2015-2016 FACTS ABOUT DECA To DECA Advisors: Please share the following information with your chapter officers and all chapter members. This information is designed to be used in conjunction with the Chapter Advisor's Handbook. Members, chapter officers, district, state and national officer candidates should be very familiar with this information. 1. Mission Statement: DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. 2. The Executive Director of National DECA is Paul Wardinski. The mailing address for National DECA is: DECA 1908 Association Drive Reston, Virginia 20191-1594 3. The four regions of National DECA are: a) North Atlantic Region b) Central Region c) Southern Region d) Western Region 4. The official magazine of National DECA is “DECA Direct”. The 2015-2016 Executive Officers for the High School Division are: President North Atlantic Region Vice President Central Region Vice President Southern Region Vice President Western Region Vice President Alec Romero, AZ Tara Nath, PA Ashton Filburn, KY Tyler McBee, TX Marizza Mitchell, CO 5. DECA‘s eight Guiding Principles are organized around the emblem. Four inner points of the DECA Diamond represent the purpose of our comprehensive learning program: a) Integrates into Classroom Instruction b) Applies learning c) Connects to Business d) Promotes Competition . The outer four points of the DECA Diamond address he results of the comprehensive learning program. DECA prepares the next generation to be: • Academically prepared • Community oriented • Professionally responsible • Experienced leaders 6. The Official DECA Emblem is a diamond-shaped design. It embraces the organization’s affinity for the diamond while displaying a bold, modern design. The four points inside the diamond represents the first set of DECA’s guiding principles (see #5) while the four outer points represent the second set of DECA’s guiding principles and the polished leaders DECA prepares (see #5). 7. The official color of DECA is blue, black may be used when blue is unavailable. If on a blue field, the logo may be white. 8. DECA has three primary purposes: a) to assist state/provincial associations in the growth and development of DECA b) to further develop education in marketing and distribution which will contribute to occupational competence c) to promote understanding and appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship in our free, competitive, enterprise system. 9. DECA’s core values and attributes are central to our mission and purpose around the world. a) competence b) innovation c) integrity d) teamwork 10. The National DECA tagline is “Be EPIC”. 11. International and State DECA Month is November 1-30, 2015. 12. DECA was established nationally in 1946 with 17 charter states and the first National DECA conference was held in Memphis, TN, April 1947. 13. The National DECA Center is located in Reston, Virginia. 14. The State Advisor for Texas Collegiate DECA is Kathy Walton, Austin Community College. 15. The Texas Association of DECA is the 2nd largest association of National DECA. 16. There were 346 DECA chapters in Texas during the 2014-2015 school-year with a total membership of 12,696 members. 17. The Texas Association of DECA is divided into eleven districts. 18. Texas is located in the Southern Region of National DECA. 19. The official website of Texas DECA is www.texasdeca.org . 20. The 2015-2016 State DECA Officers are: a. Vice President of Social Media – Sara Stein, The Woodlands High School 21. The Texas DECA Executive Council is made up of the State DECA Officers. 22. The Texas DECA Board of Directors is comprised of one marketing teacher from each of the eleven districts. The Chairperson is Erica Marshall, Samuel Clemens High School;; The Chair-Elect is Stewart Burns, Smithville High School;; the Treasurer is Donna Crow, Pampa High School;; and the Secretary is Araceli Garcia, Eastwood High School. 23. The dues for membership in Texas DECA are $8.00. 24. The dues for membership in National DECA are $8.00. 25. The Alumni Division of DECA permits persons to retain affiliation in a supportive capacity. Dues are $16.00. 26. The various membership divisions of DECA are: a. High School Division b. Collegiate DECA c. Alumni Division d. Professional Division 27. DECA Images is the official supplier of DECA jewelry, blazers, clothing, and membership supplies. 28. DECA Related Materials is the official supplier of published DECA materials that support classroom instruction and chapter management. 29. DECA offers a well-rounded “competitive events program” -- not “contests”. 30. DECA operates in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea and Germany. 31. At the local level, DECA is referred to as a “chapter” -- not a “club”. 32. Persons belonging to a DECA chapter are “members” -- not “DECA students”. 33. National DECA is made up of state and territorial “associations” -- state associations are made up of local chapters. 34. The Texas DECA theme for 2015-2016 is: Moving Forward 39. The 2016 State Career Development Conference will be held February 25-27, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas. 40. The Southern Region Conference (Ultimate Power Trip) is in Austin, Texas, November 20-22, 2015. 41.
