Public Hearing, Aug. 8 , 8:00 p.m.
Town Hall Meeting Room
In 2009, the Town of Durham began
improvements to the public works site to
become compliant with DEP Storm Water
Discharge regulations. 20% of the site was
encumbered. To maximize site efficiency the
new building must be moved from its original
location. This relocation will require a:
New foundation
Retaining wall
Improvements above replacement cost
Increased square footage from 5400 to 6800
feet.
Increased height from 12 feet to 22 feet.
Addition of a lift and compressor.
Addition of a wash bay (required by DEP).
This will allow for
Increased storage of salt sand mix,
*increased buying power and *increased
productivity.
In house vehicle maintenance.
Increased vehicle storage capacity.
Additional vehicle and equipment storage.
Adequate working and storage conditions
improving safety for employees and
security for equipment.
Increased security of assets.
Benefits to the town
Decreased man hours and overtime wages
in the winter.
Decreased vehicle expense with in-house
maintenance.
Increased vehicle and equipment security
Storm water discharge compliance.
Safer Working Environment
Energy Efficiency
Building Code & OSHA Compliance
Secured building
The original building was a carriage shed style
building that dates back earlier than when the town
purchased the property in 1979. It most likely was
used to house farm animals and had dirt floors.
Over the years it was slowly modified to fit the
needs of the public work department but was never
fully upgraded. The building was never compliant
with modern building codes.
The proposed building will be code compliant in the
following areas:

The original building (A) was comprised of (5) small bays and (1) large bay.
Bays 1 and 2 were used for storage of materials.
Bay 3, 4 and 5 were used for storage of small vehicles such as pickup
trucks, backhoe, paving box, large mower and all types of equipment.
One half of the large bay was used to store salt and the other half salt
and sand mix. Mixing of the salt and sand was done during a storm for
each pass through town and after each storm to get ready for the next
storm.
The new building (B) will be comprised of (4) small bays and (1) large bay.
Bays 1 and 2 will be used as vehicle maintenance & storage bays; one
will include a lift and compressor that will enable public works
employees to do vehicle maintenance.
Bay 3 will be used to store vehicles and equipment.
Bay 4 will be used for vehicle storage and will include a wash bay that is
a DEP requirement for storm water compliance.
The large bay will be used to store a mix of salt and sand. Because of
its size mixing will only have to be done twice during a storm season.
