there, but died at a relatively young age.
Ursula descends directly from Solomon Jones, an early,
influential settler of Jamestown.
Solomon Jones, Founder of the Jones
Family in Jamestown
Paul Revere Sullivan descends from James Sullivan and Julia
Carthy of Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland, through their
son Michael Sullivan, who came to Salamanca, NY from
Ireland (by way of England) in 1869. It remains a mystery
exactly why. Michael and his wife Susan Deane had at least
four children, two of whom died young, two of whom moved
to Jamestown, NY.
The source of the information presented in this document is cited with superscripts, and presented at the
end in the "Sources And Endnotes" chapter. Sources include personal recollections, local histories,
cemetery inscriptions, census records, the Social Security Death Index, and vital records.

Descent of Paul Revere Sullivan from Michael Sullivan,
of Ireland

1. Michael Sullivan, born about 1833, in Ireland, bapt. 7 Nov 1833, in Townland of Angram, Village
2
3
of Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland, died 21 Jan 1920, in Machias, Cattaraugus Co, NY. He married
2,4,5
Susan Deane 29 Jan 1861, in Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland. She was the daughter of Robert
6
Deane and Mary Kingston. Susan Deane was born about 1833, in Ireland, died 24 Apr 1909, in
7,8
Salamanca, Cattaraugus Co, NY.
Michael was born in the townland of Angram, Village of Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland, the son of
James Sullivan and Julia Carthy. His baptism is recorded in the Drimoleague/Drinagh RC Parish
registers of baptisms and marriages. It was 'sponsored' by Pat Sullivan and Ellen Carthy.
Two years after their son Daniel was born, Michael and his wife Susan removed from County Cork,
where they resided, to Woolwich, England, where they remained for four years before emigrating to the
United States. Michael came first, in 1869. After a long voyage he arrived in New York City, and
travelled immediately to Salamanca, NY, where he established residence next to Jerry Sullivan and his
family. Susan came in 1870 on the ship China, with her four children. (Source: "History of Chautauqua
County and Its People", John P. Downs, Editor, Fenwick Y. Hedley, Editor in Chief, American
Historical Society, Inc., 1921, Vol 2, pg. 369, Biography of Daniel A. Sullivan; 1870 New York Census;
and New York Passenger Records, www.Ancestry.com).
A year after their arrival in this country, Michael and Susan appear in the 1870 New York Census living
in Salamanca, NY (pg 47 on the Ancestry.Com census images). Michael, age 33 was a railroad
employee, born in Ireland. His wife, Susan, age 33, was also born in Ireland. Four children are listed,
James Sullivan, age 8, born in Ireland, Daniel Sullivan age 6, born in Ireland, Julia Sullivan, age 4, born
in Ireland, and Jerry Sullivan, age 1, born in England.
The family appears in the census next to the household of Jerry Sullivan, age 35, and his wife, Briget
Sullivan, age 28, both born in Ireland. Jerry and Briget's children, James (12), Timothy (7), and Mary
(5), were all born in New York; implying that Jerry and Briget came over from Ireland no later than
1858, a full 10 years before Michael and Susan came over. Though not yet proven, it is likely that Jerry
Sullivan was Michael's brother. The evidence is this: (1) like Michael, Jerry named his first son James,
after his father, (2) a Jeremiah Sullivan appears as an occupier of land in the townland of Angram in
1852, not far from Michael Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan, and Andrew Sullivan, and (3) the 1870 Census
record shows a Julia McCarty, age 48, living in the household of Jerry Sullivan. At the age of 48, this is
not likely Michael's mother, but could be a close relative.
Michael and Susan appear in the 1880 New York Census, again in Salamanca, NY. Michael, age 45,

was a railroad laborer. Susan, his wife, age 47, kept house. The same children are listed, with the
exception of Julia, who is absent. James, age 19, is a railroad brakeman, Daniel, age 17, and Jerry, age
11.
Michael and Susan Sullivan again appear in the 1900 Census living in Salamanca. (The entry is indexed
under "Sulli" in the Ancestry.com images, May 2006.) The birthdate for Michael is given as 1824, and
Susan, 1827, both born in Ireland. They had been married 40 years, placing their marriage around 1860.
According to her census entry, Susan had a total of 4 children, 2 of whom were still living. Michaels
occupation was given as farmer, no schooling was indicated, nor could he read or write.
Michael and Susan Sullivan, of West Salamanca, NY, were both living when their son, Daniel A.
Sullivan died in 1904. The death announcement indicates that he was also survived by his brother, Jerry
B. Sullivan "of this city" [Jamestown]. (Source: Death Announcement for D. A. Sullivan, written the
day of his death, 17 May 1904, possibly for publication in a local newspaper; supplied by Marcia
(Sullivan) Fenn.)
They are enumerated in the 1905 New York Census living in West Salamanca, NY; Michael, age 70,
born Ireland, a citizen for 36 years; Susan, age 81, born Ireland, a citizen for 35 years. In the same
dwelling is Michael Fanain(?), age 49, born in the United States.
Michael was alive when his wife died in 1909, per her obituary in the 24 Apr 1909 Republican Press.
A Michael Sullivan, born about 1836 in Ireland, is enumerated in the 1910 Federal Census living in the
Cattaraugus County poorhouse, in Machias. The records of admission to the Machias poorhouse were
searched thoroughly for Michael Sullivan, but no record of admission was found. (Src: Census of
Inmates in Almshouses and Poorhouses 1875-1920, NY Archives in Albany, NY)
Michael Sullivan died in Machias 21 January 1920. His death notice in the Thursday, 22 Jan 1920
edition of the Salamanca Republican Press, page 5, reads as follows: "Michael Sullivan, a resident of
Fair Oaks Street for the past eight years, until two weeks ago, died at Machias, Wednesday morning at 5
o'clock, following a brief illness. He was 86 years of age. He is survived by one son, Jerry B. Sullivan of
Jamestown."
According to his death certificate, Michael Sullivan died of arterio sclerosis in the Cattaraugas County
Hospital in Machias. He had been in Machias for 14 days before his death. His residence and place of
burial is listed as Salamanca. He was a widower; his birth date is given as 1828, age at death - 92 (in
disagreement with the newspaper article and some of the census records).
Susan's last name is given as 'Dane' in the Woolwich, County Kent, England birth record for her son,
Jeremiah Sullivan. (Src: UK Birth Certificate, Vol 1d, Page 827, registered May 1869, Woolwich, Kent
County, England; index at www.FreeBMD.org.uk). However, her death record, and that of her son Jerry
both identify her last name as 'Dean', which is confirmed by the records in the Drimoleague/Drinagh RC
parish registers, which identifies her name as 'Deane'. (Src: Susan Sullivan's 1909 Death Record,

Susan Sullivan, age 30, arrived in New York 1 June 1870 on the ship "China" (number 155 on the
passenger list), with Julia, age 4, Jeremiah, infant, James, age 7, and Daniel, age 6. Michael is not listed
on this voyage, having come to Salamanca a year earlier.
Susan appears in Salamanca with her husband Michael in federal census records from 1870 through
1900, and in the 1905 NY state census.
Her death notice appears in The Republican Press (Salamanca), Saturday, April 24th, 1909, page 5. It
reads as follows: "Mrs. Susan wife of Michael Sullivan of West Salamanca, died at the hospital this
morning at 4 o'clock, aged 74 years. She broke her hip over a year ago, and had been in the hospital ever
since. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Jerry Sullivan of Jamestown. The funeral will be
held from St. Patricks Church Monday morning at 9 o'clock, with interment at Killbuck."
Her death record identifies her parents as Robert Dean and Mary Kingston, both born in Ireland. (Src:
Susan Sullivan's 1909 Death Record, Salamanca, State of New York, Certificate number 18191.)
Children of Michael Sullivan and Susan Deane:
i.
James Deane Sullivan, born about 1861, in Village of Angram, Drimoleague,
9
County Cork, Ireland, bapt. 11 Dec 1861, in Village of Angram, Drimoleague,
2
County Cork, Ireland. Occupation: Railroad Brakeman.
The baptism record of James Deane Sullivan is found in the Drimoleague/Drinagh
Roman Catholic Parish Registers, County Cork, Ireland. The address is given as
Angram, his middle name is identified as Deane. The baptism was 'sponsored' by
Tim Regan and Norry Sullivan.

ii.
iii.
James must have died between 1880, when he appears in the census records for
Salamanca, NY, and 1900, when his mother is listed in the Salamanca census, with
2 of 4 children still living. Since both Daniel and Jeremiah were known to be alive
in 1900, James and his sister Julia must have died.
Daniel Ash Sullivan, born 12 Apr 1863, in Village of Angram, Drimoleague,
5
5
County Cork, Ireland, died 17 May 1904, in Jamestown, NY.
10
Julia Sullivan, born about 1866, in England.
Julia's baptism record is not found in the Drimoleague/Drinagh RC parish registers.
Despite the 1870 US Federal Census record (which says she was born in Ireland), it
is likely that Julia was born after the family moved to England.

iv.
Julia appears in the 1870 Census, but not in the 1880 or later census records. Julia
was deceased by 1900, per her mother's 1900 Salamanca census record.
Jeremiah B. Sullivan, born 29 Mar 1869, in Woolwich, County of Kent,
11,12
13,14
England, died 27 Sep 1927, in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co, NY, buried in
15
Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, NY. He married Esther M Peterson. Esther M

15
Peterson was born 1879, in Sweden, died 1926, buried in Lake View Cemetery,
15
Jamestown, NY.
The 1870 Census indicates that Jerry, age 1, was born in England. This is consistent
with the biography of his brother, Daniel, which states that the family moved from
County Cork, Ireland, to Olewitch (sic) England four years before coming to
Salamanca, NY. There is no Olewitch in England, but a birth record for Jeremiah
B. Sullivan was found in Woolwich, England. He was born 29 Mar 1869, in
Woolwich, son of Michael Sullivan (bricklayer, laborer) and Susan (Dane)
Sullivan. (Src: UK Birth Certificate, Vol 1d, Page 827, registered May 1869,
Woolwich, County of Kent, England)
Jerry Sullivan, engineer, born in England, parents born in Ireland, age 30, is
enumerated in the 1900 census, a boarder living in Jamestown. He is single.
Jerry B. Sullivan, of Jamestown, NY, is mentioned as a surviving brother in the
death announcement of Daniel A. Sullivan, 17 May 1904. A separate article
covering the funeral service mentions the attendance of Jerry and Julia Sullivan,
from Greenville, PA.
Jerry B. Sullivan, age 39, is enumerated in the 1910 Census living in Ward 6,
Jamestown, NY, with Esther, his wife, age 30, Alice, age 7, and Winnifred, age 4.
A Jerry Sullivan is enumerated in the 1920 Census living in Jamestown, NY. An
engineer, age 49, born in England, parents born in Ireland, he is married to Esther,
age 40, born in Sweden, with two children, Alice, age 17, and Winifred, age 13. His
sister in law is living in the same residence, Nellie Peterson, age 33.
Jerry Sullivan's death notice appears on page 6 of the Jamestown Evening Journal,
27 Sep 1927. It reads as follows: "Jerry B. Sullivan, 27 Stewart Ave, died this
afternoon at 1:40 O'clock at the Jamestown General Hospital, aged 59 years. He is
survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alfred Farr of Chautauqua, and Miss Winifred
Sullivan, of Jamestown, and a grandchild at Chautauqua. Mr. Sullivan was a
member of the Mt. Tabor lodge, I. O. O. F., and the National Association of
Stationary Engineers."
The birth date on Jerry's Woolwich, England birth certificate (29 Mar 1869),
conflicts with that given on his death certificate (15 Apr 1868), and on his

Esther's last name of Peterson is given by the death certificate of her husband.

was born 12 Sep 1865, in Warren, PA, died 27 Feb 1919, in Jamestown, NY, buried in Lake View

Daniel was born in the townland of Angram, Village of Drimoleague, County Cork, Ireland. His baptism
is recorded in the Drimoleague/Drinagh Roman Catholic Parish registers. The date, 11 December 1861,
coincides with the date of birth given in his biography in "History of Chautauqua County and Its
People", by John P. Downs. The baptism was 'sponsored' by Daniel Sullivan (possibly an uncle) and
Mary Manly. No middle name is recorded for Daniel in the parish registers.
The following biography of D. A. Sullivan appears in "The History of Chautauqua County and Its
People", Downs and Hedley, 1921.
Daniel A. Sullivan, who was for many years one of the most prominent figures in the lumber interests of
Chautauqua county, NY, and whose death at his home in Jamestown, May 17, 1904, was felt as a severe
loss by the entire community, was a native of County Cork, Ireland, where his birth occurred April 12,
1863, a son of Michael and Susan Sullivan. He was but two years of age when his parents removed with
him to England and settled in the town of Olewitch (sic), where they made their home for about four
years. They had in the meantime, however, determined to come to the United States, and in 1869 set sail
for this country, and after a long voyage reach the port of New York City. It is probable that their
destination had already been determnined upon before leaving England, as they did not tarry in the
metropolis, but came on at once to the city of Salamanca, NY, where they have since made their home.
Daniel A. Sullivan was but six years of age at that time, and his childhood and early youth were spent at
Salamanca, where he attended the local public schools and obtained his education. He was still young,
however, when he gave up his studies and went to the village of Red House and there secured
employment with Daniel Griswold, who was one of the pioneer lumbermen of the region. Mr. Sullivan
was sent to work as a woodman in this region, and for a time worked in that capacity for Mr. Griswold.
He was exceedingly ambitious, however, to become independent in business, but realized that further
education would be a valuable asset to him before embarking on an enterprise of his own. Accordingly,
he became a member Mr. Griswold's household in Jamestown and there attended the high school until
he had qualified himself as a teacher. Mr. Sullivan then was appointed to take charge of a school near
his old home at Salamanca, and taught in that institution for one year. He was keenly interested in his
profession and decided to study further in order to perfect himself in that line. About this time, however,
his attention was forcibly called to the great oppourtunities offered by the lumber business, and by the
time he had completed his course of study at the Fredonia Normal School, Fredonia, NY, he had

practically decided to take up this occupation. For two years he rafted lumber for a Mr. Quinn on the
Allegheny River, below Corydon, transporting the rough logs down that stream to the southern market,
where he disposed of them for his employer. During this time he made the acquaintance of Mr. Robert
Carson, of Randolph, and entered his employ, opening for him a general store at Quaker Bridge. He also
looked after the lumber interests of Mr. Carson, and continued thus occupied until the spring of 1893,
making his home at Quaker Bridge in the meantime. In that year, however, he severed his connection
with his employer and came to Jamestown, NY. Here he formed a copartnership with C. A. Breed and
D. D. Hazeltine, under the name of the Union Lumber Company, and began operations [illegible]. In the
year 1894, Messrs. Breed and Hazeltine retired from the business, leaving Mr. Sullivan the sole
proprietor thereof, who continued it under the old name until 1897. He then admitted M. D. Stone into
the concern as a partner, who remained with him until 1903, after which Mr. Sullivan became once more
the sole proprietor of the company. His business developed to large proportions under his exceedingly
capable management, and he was regarded as one of the most substantial citizens of Jamestown, his
home there, which was situated at No. 314 West Fifth street, being one of the handsomest in the place.
He was very active in the general life of the community, and was especially prominent in Masonic
circles, being a member of all the Masonic bodies in the city. He was also offiliated with the Jamestown
Club, and was a director of the bank in Jamestown for many years. The Masonic bodies with which Mr.
Sullivan was connected were as follows: Mt. Moriah Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons;
Western Sun Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Jamestown Council, Royal and Select Masters; Jamestown
Commandery, Knights Templar; Ismailia Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine;
Buffalo Consistory, Sovereign Princes of the Roiyal Secret; and the Jamestown Lodge of Perfection. He
was also a member of Jamestown Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Daniel A. Sullivan was united in marriage, May 9, 1888, with Mary Elizabeth Grunder, of Warren, Pa.,
and they became the parents of two children: Irene S., who resides at the family home at Jamestown, and
Paul Revere, who is mentioned at length below. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were members of the
Presbyterian church, and are buried in Lake View Cemetery here, the death of the latter occuring Feb 27,
1919.
Paul Revere Sullivan, only son of Daniel A. and Mary Elizabeth (Grunder) Sullivan, was born at
Jamestown, Dec. 4, 1894. He attended as a lad the public schools of this city, and later the Military
Academy at Poughkeepsie, NY, from which he was graduated with the class of 1914. He then took a
commercial course at the Bryant & Stratton's Business College at Buffalo, upon completing which he
returned to Jamestown, where he became interested in the automobile business. He continued in this line
until the entrance of the United States into the great World War, when he enlisted as a member of the
Reserve Force Aviation Service, connected with the United States Navy. He served therein until the
close of the war, when he was retired with the rank of ensign. Upon receiving his honorable discharge,
Mr. Sullivan reentered the automobile business and has already met with considerable success in this
line. He is a Presbyterian in his religious belief and attends the church of that denomination in
Jamestown.
Paul Revere Sullivan married, May 10, 1919, at Jamestown, Ursula Jones, a daughter of Cyrus E. and
Mary (Beebe) Jones, old and higly respected residents of Jamestown.

At the time of the death of Daniel A. Sullivan, there was printed a long obituary article dealing with his
life, in the course of which the following appears: "At the time of his death he was at the head of the
Union Lumber Company and his business abilities won for him a recognized place among the lumber
dealers of the country. Just and honorable in his dealings, [several illegible words] kind-hearted in his
family relations, his [illegible] [illegible] be regretted by all who knew him, and his family will have the
sympathy of the community in their great bereavement."

Another biography of D. A. Sullivan indicates that he was born "near the city of Cork"; and that he
resided at 314 West Fifth St, Jamestown, NY at the time of his death. (Source: "Biography of Daniel A.

According to oral tradition, Daniel Sullivan had no middle name when he arrived in the United States.
Because Americans were expected to have a middle name, he adopted the name of "Ash"; a tribute to
the wood with which he worked. (Source: Daniel Emory Sullivan.)

3. Henry D. Grunder, born about 1796, in Germany.
Henry D. Grunder is enumerated in the 1850 Census living in Pleasant Twp, Warren Co, PA, a
lumberman, age 54, born in Germany. Residing in the same household is John Grunder, age 23, born
NY, lumberman; Henry Grunder, age 17, born PA, lumberman; Daniel Grunder, age 10, born PA; Lewis
Grunder, age 7, born PA; and Catherine Grunder, age 14, born PA.
Most of the information about the Grunder family is taken from a genealogy prepared by Kris Adrienne
Oburg Dell, a descendant of Mary Elizabeth Grunder's sister, Irene Narcissus Grunder. Though Kris
does not specifically mention Henry D. Grunder as the immigrant ancestor for this line, she does
enumerate the children of Henry D. Grunder (showing the father as "Unknown Grunder"), and with
minor exceptions they agree with the children of Henry D. Grunder as listed in the 1850 Census. She
lists two daughters who do not appear in the household when the census was taken, probably because
they had already moved out. These were Mary Grunder and Elizabeth Grunder.
This is, no doubt, the Henry D. Grunder (d. 1871) who is buried in Westfield Cemetery, in Warren,
Warren Co, PA.

(now Dover), VT, about 1793, when Solomon was 19 years old. He married Clarissa Hayward eldest
daughter of John and Mary (Pease) Hayward Nov 1798 in Dover, VT. In October 1810 he, his wife, and
eight children moved to Chautauqua and settled on the Stillwater, arriving there 1 Nov 1810. He was
one of the earliest settlers of Jamestown, where he operated a tavern for years, and was a Justice of

Bama died of 'degeneration of spinal cord', according to records on file at Lake View Cemetery. Her
obituary, included verbatim below, was published 27 Aug 1952, probably in the Jamestown Evening
Journal, and was kindly supplied by Blaikie and Andrea Purvis, June 2003:
Mrs. Mary Beebe Jones, 84 widow of Cyrus Emory Jones died this morning at 3:30 o'clock at the home
of her eldest daughter Mrs. Harvey M. Osgood and Mr. Osgood, 7 Ridgley Terrace. She had been in
frail health for many weeks. Funeral service will be held at the family residence.
Mrs. Jones was born in Brooklyn on June 25, 1868 daughter of General Ira L. Beebe and Zilpha Hart,
and came to Jamestown in 1897. She was the mother of seven children, Mrs. Osgood, Mrs. Paul R.
Sullivan and Roderick B. Jones of this city. Mrs. Arthur Blaikie Purvis in Montreal, Canada and Mrs.
William E. Kugeman, Jr. in Ankara, Turkey, who survive. 2 sons Cyrus Emory Jones Jr. and Beebe
Jones preceded her in death.
There are also 11 grandchildren. Emory M. Osgood of Youngstown, Ohio, Mrs. Wilson Rood of Puerto
Rico, Arthur Blaikie Purvis, Jr. of Montreal, Canada, Roderick Beebe Jones, Jr. with U.S. Air Corp in
Naples, Italy, Marcia and Patience Jones in Oakville, Ontario; Roderick Sullivan, U.S. Navy in Norfolk
Virginia, Paul Beebe Sullivan and Mrs. Mary Sullivan McGee, Miss Joan R. Sullivan and Daniel
Sullivan of Jamestown; with 7 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Jones was a sister of the late Mrs. E. Walton Spring, for whose son, Ira Lou Spring, the American
Legion Post here is named.
A woman of charming presence, Mrs. Jones wore the mantle of years gracefully and was deeply beloved
in many circles. She was a member of a coterie of prominent Jamestown women at the turn of the
century, which through the years charted the course of many organizations which have played an
important role in the good works and cultural advancement of Jamestown. She was the first chairman of
the Ways and Means committee of the W.C.A. Hospital back in 1910, an early member of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, the Mozart Club, and the former New Century Art Club. A devoted
member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as a past president of its Needlework Guild.
Always a patron of the arts, her old family residence on Fairmont Avenue was a mecca for the amateur
theatrical venture of the old Players Club from which the Little Theatre of Jamestown evolved in 1936.
Mrs. Jones was a zealous pianist, and to the end of her long life found keen enjoyment in her music with
discriminating taste of an artist. Her alert sense of humour and gay loveliness deeply endeared her to
everyone with whom she came in contact, her last birthday party in June being a brilliant occasion of the
early summer.
Mrs. Jones exhibited her rare qualities of understanding and leadership as the years lengthened bringing
frail health and the sorrow of relinquishing many close friends to death. She added patrician dignity to
her social sponsorship the youthful Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, which she assumed nearly 10 years ago.
She first served the position in Beta Mu Chapter, later transferring to the Xi Sigma Exemplar Chapter.
The fastidious happiness of her youthful attitudes and enthusiasm survived the toll of years to an

amazing degree with her life completely enfolded in the beautiful devotion of her large family.
Mr. Jones, who died in 1922, long and important in the industrial affairs of Jamestown and Chautauqua
County, was one of the founders of the former Jamestown Morning Post and the Manufacturers
Association. He was also one of the group which organized the Furniture Manufacturers Building, Inc.
and built the Exposition Building at West Second and Washington Streets. He served as first president
of the company. As a furniture manufacturer, he was associated first with the Bailey-Jones Table
Company and later with the Jamestown Table Company, and was one of the organizers of the former
Chautauqua School of Nursing. He owned one of the first automobiles in Jamestown. Mr. Jones many
years ago erected the Grange Building at Chautauqua in memory of his father Rev. Emory Jones, a
Wesleyan Methodist minister. A close friend of former Governor Nathan L. Miller, Mr. Jones served as
a member of the New York State Hospital Commission in the Miller Administration in the early 20s.
Active in Republican Party affairs for a long period, he was twice a delegate to the Republican National
Convention, first in 1908 and again in 1920.

overlooking Lake Chautauqua, is accessed by a long driveway, off of Route 430, .2 miles south of
Weaver Rd. In 2003, the building was razed, and a private residence was erected in its place.)
His obituary appeared in the Jamestown Post-Journal, Sunday, 16 Nov 2008:
Roderick Beebe Sullivan, 83, of Naples, Florida, passed away on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 in the
Naples Community Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born Nov 15th, 1924 in Jamestown, NY, the
second son of Paul Revere and Ursula (Jones) Sullivan. He grew up near Bemus Point, where he
graduated from high school in 1942, a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity, and the varsity baseball and
basketball teams. He joined the Navy in 1943, as a quartermaster 3rd class. During World War II he
served on a troop carier in the Pacific, where he participated in many engagements, including the battle
at Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946, and shortly thereafter entered Colgate University.
His education was interupted, however, by the Korean War, during which he served as Quartermaster
1st class in the Pacific and the Mediteranean.
He graduated with a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, after
which he moved to Connecticut with his young family, and worked for many years at the Connecticut
Light and Power Company. During his time with CL&P he worked out of the Bristol, Meriden, and
Enfield offices. He was active in the Congregational Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School
teacher, and leader of the Christian Youth Fellowship group. He was a member of the Rotary Club, and
was President of the Enfield Rotary. He was a member of the United Way, serving as chairman of the

industrial division, was active in the Chamber of Commerce, and was a Mason (Doric Lodge).
He retired from CL&P in 1986, and enjoyed many years in Naples, Florida, where he loved playing golf.
He is survived by his two sons, Roderick B. Sullivan, Jr. and his wife, Pat Lebau, of Northborough, MA,
and Kevin E. Sullivan and his wife, Lauren, of West Newbury, MA; and four grandchildren, Aaron,
Alexander, Paige, and Connor. He is also survived by his loving companion in retirement, Jane Clarke.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Beebe Sullivan, of Jamestown, NY, Daniel Emory Sullivan,
of Stittsville, Ontario, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Kelman, of Jamestown, NY, and Joan Hartung, of
Sedalia, MO.
Betty Wheelock descends from Rev. Ralph Wheelock, a Puritan who emigrated to America from
England in 1636. The Wheelocks were very prominent in the development of early New England,
having founded numerous towns, as well as Wheelock College in Boston, and Dartmouth College in
New Hampshire. The Wheelocks moved on to play a leading role in the settlement of the midwestern
states, and Texas.
