Chilean Vineyard Geography - Chile is dominated by the Andes

Chile has established itself as a major supplier of quality wines all over the world, especially in the U.K. We
generally associate Chile with Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, but with near perfect growing conditions, Chile
produces a wide variety of styles from sweet wines such as Late Harvest Moscatel to a variety of oak aged
Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Pinot Noir. Key ranges such as Los Pastos, Pelusas, Los
Espinos, Nostros, Concha y Toro, and Casa Silva offer very high quality and excellent value for money which is
why there are so many of our
and ££ in this section.
Chilean Vineyard Geography - Chile is dominated by the Andes Mountains and has the benefit of
cooling coastal mists rolling in from the Pacific Ocean to premium vineyard areas like Casablanca
Valley. The Andes protect the vineyards from insects and pests and from the usual vine growing
problems like frost and mildew. The soil or terroir is also very important here – mainly sand and
gravel that drains well and keeps out the dreaded phylloxera aphid. Many of the best quality
vineyards in Casablanca benefit from being grown on a hilly aspect. Winemakers here and at
Colchagua Valley are now learning to match specific topography with the best relevant grape
variety producing even higher quality grapes and some stunning resulting wines.

CRISTIAN CARRASCO MOREL
Young innovative winemaker at Vistamar and
Morande who works closely alongside head
winemaker Irene Paiva. Cristian has a passion for
caring for and nurturing his vines and making sure
they are always in prime condition to bear maximum
levels of pure, ripe fruit at harvest. He has an
instinctive feeling for the sustainability of the
beautiful environment it which he works, the
importance of nature in the vineyard and the care
and attention to detail regarding structured irrigation
and pruning. In the winery and visitors centre called HOME, Cristian has been at the forefront of an
innovation with “egg“ shaped vessels that give natural centrifugal movement to the wine developing a
more concentrated varietal fruit character and complexity before maturation. We look forward to
tasting the results of this pioneering work in the years ahead.

Luscious lip smacking Malbec with lots of succulent tasty fruit. Aged 10-12
months in French and American oak results in a toffee and vanilla flavour
and an elegant integrated finish.
This wine is a real bargain as it is a Reserva at a really good price. The fruit is
very proper Pinot Noir with a broad, gamey appeal, juicy berry flavours and a
slightly spicy finish.
This wine has the intense pungency and flavours of a classic ‘gamey’ Pinot Noir
whilst expressing a lot of elegance. Extremely attractive and at a very favourable
price for the quality. Recommended by Oz Clarke.
70% Cabernet and 30% Carmenère produces very fresh and intense currant
flavours with notes of allspice and cedar. Soft tannins and excellent balance give
a very long lingering aftertaste and show why Casa Silva is Chile’s most award
winning producer.

INDOMITA
Led by Roberto Carranca, the young and dynamic
winemaking team at Viña Indomita skilfully craft
wines from their great vineyard holdings in two of
Chile's very best regions.
Viña Indomita benefits from having the best
climates for both whites and reds. Whites such as
Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay thrive in the cool
climate of the Casablanca Valley, the result of the
Pacific's icy Humboldt current and early morning
fog.
Reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère flourish in the sandy, fast draining soils of the Maipo
Valley.
The Los Espinos wines are made from grapes grown at Las Pitras vineyards, a dry farmed, old river bed
vineyard in the Central Valley. The vineyards are farmed according to organic principals and the fantastic
quality fruit is harvested slightly earlier rather than later to make wines that are fresh, lively and very
drinkable.
