2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spoken Word Contest
November 23– December 11, 2015
THEME: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you
doing for other?”
Spoken Word Contest Rules
1.
Please send an email or hard copy submission of an original piece based on the above theme.
Be sure to email/ mail the attached cover sheet along with your typed Spoken Word
submission. Submissions can be mailed or emailed to Rayven Peterson at
[email protected].
2.
Your piece should be no longer than 2 minutes when spoken aloud.
3.
Deadline for submission is December 11, 2015.
4.
Four candidates from each age group will be chosen to present their piece in front of a panel
of judges on December 17th at the Northside YMCA which is located at 1350 W. North
Avenue.
5.
The top two winners in each age category will be selected based on how well your delivery
captures the theme and the presentation of your piece when spoken aloud. Finalists will be
notified by December 17th.
6.
The top two finalists in each category will record their piece at the Parklawn YMCA on
December 18th. Students should report to 4340 N. 46th Street. The winner will be
determined based on community votes received through the online voting option plus results
from original scoring sheets. The recordings will be displayed through the YMCA website and
Facebook in addition to being displayed on the Jammin’ 98.3 website to allow for public
voting.
7.
The 1st place winner in each age category will be expected to present their winning entry at
the 2016 MLK Breakfast on January 18th.
8.
Winners will receive a plaque and prize in acknowledgement of their 1st place standing.
9.
Winners plus two guests will be invited to attend the 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast
on Monday, January 18, 2016 sponsored by the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee.
10.
