Most Complex Level (at the level as written): Content target: After hearing or reading text the student will use words from the text to identify the author’s point of view. Example: Students read/listen to text Modified Text: Lots of boys and girls play baseball. Families come to see them play and they cheer! Sometimes parents are not good sports and make bad choices. They get mad and shout at kids or the coaches. Some run onto the field during the game. Those parents can spoil the fun. Mike Blackwell wanted to fix the problem. He came up with a solution – baseball fields that separate parents from the players. He added new baseball fields on small hills called mounds. Parents can’t see the game unless they sit on the benches. There are also fences that keep parents off the field. Now parents must stay in their seats to watch the baseball game. Now more kids want to play. Baseball is lots of fun when everyone is a good sport! Examples: 1. What does he say parents do at the game? (Watch their children play baseball) 2. What does he say happens when parents are not good sports? (they shout at kids or coaches; run onto the field) 3. What did Mike Blackwell want to do? (stop parents from coming on the field or shouting at the players) 4. Where does the author think parents should sit? (benches) Why? 5. What does the author think parents should do at baseball games? (sit in benches) 2. Mid-Complex Level: • Content target: After hearing or reading text the student will select a picture to identify the author’s point of view. • Example: Use visuals/objects to support learning and the unique learning needs of the student. Modify language as appropriate for your student. Modified text: Boys and girls play baseball. Moms and dads watch! Some moms and dads make bad choices. They get mad and yell or go onto the field. New baseball fields were made on top of hills. Moms and dads must sit on the seats on the hill to see the game. Sitting in the seats stops them from yelling and going onto the field. Now baseball is more fun! Example: Student listen to or read the story. Pose the question, “What does the author think parents should do at baseball games?” Present 3 choices of parents depicting the following behavior: sit in seats, yell, or drive. Yell Sit Drive 3. Least Complex Level: • Content target: After reading the text to the student, the student will select a picture to identify the author’s point of view. Sometimes they get mad. Sometimes they yell. Moms and dads should sit in their seats to watch. They should not yell and get mad. When moms and dads sit and watch, baseball is fun!
