The artists in this exhibit found beautiful and exciting patterns, or repetition of colors, lines, and shapes, in everyday places. PATTERNS in ARCHITECTURE LOOK & LEARN Buildings, bridges, and other man-made structures have patterns. Find two works of art that show patterns in architecture. DRAW & DISCOVER Record your findings! Discovering ABSTRACT ART Instead of making their art look realistic, many artists use their imaginations, focusing on shapes, lines, and colors and creating abstract art. GEOMETRIC SHAPE Search Many of the abstract works of art in this exhibit have patterns of geometric shapes. See if you can find all the shapes below. Check them off as you find them. Good luck! Can you find a work of art in the exhibit that has geometric shapes that are also concentric? (HINT: It might remind you of the sun!) Record the artist and title below. Artist: ______________________________ Title: ______________________________ __________ In the box on the left, draw your own concentric shapes design with geometric shapes. Using the dots as the center points, make one set of concentric shapes around each. Remember to make sure the center point is in the middle of all of the shapes. If you like, create a pattern with your shapes! IM E N I AG HAT! T Find the artwork shown below and use your imagination! What do the shapes, lines, and colors remind you of? WORDS TO KNOW abstract: A work of art that does not show a real person, place, or thing. Abstract art focuses on formal elements such as color, shape, and line. concentric shapes: Shapes that share a center point, appearing to be “nested” inside one another. geometric shape: A shape that obeys the laws of geometry. Geometric shapes have definitions or rules for their creation (ex: a square has four equal sides at right angles). grid: A pattern of parallel lines that cross one another at right angles or diagonally. pattern: The regular repetition of colors, lines, shapes, or other elements in a work of art. repetition: A way of combining elements of art so that the same elements are used over and over again. rhythm: A visual tempo or beat. The principle of design that refers to a regular repetition of elements of art to produce the look and feel of movement. symmetry: When size, form, and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a plane, line, or point align. There are numerous types of symmetry, including rotation and reflection. 2 Prime Avenue Huntington, NY 11743 631.351.3250 www.heckscher.org Education Department 631.351.3214
