Our recent fundraisers, working bees and student events have been well supported by our local community plus from people within the outer district. A huge thank you must go to those families that turned up for the working bee – where we installed to rain water tanks, filled the native garden with bark chips and repainted the hopscotch and alphabet snake in the assembly area. A huge effort for seven families! On Monday 31st October the township came alive with skeletons, ghosts, witches, vampires and spooks. Congratulations must go to the community members who offered to have the students “trick or treat” at their house. We were completely overwhelmed with the amount of children that attended from St Malachy’s and Frances with their parents. After trick or treating the students danced the evening away with our local musician come DJ, Mrs Ferguson. I think the Apsley school and community may have started something here – all with positive results. Last week I attended a two day Principal conference in Ballarat. This was a great opportunity for me to network with other principals and learn about new educational initiatives. The student’s art work is on display at the Edenhope Art Gallery until Wednesday 16th November. If you get the opportunity pop in and have a look. Late this week each individual student received a letter from the Victor Harbour Probus group thanking the children for their time, dance performances and for showing them around the school. These were personalised and a lovely surprise for the children. Many made comment of the students behaviour and confidence. One bonus of coming to a small school! School Council Meeting is next Tuesday 15th the last one for the year. A finance meeting will be held at 7.30. The students have been busy practising and a list of costumes and props the students will need will be written in each child’s diary, as most of them need to be individualised, except the foundation students who each need: One elf costume with a hat. One reindeer costume with antlers, hooves, nose and a tail. If you could please get the costumes to school as soon as you can it would be greatly appreciated as it makes the organisation process much smoother. Parent Club News On Monday 14th November there will be a parent club meeting at 7pm at school. This will be the last meeting for the year and there will be quite a few things to discuss and tie up before the end of the year. We are also having a trading table in Naracoorte on Thursday 17th November and details need to be sorted out for this. We are asking school families and community members to support this by donating any fresh produce, home cooking (which must be labelled with ingredients), eggs, plants, bunches of flowers, new craft items etc that can be sold on the day. Those parents who indicated that they can help on the day will be popped on a roster and notified after Monday’s meeting. School Concert: The parent club usually hold a working bee leading up to the concert to help prepare props etc and organise the supper and presentations. More details about this will be available soon. Raffle: Every year we run a raffle and once again this year we are asking parents to donate a little something for the “hamper”. These can be sent to school ASAP and placed in the box that will be located at the office. IT’S IN THE BAG 19TH November—3rd December Each year as a school leading up to the Christmas break we look at a charity and try and support it with donations from our families and local community. This year we thought we would support the “Share the Dignity Campaign” that provides personal items to Australian homeless women and women who are in domestic violence shelters. We are hoping that each family might be able to supply a bag with some goodies in it to make a woman feel special at Christmas. This could be a fun family project and makes our children realise how lucky they really are and we are also “filling” someones bucket - a concept we have been trying to teach the children about. If you are unable to fill a complete bag - we are also collecting individual items to fill spare bags that have been donated. There will be a drop off point here at school, plus one at the Apsley Post Office. Look out for the pink collection bin. Some information from the organisation: The "It's in the Bag" Christmas campaign idea came to us when we realised that we seem to manage the needs of children at Christmas, ensuring they're cared for and made to feel special, but the same can't always be said for those women who put the needs of others before their own. We wanted to make them feel special. And so the campaign began - we asked Australians to donate a handbag they no longer used, fill it with items that would make a woman feel special and even pop a thoughtful note into the bag to show her that someone cares and that she matters. What you put in your gift will depend on your bag size, your budget and your imagination. YOUR kind donation is so individual, so very much appreciated and can make a woman feel very special. This is an annual campaign, which in 2016, runs from Saturday 19th November 2016 to Saturday 3rd December. We can then get all the kind donations delivered out to the charities that take care of women in need over the Christmas period and will also allow us enough time to get them to remote areas before Christmas.
