Safe ways to cross
When Max is on the hunt for safe ways to get across the road
he sees these ‘small people’ wearing bright jackets so that the
traffic can see them. He decides this would be a good idea to
copy so that the traffic has a chance of seeing the small
hedgehogs trying to get across the road.
You are going to write a new chapter for the book where Max
is trying out this new idea.
Think about:
• How does Max manage to find a ‘bright jacket’ to wear?
• What problems does he have when he is wearing it?
• Does it help him cross the road safely?
• What happens to Max as he tries to cross the road?

Max stared hard at the small people moving
over the road. From his hiding place in the
bushes he could see clearly what was
happening and he couldn’t believe his eyes.
The small people were walking across the road in safety. What was it
they had on their backs? It was so bright that the roaring monsters
could see them all. So that was the secret. If they could see you then
they would stop. So, Max thought, how can I be seen? Contiinue…
