Remembering Strategies Carousel

teaching carousel. At each of the station carousels you will have 10mins to read
about and solve the remembering challenge and fill in the organizer.

Station #1 – Rhyme/Song
Definition: Rhyme is a technique for remembering facts by forming rhymes
When to Use: When you need to remember words that sound alike or long
processes with many steps.
Type of learner: musical or word smart
How do you use it: Write a line that ends with a word to be remembered
Write a second line that ends with a word that rhymes with the
word to be remembered.
OR
Find a song or a tune and create lyrics
Examples of use: definitions, word lists, spelling, processes, and/or time lines
Example: ‘In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.’

2. Write/Guess the rhyme for the following facts.
Fact
When spelling a word with an ‘e’ and ‘i’ the ‘i’ will
come before the ‘e’ unless it is followed by the
letter ‘c’
Poison ivy is a plant with three leaves and if it
comes in contact with your skin it can cause a
serious reaction.
Rainbows indicate humid air. A morning rainbow
is seen in the West – the direction from which
storms generally come – and so often appears
before bad weather. Evening rainbows, which
appear in the East, usually indicate the passing
of stormy weather

Station #2 – Acronym
Definition: Acronym is a technique for remembering facts by forming a word using
the first letter of each fact to be remembered.
When to Use: When you want to remember facts who’s first letters can be
arranged to form a real word or a non-sense word that could be pronounced.
Type of Learner: visual, logical, or word smarts
How do you use it: Write the facts
Underline the first letter of each fact
Arrange the underlined letters to form a real word or a
non-sense word you could pronounce.
Examples of use: the order of things, important names, places.
Example: Great lakes – Ontario, Erie, Michigan, Huron, And Superior - HOMES

Station #3 – Mnemonic Devices
Definition: Mnemonic is a technique for remembering facts by creating a sentence
from words whose first letters help you remember the facts.
When to Use: When you need to remember a number of facts that are difficult to
remember.
Type of Learner: Logical and music smart
How do you use it: Write the facts
Underline the first letter of each fact
Come up with words that start with the same first letter and
arrange them into a sentence.
Examples of use: memorizing long lists, places, and/or rules.
Example: Planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune

Station #4 – Graphic Organizer
Definition: Graphic organizers are a visual technique for remembering information
that contains a topic, sub-topic, and details.
When to Use: When you need to remember lots of information that is directly
related.
Type of Learner: Visual and body smarts
How do you use it:
Write the topic for the information you need to remember
Write the subtopics for the topic
Write the details for each topic
Draw the graphic organizer
Examples of use: classification of data, lists,
concepts, class notes.

Station #5 – Mind Picture
Definition: Mind Picture is a technique for remembering facts by forming one or
more pictures in your mind.
When to Use: When you need to remember diagrams, maps, and/or other
information that can easily be put into a picture.
Type of Learner: Picture smarts
How do you use it: 1. Say the facts
2. Create one or more pictures in your mind to

Station #6 – Grouping
Definition: Grouping is a technique for remembering facts that go together in some
way.
When to Use: When you need to know facts that link together or make connections
between various groups or categories.
Type of Learner: Logic smarts
How do you use it: 1. Look for ways that the facts can be
grouped together
2. Write a name for each group
3. Write the facts that go with each group
Examples of use: compare and/or contracts, characteristics of
certain things/places.

Station #7 – Repetition
Definition: Repetition is a technique for remembering facts in which you read,
write, and say the facts a number of times.
When to Use: When you need to remember a few facts, usually not more than four
or five.
Type of Learner: Word and logic smarts

4. Repeat the first three steps four or more times
Example of use: memorizing a phone number, dates, or definitions.
