What’s on in Trusham No 62 Jesus/Jacob, lying so peacefully and as in the words of the carol `no crying he makes`. January 2010 YESTERYEAR……. NATIVITY PLAY Thank you to all who participated in this amazing reenactment of the Nativity, which was quite awesome: God surely answered our prayers for a fine night and every aspect of the event was wonderful. The actors, adult and young folk, really entered into the story: the church was filled from the start, for the first scene and by the time we reached the village hall for the centurian`s announcement, the crowd was really entering into the spirit of the occasion with impassioned boos and calls for a willing donkey! And then we turned and saw the Maji approaching from afar, down the hill, and we all drew aside for them to give their gifts and worship the king. It really was a magnificent portrayal of the Christmas story and one which many suggested could only be done in Trusham, with such enthusiasm, participation and good spirit. We then all went back to the Cridford, which now had room for everyone, and were fed and „watered‟ and enjoyed singing of carols, led by Janet on the piano. Thank you, Ian and Tracey. Many congratulations to Pat Smethurst for an inspired script and directing a brilliant cast. And thanks to all who participated in many different ways to make it so moving and memorable. Angela Cameron TRUSHAM CHURCH CHRISTMAS CARDS Thank you to Barry Rowland for producing a wonderful selection and to all who bought them: we raised £166. Pete Gauntlett had come up trumps with suitable lighting, for Gabriel and the angel host to tell the shepherds the good news, as they guarded their Martingrange sheep, warmed by a thankfully smaller fire than that which James had provided for Bonfire Night. The journey of Mary and Joseph to search for a room for the night was followed by some 70 or so Trushamites and friends, in many ways like the bustling crowds who must have been in Bethlehem on that night 2000 or so years ago. The night had grown dark and cold, so much so that snow blizzards greeted us, coming mysteriously from an upstairs window. No room at the inn, but the inn keepers were kindly and offered stable accommodation and we all moved on to a thatched shelter, guided by a magnificent star shining above the building. The scene which greeted us was wonderful - Mary and Joseph and baby CHRISTMAS BAZAAR The evening of the Christmas Bazaar was wet and windy, but those who came along were soon fortified by glasses of mulled wine and mince pies. There were gifts to buy and cakes, preserves and pickles to stock up on for Christmas. Santa made an appearance to give chocolate to all the good children. Thanks to Sue for organising the event, Pete and Tony for cutting the Christmas tree and festooning the lights and to all helpers and stallholders. A profit of £174 will go to village funds. ART & CRAFT WEEKEND This was held at Easternhill Farm, Dunsford, 21st-22nd November. We made a wonderful donation of £415 to Hospiscare. Annie Porter. TRUSHAM ART EXHIBITION There were almost a hundred paintings displayed at the exhibition, held on the cold and wet, last weekend of November. Visitors were treated to free refreshments, as well as the opportunity to vote for their favourite exhibit – this was „Mushrooms 2‟ by Annie Porter. The raffle – prizes donated by members - raised £41. Donations enabled the Art Group to make £25 donations to both CLIC and Shelterbox. Unfortunately, low attendance means that the holding of future exhibitions is in some doubt. Annie Porter. This is a special candlelit service, of peace and meditation - we do hope you will join us in Trusham Church, 31 January, starting at 6pm. Angela Cameron “O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM” Inspired by Graham Mayer`s article on Bethlehem in December`s Unity, Jim and I have decided to give a talk, and show a photographic display, of “BETHLEHEM TODAY”. In our brief visit in May 2009 we visited human rights and peace making organisations and also Bethlehem University and other sites such as the Church of the Nativity. So do come to the Community Centre in Christow on Wednesday, January 20th at 7.30 pm, when we will attempt to put a little realism, and a glimpse at the fortitude of the residents, into the Christmas vision of Bethlehem. We might even manage a small taste of the East by way of refreshment. Penelope Putz. WI We enjoyed our Christmas meal at the Cridford Inn. January‟s meeting will be at Orchardside. THANK YOU 'A huge thank you‟ to all our friends and neighbours who have said prayers, cooked, fetched, babysat and sent good wishes since Keith was taken ill. Your offers of help and support have been fantastic and helped enormously. Sally and Keith Edgington (Comment from fellow editors – Great to see you up and about – and even cleaning the church!) AND NOW FOR 2010.... SERVICE FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY A special service will be held in Trusham Church on Sunday 17th January at 4pm to celebrate Christian Unity. It will be shared by Rev Paul Wimsett and David Hewitt, the newly appointed Baptist Minister for Chudleigh. Do come along and join us in this ecumenical service and for refreshments afterwards. Angela Cameron CANDLEMAS Candlemas is the traditional celebration of the festival of lights, when in years gone by the candles for the forthcoming year were blessed - important before the era of electricity. It was also when Christians celebrate Jesus as `the light of the world` and his presentation as a baby in the temple. FAREWELL After three and a half happy years, we have decided to leave the peace and tranquility of the village and head for the bright lights of Ashburton! We have loved every minute of living in Trusham and would like to thank everyone who offered us their friendship and made us feel so much a part of the lovely community here. We'll take away many happy memories and we will miss you all so much. Helen, Andrew and Cleo WELCOME The new people who have moved into Tucketts are Amanda and Peter Ford, with their three young children. We hope they‟ll be as happy here as the previous occupants were. REMINDERS QUIZ IN THE CRIDFORD Pie and Quiz night starts on Tuesday January 19th (requested by the village of Trusham) £5.95 for Pie and Chips ( or veg and potatoes). Please let Tracey know if you‟re coming, so that she knows how many potatoes to mash. Non-threatening questions are promised. Who knows – you might win! BURNS’ NIGHT Press your kilt pleats, polish your sgian dubhs, puff up your bagpipes ready to fling and reel in the Village rd Hall on January 23 at 7pm. Don‟t forget – we have a dance teacher and caller, to help us calorie-balance the haggis, neaps, tatties and puddings. Have you let Sue (854111) know how many tickets (£7.50; £5 for children) you want and whether you want a free-range or vegetarian haggis? A fun evening, with proceeds going to village funds. AND ANOTHER SCOT or two! Ian Rankin‟s Inspector Rebus will be the focus of this month‟s Book Club – „A Question of Blood‟. The meeting will be at Ann Glendinning‟s house on January 7th at 3pm. BOOKER NOMINATION Tickets will be available this month for the Trusham and Teign Valley Book Group annual Literary Supper on Thursday 4th March 2010 at the Teign Valley Community Hall at 7.30pm. The speaker will be the novelist Philip Hensher, short listed for the Booker Prize in 2008. YEHEE-HA! LINE DANCING Read next month‟s What‟s On to find out more about the possibility of this fun and health-packed activity coming to Trusham. PLEASE, PLEASE If you, or anyone you know, walk dogs in the area, do remember that they should be kept on leads. Yet again, sheep in the area have been attacked and badly injured. The latest incident involved a tall, golden coloured dog with a bright red collar – maybe a Labrador cross/Rhodesian Ridgeback, or similar At least one farmer now intends to carry a gun when checking on their sheep and is legally allowed to use it to prevent dogs worrying livestock. What’s on in Trusham No 63 February 2010 SERVICE FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY A good number of Trushamites were delighted to be joined by many visitors from Chudleigh and Chudleigh Knighton to share in the service on 17th January to mark the week of Christian Unity. It was a lively and joyful service with David Hewitt, new Chudleigh Baptist minister, sharing the service with Paul Wimsett. It was an inspiration to those present to feel part of the greater Christian family and share this fellowship together. We also heard from Jane Brooks, how her son Dave, now solo-rowing the Atlantic was making such great progress and how God was so much part of this adventure. We all enjoyed tea and cake in the church after the service - and no doubt the church mice were delighted with the leftovers. BETHLEHEM TODAY At our Evening Worship service on 14th February 6pm we will be having a talk and exhibition about modern-day Bethlehem. Jim and Penelope Putz of Trusham will describe their visit to Bethlehem and the interfaith human rights organisations they met in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in May 2009. There will be refreshments after the service. SONGS OF PRAISE IN TRUSHAM CHURCH Now is your chance to sing your favourite hymn or worship song and join in with others as we sing theirs too. At 4pm on Sunday 21st February, we are having our own version of SONGS OF PRAISE, so please let David Smethurst or Angela Cameron know which hymn you would like to sing, and if you are willing to say why you chose it, that would be super too, but you don`t have to! CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL The Church Electoral Roll is being revised in time for the Church‟s Annual Meeting in the Spring. If you are not already on the Roll and would like to be included, please see Angela or David [Churchwardens] for a registration form. VILLAGE COMMITTEE MEETING Paul Penfold from Tinkley came to the Parish Meeting to outline his planning application for fishing lodges. It is hoped to have an open site visit in the Spring, so that villagers can see for themselves the work he has done at the quarry, and what he hopes to achieve. It is proposed that with the £250 Trusham was awarded for recycling Yellow Pages covers, that we buy one large tree, possibly a Red Oak and site this near the War Memorial. The play equipment sub-committee reported that the project is now finalised and there will be an official "opening" during half-term in February. A vote of thanks was recorded for the hard work carried out by this sub-committee. The Village Hall committee heard that work is still waiting to be undertaken to repair toilet windows and timber roof beams, as well as installing a safety light. There had been a successful Christmas bazaar which raised £170 for village funds, and the carol singing around the village had raised £151.07 for Mercy Ships. Dates were agreed for the village quiz -February 26th, village Revels - 13th March, village AGM - 21st April and a fete and barn dance -3rd July. A full set of the draft minutes can be found on the noticeboard and on the Trusham website. Sue Gauntlett BURNS NIGHT Another great evening, thanks to Sue‟s enterprise and organisation. Traditions were followed – pipes were sort of skirled and one or two kilts were whirled. Lots of tartan was in evidence ranging from kilts (the real McCoy), to pyjamas and hair! Sandy did the Scots bit. The neeps and tatties were almost as tasty as the haggis. The puddings were heavenly. Goodness knows how anyone was able to dance after all that, but the caller, Liz Hogg, assisted all the left feet to become nimble pairs. Many thanks - mainly to Sue, but also to her pudding makers et al. Stop press – Update from Sue: We made a profit on the Burns Supper evening of £259.80 for village funds, so well worth doing. The raffle played a large part with £77 of tickets sold. CHRISTMAS CHARITY Many thanks to all who contributed to Present Aid. There is still a little more money to collect but as soon as I have received it all I will check what we are able to purchase from the village. Further details will be in next month‟s What‟s On. Once again thanks for your support. Mary Cook BOOKER NOMINATION Tickets for the Trusham and Teign Valley Book Group annual Literary Supper are selling fast. This will be held on Thursday 4th March 2010 at the Teign Valley Community Hall at 7.30pm. The speaker will be novelist Philip Hensher, short listed for the 2008Booker Prize. SOUP AND ROLL LUNCH Last year we had fundraising `Soup and Roll` lunches at various houses and it was such fun we have decided to do it again. This time we aim to raise funds to cover our church's contribution to the Teign Valley Youth Project. The first lunch will have been held at Vinnicombes in January. February's lunch will be on Tuesday 23rd February at 12.30pm, at Lower Vinnicombes . Not so much Mastermind as the Weakest Link without the Wicked Witch! enjoyed a Dartmoor walk and visited a local dairy farm. The group visited Bovey Tracey Fire Station and assisted DNP restoring a section of footpath. They learned a wide range of Scouting skills -knots, tracking, pioneering, orienteering and first aid. We attended the St George‟s Day parade in Moretonhampstead and paraded through Bridford to the Remembrance Day service in November. This year we plan to develop the skills they have already learned as well going camping. TRUSHAM REVELS 2010! We are hoping to organise another “Revels” this year. For those of you who weren‟t here for the last one in Spring 2007, this is a „variety‟ show held in the Village Hall comprising of various sketches/performances lasting five minutes or so, performed by villagers of all ages! Past Revels have been great fun, as well as raising money for various charities! It will take place on Saturday March 13th (Sunday 14th is Mothers‟ Day!) We are grateful for the huge support from Bridford Village Hall where we meet weekly in term time: Scouts 7-9pm Wednesdays, Beavers 5.15-6.30pm and Cubs 6.30-8pm Thursdays. We are also very grateful for grants from Bridford Wives, Bridford Fete and Teign Valley Vintage Rally and support from the wider local community. We are applying for major grants to equip ourselves with camp equipment etc to enhance our programme and benefit our members. We have a very capable and dedicated team of leaders but need more leaders to assist at our meetings. This would reduce pressure on our present team and allow us to widen our programme and to accept more young people into Scouting. No experience is necessary and full training is available. Our committee of parents and helpers has been very busy in supporting our group but is looking for a new treasurer. This should be a very simple post for someone with basic computer skills and does not involve working with children. We welcome applications from young people to join the group. For any further Audrey Compton of Deer Park Farm, Trusham has kindly details pleased contact John Lund, Group Scout leader offered to help younger children create their own on 01647 252485 or email [email protected] puppet theatre and put on a show in the Revels! It is already being put to good use by the children and adults! We would like to celebrate the park‟s opening and thank our sponsors; Ugbooke Environmental Ltd, Rural Aid Fund, The RockETTS Fund, Devon County Council, The Football Foundation and last but not least YOU the people of Trusham who have supported us. To do this we are holding an event in the park on the afternoon of Tuesday 16th February (Pancake day). We will start off with a celebratory banner and flag making workshop for the kids run by TEPEE (Teignbridge Play Network-they did the scarecrow making too…great fun!) at 1.30 pm. At 3.30pm we will have the official opening with refreshments-(including Tony Cox‟s fabulous pancakes to eat we hope!) photos and some pancake racing. If the weather is awful we will head for the village hall. I look forward to reading it every month – your hard work is much appreciated! It has really added to village life! Thank you also to the Causley Trustees for allowing funding, and also to all those who volunteer to go out in all weathers to deliver it around the village! anon DON’T EMBARRASS YOUR DOG! If you or acquaintances walk your canine friends around and about Trusham, please don‟t leave any evidence! Responsible dog-owners – which most of you are – not only collect forensic evidence in handy little bags and also take it home with them. There are some, however, who presume that leaving the filled handy little bags on paths – especially those leading from Church Lane – means „duty done‟. What’s on in Trusham No 64 March 2010 PCC MEETING HELD ON 22 FEB Nine members attended the meeting chaired by Paul Wimsett our vicar. Arrangements for the Easter Egg workshop were discussed. Recent services had been well attended, especially the Nativity service and the Nine Lessons and Carols. Following Dave Brooks‟s service, church members have had updates on progress on his solo transatlantic rowing race. The map in church is updated regularly. Dave is prayed for each week. The candle snuffer had been found. Start time of services was discussed. It was decided that when BST ends, morning services will start at 10am for winter months. The earlier start enabled us to have Paul lead more services, which was appreciated by the congregation Chris presented the 2009draft accounts, confirming that income is still only half expenditure and that if this current situation continues all reserves will be used by the end of 2011. The Annual Church Meeting will be on Thursday 15th April at 8pm in the Village Hall. It will be preceded by a meal at 7pm. There will be a presentation about church activities over the last year and there will be an opportunity to contribute to the next Action Plan. CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL The Church Electoral Roll is being revised in time for the Church‟s Annual Meeting in the Spring. If you are not already on the Roll and would like to be included, please see Angela or David [Churchwardens] for a registration form. CHRISTMAS PAST A very big thank you to all who chose to make donations to Present Aid rather than sending Christmas cards to friends in Trusham. I am pleased to say that we collected £81. This has enabled us to purchase 16 ducks to help people in Bangladesh become self sufficient as well as 3 pigs, a beehive and 7 beekeepers‟ hats to help people in Bolivia. This is a fantastic achievement and I have already had requests to repeat the appeal next year. So why not? Thank you all once again. Mary Cook SOUP AND ROLL LUNCH This month‟s soup lunch will be on March 23rd, at 12.30, at Middle Earth. Donations of £3 in aid of Trusham Church‟s contribution to the Teign Valley Youth Project. Please let Pat know if you are coming EASTER EGG WORKSHOP This will be run by TEPEE {Teignbridge Play Network on Saturday 27th March, 2-4pm in the Village Hall. It will be another opportunity to take part in a workshop run by the people who did our Scarecrow Workshop in the Autumn. Children and adults are all welcome to come and try the blowing and decorating of real eggs, and the making of Modroc eggs [Plaster of Paris bandages wrapped round balloons and then decorated – very messy and great fun!]. All will be used to decorate the church for Easter and then returned to creators. Thanks to the Causley Fund Trustees this will be a free workshop. As numbers are limited to 40, please could you let Pat Smethurst know if you would like to come [tel: 853375] Churchwardens‟ note: The use of Modroc „eggs‟ will definitely not be permitted for the egg rolling contest after the Easter Day service!! TRUSHAM PLAY AREA OFFICIAL OPENING! On Tuesday 16th of February Trusham celebrated the arrival of new play equipment and seating in the park! We were pleased to be joined by representatives of some of the organisations who donated funds, (which included Ugbrooke Environmental, The Rural Aid Fund, RockETTS, The Football Foundation and Devon County Council) as well as Mike Gardner who made the beautiful wooden tractor and seating, and of course lots of local adults and children and their relatives and friends! The afternoon commenced with celebratory banner and flag making organised by TEPEE (Teignbridge Play Network). Everyone had great fun and a beautiful selection of rather sticky glittery banners arrived down at the playpark for the official opening! Our photos were taken for the Mid Devon Advertiser then Jim Putz officially “opened” the play area. Flowers and wine were presented to Tricia Bird and Tony Wheaton who both put considerable time and effort to getting into this project. The rain had just about held off until this point, but soon it began to pour which meant rather a large crowd of people retreated to the shelter of 2 gazebos where we had tea, cake, and of course Tony and Rosemary‟s “Posh Pancakes” which were a huge hit! Big thanks go to them! The afternoon ended with a damp and slippery but enthusiastic pancake race won by Tom Edgington. Thankyou so much to all who contributed to making this project work- the sponsors mentioned above, and for all the children and adults who fund raised locally - a special mention to the Cridford Inn who held several fundraising events. A big thankyou to all those who gave practical help getting the site ready and those who put numerous hours into researching the project, meetings, paperwork, number crunching and more meetings! It‟s all been worth it! Sarah Maybin TRUSHAM REVELS Sadly Pat and I have had to make the decision to defer the Revels from March 13th to a later date - we hope in November. This has been for a number of reasons but mainly that the date seemed to prove difficult for many. Thank you so much to those of you who did contact us with offers of support and sorry to cause any disappointment. S.M. WE DANCED THE LINE Stetsons and spurs were left at the door, as a number of Trusham cowgirls – and a couple of intrepid cowboys - joined Wild Westerners to have a go at line-dancing. This proved exhausting for both mind and body – what with identifying left and right (essential as those of us who ended up frequently facing the wrong way will testify) and keeping up with the music which went faster and faster, so that „heeltoe-stamp-stamp‟ turned into „shuffle thump‟. Then came the memory test – repeating sequences learned an hour earlier – maybe soon we‟ll be able to do joinedup dancing? Watch out for the next session – it was great fun. „Calamity J‟ Rowland ASHTON & TRUSHAM WI We had a wonderful dinner at Ann Glendinning‟s home – cooked by Ann and Liz, with exquisite heart-shaped pastries made by Lesley, served on a table beautifully decorated by Ann Davies. There were several new members there too, which enhanced the evening. Next month, on March 8th, we shall meet at the Village Hall and hear about Easter hats and fascinators. The area of each parcel, the owner and occupier if different are all listed in the Tithe Apportionment records as well as the use that was made of the land. The village recreation area, for instance, was an orchard which belonged to Tucketts. If you are not already on the Roll and would like to be included, please see Angela or David [Churchwardens] for a registration form. ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING Thursday 15th April 8pm All villagers are invited to the meeting. There will be a review of the year’s church activities, a presentation of the accounts and an opportunity to contribute ideas for the next Action Plan. This is YOUR church, so please try to come along and take part. We look forward to seeing lots of Trushamites! If you would like to come to a supper beforehand [7pm], please get a ticket from Angela [853298] or Pat [853375]. The cost is £6 for a two course meal of lasagne, garlic bread, green salad followed by Pavlova. If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know. Please bring your own wine/ drink. EASTER IN TRUSHAM We will celebrate the resurrection of Christ at our special service on 4 th April, Easter Day Holy Communion. Decorating the church for Easter will take place on Saturday 3rd April if you would like to help with this, please contact Angela Cameron. All who can, please come and help – with flowers, foliage and your arranging skills. – will be gratefully received. The Easter Day service, though a Holy Communion service, will be very much with young people in mind. Do please come, whatever your age!! This will be accompanied with the handing out of Easter eggs to the children in church and the display and presentation of the egg creations produced at the Teepee Easter Egg event on 27th March. After the service we will have the age-old Trusham tradition of egg rolling outside the church. The egg represents new life, the New Life which Christians believe Jesus gives us in sacrificing himself for our sins on Good Friday and rising to new life on Easter Day. For those who are not familiar with the egg-rolling event, you bring along your decorated hardboiled egg and with all the others (children’s section or adults’) you roll your egg down the hill from outside the Village Hall gate. The one that travels the furthest, without breaking up, wins a prize. Come along – take part and/or spectate -it’s fun! NB no shell-hardening or other adulteration allowed! SOUP AND ROLL LUNCH Many thanks to all those who came to Middle Earth for Soup and Chatter at lunchtime on 23rd March. £44 was raised for Trusham's contribution to the Teign Valley Youth Project. The next Soup Lunch will be hosted by Mary Cook at Franciscott, at 12.30pm, on Tuesday 27th April. It would be helpful if you could let Mary know if you are coming. VILLAGE AGM The Village AGM will be held on Wednesday 21st April 2010 in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Parish meeting: At the March Parish Meeting it was reported that a charity would have to be formed for the recreation area to be transferred to the village from TDC, and application would be made to the Charity Commissioners. The public footpaths had been used by horses and it was hoped this would stop as they are not designated bridle ways. There had been a celebration for the opening of the new play equipment, and a safety inspection on behalf of ROSPA carried out - the safety requirements recommended were in hand. Village Hall Committee: The Village Hall committee meeting heard that work would be undertaken shortly for the installation of the safety light and step painting. As there were no suitable ways to clean the ceiling tiles, quotation and grants being sought for replacement (cleanable) tiles. A Food Hygiene and Safety inspection had been carried out by TDC and the points raised were in hand. A working party to discuss new Boules pitch to meet on site and any interested parties were welcome to attend. A full set of the draft Minutes can be found on the village notice board and website. CONGRATULATIONS! Thirty years of wedded bliss Started with a loving kiss When Angela was just a girl And Sandy chose her as his pearl For she fitted his doctor’s orders. Though they’ve crossed so many borders, They soon put Trusham to the test And Vinnicombes became their much-loved nest For fledgling Charlotte and bonsai trees – With village life, they were at ease Though working hard at Church and history And much else – it’s quite a mystery How they had thirty hours a day For all this work and rest and play! While this overview is somewhat cursory, We wish you a wonderful anniversary. ASHTON & TRUSHAM WI Hats and fascinators were the subject of the informative talk at last month’s meeting. Barry Rowland RECIPE OF THE MONTH Lemon cake with double lemon filling Ingredients:225g butter/margarine or mix; 225g caster sugar; 275g self-raising flour; 4 large eggs; grated zest 11/2 lemons; pinch of salt; 50g ground almonds. Filling: 150g unsalted butter; 275g icing sugar; 1 lemon – grated zest and juice; 2 tablespoons of lemon curd. Method: Line the base/sides of a 20cm deep cake tin. Heat the oven to 160oC/325oF/gas mark 3. Cream the fats and sugar until light and fluffy, add grated lemon zest, then beat in the eggs a little at a time. Fold in the sieved flour and salt, then the ground almonds. It should be a dropping consistency. Place the mixture in the tin, making a slight hollow in the centre. Bake just below the centre of the oven for 11/4 hrs or until firm and golden brown. Leave in the tin for 1 minute, then turn out. When cold, store in airtight container for a day, then coat with marzipan. Filling: soften the butter; beat in the icing sugar, grated lemon zest and 2 to 3 teaspoons of the juice. Level the top of the cake, invert it so that the base is now the top and cut it across in half. Spread with lemon curd and 2/3 of the butter icing. Sandwich the two halves together and spread remaining butter icing thinly over the sides and top as a base for the marzipan. The cake plus filling is 6cm deep before it is coated. VILLAGE DIARY What’s on in Trusham No 66 May 2010 TRUSHAM APCM 2010 VICAR’S REPORT I would like to express my thanks to all who have contributed to our life together over the past year, particularly to David and Angela our Churchwardens, Pat our Secretary, and Rosemary and Chris for help with Church finances. We are truly grateful to you all. Also, a special thank you to all who have done duty wardens’ tasks during the year. Your help in sharing the load of keeping Sunday by Sunday worship going is very much appreciated. Thanks to everyone for all you do in many different ways from arranging flowers to reaching out to neighbours. So much of what a church is and does that enriches individuals and communities depends on work generously given and often seen by nobody, but God. Most of all, we do what we do for him. There have been some wonderful highlights in church life over the last year. The Christmas nativity through the streets was so powerful and moving. Even now I think back to the different scenes and the inspiration of each one. Thank you so much to Pat and all who worked so hard on that and made Christmas so special. The Harvest scarecrow making, service and procession were also very memorable. We are very grateful to Tracey and Ian at the Cridford for their support of these occasions. There are challenges ahead to ensure that the Good News of Jesus Christ and his kingdom are a real and visible part of life in communities such as Trusham. The last year has shown that with commitment and imagination great things can result, and as ever we are grateful for your suggestions which are an important part of taking the mission of our church forward. I look forward to working with you in the service of God’s kingdom in the forthcoming year. Paul REPORT OF TRUSHAM CHURCH AGM Trusham Church Council held its Annual General Meeting on 15th April in the Village Hall, preceded by a fellowship meal. Angela Cameron and David Smethurst were elected to serve as Church Wardens for the year 2010/11. They were thanked by Rev Paul Wimsett for their willingness to stand and for the hard work they had done in the previous year. He said that the role of Churchwarden was a key role in co-ordinating the work of the church and reminded Church members that the life and work of the Church is a team effort and that the Churchwardens need the help and support of all. Paul said he looked forward to receiving from those present their suggestions that evening which would be an important part of taking the mission of our church forward. Pat Smethurst gave the annual report in a PowerPoint presentation with photographs of parish life, a very lively and enjoyable review which inspired and encouraged us in all that had happened over the year. Church members were invited to discuss what they would like the church to consider when planning for development in the Mission Action Plan 2010. These are in addition to the Joint Mission Action Plan agreed by churchwardens in the three parishes in the Mission Community. These included: Worship: To continue the focus on major festivals to encourage wider participation from villagers; To continue to hold joint services with the other two churches in the Mission Community; To have occasional question/answer talks [with previously notified questions] as an alternative to the sermon To have a pet service To use puppets in AAW services To hold another Songs of Praise Spiritual development To continue the monthly prayer group; To have a prayer box in the village; To hold workshop for leaders of intercessions; To hold another course for spiritual development with the use of DVDs; To hold a quiet day. Service to others To consider Stewardship campaign so that people have an opportunity to offer gifts of time, talents, regular financial support; To continue the successful soup lunches or cream teas [money used for a specific expense]; To develop further outreach to villagers [the elderly, new parents etc]; To hold community coffee mornings/ breakfast and to consider starting these with prayer To organise, with younger villagers, the making of a Time Capsule - to be buried in the village green. Fund raising To add favours to the auction after the Harvest Festival To sell general cards throughout the year Election of the Parochial Church Council The following members were elected: Mrs Jane Brooks, Mrs Rosemary Cox, Mr Chris Edworthy, Mr Pete Gauntlett, Mrs Diana Northcott, Mr Brian Shearman, Mrs Pat Smethurst, Mrs Margaret Stack. David Smethurst thanked Paul Wimsett for his leadership of our parish. He also thanked other villagers and PCC members for their contributions to the life of the church in Trusham. TRUSHAM PARISH AGM This was held on 21st April and the chairman welcomed the 28 villagers who attended. The Meeting heard that the planning application for holiday/student accommodation at Tinkley had been withdrawn as TDC had refused permission due to access from the Teign Valley Road. Jim Putz was in discussion with the Planning Dept. on behalf of Mr Penfold about their ruling. It was reported that in order for Trusham to purchase the recreation area from TDC, a further committee would have to be set up with charity status, as Parish Meetings are unable to own property. This was still being investigated with the Charity Commission. The accounts of the Parish Meeting and the Community Fund were accepted and balance sheets were freely available at the meeting. The election of officers and committee were as follows: Jim Putz (Chairman), David Davies (Treasurer), Sue Gauntlett (Secretary); Jane Brooks, Keith Edgington, Patsy Mudie, Judith Rowland, James Smethurst, Tony Wheaton, James Cassidy, Tricia Bird, Sarah Maybin and Ann Glendinning were all elected. A vote of thanks was passed to Angela Cameron who had stood down from the committee. A discussion was held on the road signs in the village square. It was thought these had proved ineffective and in fact traffic was faster than before. The committee will ask Devon Highways Dept. to remove the signs. It was mooted that a Boules pitch be made in the recreation area at the top of the park and games would be trialled this summer before a permanent pitch installed. The Village Hall AGM followed. A new electricity supplier was being used which would hopefully reduce costs. Thought would be given to user fees for the hall as costs outweighed the income. A full set of draft minutes can be found on the village notice-board and website. ASHTON & TRUSHAM WI On April 12th, our speaker was Dru Butterfield who told us about the work of Dartmoor Pony Trust: how they’re trying to keep the true strain of Dartmoor pony, while keeping their number at a realistic level – enough to keep the moor in good condition, but ensuring they are not overstocked. The Trust also does a great deal of charitable work, including encouraging disabled children to visit their working farm, to have contact with the ponies. They also organise walks around the area – another walk for Trusham. It was an interesting evening. Liz Jackson HAT PICTURE VILLAGERS’ NEWS PHILIP LENTERN was confirmed at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Newton Abbot, on Sunday 18th April by Father Patrick Costello, who was specially commissioned by the Bishop. I last heard they had completed a 21 mile training run in fine style. Annie Pascoe, Helen Rossi, Angela Thompson and Davey Jones are all running for various charities so please be sure to support them. It’s really lovely to be out and about now that spring is really here, getting in the fresh air and getting fit at the same time. Do look at our website diary for where the weekly runs are. What’s on in Trusham No 67 June 2010 THANK YOU Joan Hearn and family would like to thank all neighbours and friends who attended Keith‟s funeral and generously donated to Macmillan Nurses ROGATION WALK Trusham`s annual Rogation walk has become a popular and special event - this year was no exception, when we were joined by 40 walkers from the village and our sister churches of Chudleigh and Chudleigh Knighton. Although the day had started with a heavy downpour, we were blessed with dry weather on the walk which took us out past the War Memorial, and down to Whetcombe, ending up at Tinkley Koi Farm, pausing at various beautiful places on the way for Paul Wimsett to read to us a Bible passage relating to the area and to pray for God`s blessings of the countryside and rural production. Our tour of Tinkley was fascinating, as we took in the wide variety of beautiful wild fowl - Golden, Lady Amhurst and Reeve`s pheasants, irridescent blue and pure white peacocks, Australian black and Asian black necked swans now nesting on the floating rafts, Egyptian geese, and fancy ducks - not to mention the many large fish in the lake - how could we fail to marvel at God`s infinite beauty and variety of creation in all we saw? Paul Penfold Of Tinkley and Steve who assists him, gave us a warm welcome and interesting insights into their work there. The visit ended with a trek up to the viewing platform where we could look down on the lake. After such an wonderful outing, we were treated to an delicious tea back in the church, the table laden with home-made cakes, rewarding our afternoon`s exertion, a thoroughly enjoyable occasion. Many thanks to Paul and Steve, to Brian and Sally Collins and John and Carol Siddorn on whose land we walked, to the talented cake makers and to Paul Wimsett for his inspired leadership. Angela Cameron CHRISTIAN AID Thank you to all in Trusham who contributed to the Christian Aid collection in May - which raised £63.54 towards ending poverty. If your envelope was not collected and you would like to give, please drop it in to Angela Cameron or ring her and she will call for it. HANDICRAFTS It is proposed to start a self-help knitting and sewing group with a view to making our own clothes and presents. We plan to meet once a month in each other‟s houses. The first meeting will be on Friday, 25th June at 2 p.m. at Doreen's house. If you are interested please contact Doreen on 852692 or Liz Jackson on 854259. Doreen Kelley TRUSHAM AND TEIGN VALLEY BOOK GROUP At our last meeting we discussed „The Secret Agent‟ by Joseph Conrad. The novel, set at the beginning of the twentieth century, tells the story of a group of anarchist, and their interactions with the London Society in which they live. It would be wrong to spoil the suspense generated by Conrad in this atmospheric novel which resonates with our modern experience of terrorism. Our next meeting is on 10th June 2010 at 3pm at Old Venn Bridford when we will be discussing Booker Prize winner „Wolf Hall‟ by Hilary Mantel. If anyone is interested in joining this lively group please ring Margaret 01647 252611. Margaret Taylor TEIGN VALLEY RUNNING CLUB Our marathon runners in London all completed in under 5 hours – what an achievement with so many people running. Results as follows – Helen Rossi in 4.08.48; Davey Jones in 4.28.39; Annie Pascoe in 4.42.49; Angela Thompson in 4.58.00. Not to be outdone, our youngest member, Tom VickersArmstrong ran the Great West half marathon on 2nd May, completing in 1.52.12 Well done all of you. On Mondays, throughout the summer whilst it is light evenings, there will be short beginner type jog/runs starting at 7pm mostly in and around the reservoirs, and mostly off road. These 7pm runs (time may be altered) are very suitable for complete beginners, those coming back from injury, easy run after a Sunday long run – generally a chance to start or keep the legs going in a very gentle way. They will be from 2 – 4 miles long approx. Everyone welcome, men too and do bring along or tell anyone you may know who has expressed an interest in getting going with a little jogging, that this is the ideal start. By the way, we jog, or run regardless of the weather – it‟s rather nice to run in the rain, especially the warm summer variety. Sure we will be having a deluge soon, but also hope to have sunny evenings too. All our runs are listed in the diary, on our website. www.teignvalleyrunningclub.co.uk Penny Clapham – Coach – 01647 253066 VILLAGE FETE The village will be holding a fete on Saturday 3rd July. You can now follow us on Twitter @vanillacridford COULD YOU SAVE MONEY ON FUEL OR ELECTRICITY? Have you noticed how many motorists on the Valley road repeatedly rely on their brakes rather than slowing down before a bend? Driving experts claim we can get 60% better consumption by driving more smoothly, correctly anticipating road conditions and changing gear appropriately. Check your tyre pressure regularly, avoid over-revving and you‟ll be filling your tank less often. You‟ll produce fewer emissions too. Would you like to join a project looking at the effectiveness of “smart” electricity meters in reducing your energy bills? The Plans can be seen on the church noticeboard. The following services and events were planned in addition to regular services in church: Songs of praise service in church on 8th August at 6pm An outdoor family service on 12th September at 10.30am on the Village Green Harvest Festival on 26th September at 4pm followed by an auction of produce and promises. There will be another Harvest family workshop on Saturday 25th September for Trusham residents. Causley Trustees kindly agreed to fund this. Service of Remembrance for people who have died - 17th Oct at 4pm. To be followed by tea. Trusham Nativity Play PCC members expressed continuing concern about the financial situation of the church with its expenditure on essential matters being £10,000 a year against an income of £5,000. All villagers on the Church‟s Electoral Roll have been, or will be approached to consider regular giving to the church. At present the church is using its reserves to keep going. These will run out at the end of 2011. Pete Gauntlett is to lead fundraising initiatives on behalf of the PCC. Starting in September on the last Friday on the month, there will be a Church children‟s group from 5.30 to 6.15 leading into the Friday Club on the Green. There will be a Bible story followed by art/drama/ music activity. It is planned that this will link with the monthly family service. Trusham children aged between 7 and 11 [Yrs 3 – 6 in Primary School] will be very welcome to come along. Contact Pat Smethurst [853375] if your child[ren] are interested. More details in September‟s newsletter. The next PCC (Parochial Church Council) meeting will be held on 18th October. TRUSHAM VILLAGE COMMITTEE The last Parish Meeting heard that a Red Oak had been planted near the War Memorial with the money we were granted from the collection of Yellow Pages covers. It was reported that the "give way" signs in the village square would be removed by DCC Highways Department as they had proved ineffective in calming traffic and many villagers had complained about them. Quotations were awaited for restoration of the War Memorial before funding can be requested. The Village Hall committee reported that the safety light in the hall grounds would be installed in June, and the hall electrical installation needed to be tested, the electrical appliances having been tested in 2009. The matter of hall renting charges was discussed but for now charges will remain the same, but will be kept under review. A full copy of the Minutes can be found on the Village Noticeboard and on the Trusham website. ASHTON & TRUSHAM WI June‟s meeting, on the 14th, saw fourteen members leave Trusham in a convoy of cars to visit the Sharpham Vineyard. The weather was just right for us to tackle the Red Route, with its rather high stiles and a lovely view of the majestic Palladian Sharpham House – a delicate rose- like one of the wines we tasted. As befits WI members, the „bowl‟ for the samples we shouldn‟t have swallowed, remained in pristine condition, while we talked knowledgeably about „legs, noses and tears‟. The day finished with a visit to Hill House Nursery and cream teas – it was rumoured that some people managed a whole serving rather than the more popular „half‟ version! Thanks must go to Ann Glendinning for organising it all – including a recce – and to the drivers too. July‟s meeting, the 12th at 7.15pm- will be held in The Village Hall where there will be a talk about the Cinnamon Trust. BLUEBELL WALKS Annie Porter would like people to know – especially those who enjoyed the walks that over £6411 was raised for Hospiscare – an amazing sum -thank you. PENELOPE AND JAMES When the Nineteen Thirties opened play Two little Quakers saw light of day Almost twins – but not quite – Apart by a hundred days and night And geography too – so many miles Separated their childhood smiles. Let’s skip the Thirties and Forties too – And on to Varsity – Dark Blue – Where paths crossed – almost a mystery One a chemist - t’other read history. A life on the tiles for ‘Lucky Jim’Penny had no time to envy himNor in peaceful Trusham to lurkFar too busy with her social work. Children came, two girls, one boy – Bringing laughter, love and joy. It‟s in the Village Green, on July 3rd, starting at 2.30pm – lots to see and do. Daj is in need of cans/bottles/packets of food for his tombola stall – if you‟re lucky, you might even win back what you gave! Later, starting at 7.30pm, there will be dancing to live music from Hogwash, barbecue and beer - £6 (adult), £3 (children/students), under 5s-free TRUSHAM AND TEIGN VALLEY BOOK GROUP At the last meeting, we discussed „Wolf Hall‟, the Man Booker winner by Hilary Mantel. Most agreed that it gave a very vivid picture of both Tudor life and Thomas Cromwell. Next month‟s book is Remarkable Creatures by Tracey Chevalier – a novel based on Mary Anning and the fossils she found in Lyme Regis. It will be on 29th July at the Woodland Park in Bridford, at 5.30pm. We could have supper at the pub afterwards, if anyone is interested. To celebrate the club‟s 10th Anniversary there will be a special literary supper on Friday 1st October in Trusham Village Hall starting at 7:30. The guest speaker is Trusham born author Tim Pears, the author of six novels: In the Place of Fallen Leaves (which won the Hawthornden Prize and the Ruth Hadden Memorial Award), In a Land of Plenty, A Revolution of the Sun, Wake Up, Blenheim Orchard and Landed. BOULES An opening game was held on June 3rd – just four select villagers tried their skills – only one sent a boule down the hill. The next day, several more – including children – had a go. It‟s a lovely setting, with an unpredictable surface. Don‟t forget – you don‟t have to book – have a go! LINE DANCING Some regular participants must be getting very good, but it‟s the sort of thing anyone – whatever their talent for identifying left and right – can try their foot at. The next one will in the Village Hall on July 14th - £3 a head. A BIG THANK YOU Pete , Daj, Tony and Barry attacked the Village Hall grounds, removing a vast amount of ivy from the walls. They were sustained by Sue‟s brews and Patsy‟s scrumptious sponge. Mary also assisted – not sure about Hugo! Fish and chip takeaway 30th July HOSPISCARE & A SPONSORED BIKE RIDE I have signed up for a 200K sponsored bike ride from Exeter cathedral to Truro cathedral over 2 days, 20th and 21st August in aid of Hospiscare, our local hospice at Exeter. This hospice covers our area, and as a volunteer there, I know how much really good work they do for their patients and their families. The Hospice would not be able to function without much fund-raising as they receive very little money from the government – hence “on your bike”. I would be delighted if you would care to sponsor me. I have left appropriate forms in the valley post offices - or come and see me at home at Penton Chapel, Christow; phone 01647-253066 to make a pledge;email on [email protected] Penny Clapham. ROADS Angela Cameron chased TDC and Highways to get some answers to the traffic lights on the Valley road. The landowner needs to stabilise the bank. She also asked about potholes – especially in Church Lane. According to their answer, they should now have been repaired! PARKING Church Lane again. There is the perennial issue regarding thoughtless parking on the junction at the bottom. Not only could access by emergency vehicles be prevented, it also makes it dangerous for people pulling out. If you know anyone who parks on the junction, please explain the situation to them. Now to the top of the lane – vehicles parked for a length of time have prevented access by delivery vehicles. What with its potholes and increased use, everyone needs to use a bit of thought. Judith Rowland Peter Gauntlett DEVON HISTORIC CHURCHES DAY On Saturday 11th September, visit as many churches as you can, by foot / wheel / hoof. You could raise money for Trusham’s Church by walking or riding to as many churches as you can and being sponsored for your efforts. Proceeds will be shared equally between the village church and the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Many of the churches visited will have refreshments available - and you all know how yummy these tend to be. Entrants are asked to find sponsors who will pay for every church or chapel visited, or indeed, per mile covered. For further details, please check their website www.devonhistoricchurches.co.uk. If you would like sponsorship forms, or if you are able to help with refreshments / make a cake, please contact Jane Brooks 01626 852992 TRUSHAM AND TEIGN VALLEY BOOK GROUP Reminder: To celebrate the club’s 10th Anniversary there will be a literary supper on Friday 1stOctober in the Village Hall. The speaker is Trusham born author Tim Pears, the author of six novels: In the Place of Fallen Leaves, In a Land of Plenty, A Revolution of the Sun, Wake Up, Blenheim Orchard and Landed. TRUSHAM’S FETE and DANCE Well – what an amazing success – not only great fun, with fine weather, but with the added bonus of the amazing amount of money raised – a profit of £603.55 on the fete and £793.75 on the dance. The stalls were the usual mix – skittles, welcome cream teas, scrumptious cakes (suppliers to Teign Valley Cricket Club for their Sunday tea), recycled bric-a-brac, plants of all sorts as well as paintings and woodcraft. The goats were almost as entertaining as the space hopper races. Hogwash were (was?), again, excellent, while those who were patient did get to enjoy their burgers. CHOCKS AWAY! (1) I want to say a big “Thank You” to all of you who contributed to my Red Letter Day “Experience” and to let you all know that I’ve Had It !! I chose a helicopter ride over London, hence the delay ( my 60th was last September) as I wanted a good chance of summer weather. It was well worth the wait, the weather at the end of June was fantastic, and not only did I have a great flight, from Redhill, but also a lovely meandering drive (no, we didn’t get lost!) through the South Downs. Thank you again. Pat Phipps Here are some sights you might have missed – CHOCKS AWAY! (2) Circling Trusham a pilot did fly, A week on he arrived with a tear in his eye, He knocked on our door and said, “Take a look, at all of these wonderful pictures I took!” Who was head over heels in Trusham? “My tale is a sorry one you will see , BA doesn’t want pilots like me, My plane is too small; but I’d be all set, If I could afford a jumbo jet!” “But jumbos cost a lot of dough, And that’s where you come in you know. From above, your house looks very nice; And this picture’s cheap at half the price!” Perhaps England would have done better with these two goal-keepers – or goals of this size! Is Liz responding to the query about Mr Kipling? We ummed and erred and oood and arred, The decision it was very hard. “You’r’e the last on my list- I’ll do a deal” We shook, and thought we’d bagged a steal. Next day in Trusham, through windows and doors Whispers of, “How much did you pay for yours?” But what remains a mystery, Is how did that Avril get her picture free?! Answers on a postcard…. Just to say I know the answer, and I can confirm Avril’s reputation remains as pure as the driven snow...if not purer…. It was a real community effort on the part of organisers – overall and for particular aspects, stall holders, donors, dogsbodies et al, leaving many exhausted but happy by Sunday. Judith Rowland Sarah Maybin THE CRIDFORD IN JULY Due to unforeseen circumstances there will be no annual party at the Cridford on August 22nd this year. Don't forget Fish and Chip night Friday August 27th. The September Fish and Chip night will be 5-6.30pm only as we have a wedding function from 6.30pm. FOUND Found in the village at the beginning of July, a pair of round framed black glasses. Sue has them (854111). CAROLS DOWN THE LINE Please don't groan when you read this as we do need to know by the end of August (if at all possible) if you are interested in coming along to this event which will be held on Wednesday 8th December. The event is Carols Down the Line and is held on the South Devon Railway between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. Carol singing is held on each station, and we journey on a steam train with coffee and mince pies included in our ticket. Departure time is 19.30 from Buckfastleigh. Christmas hats and lanterns/torches are encouraged. The ticket price will be £10 per head which will include the train trip, coffee and mince pies (with £2 of this going to the church funds here in Trusham). The organisers make a donation out of their proceeds to Action for Children. Booking lines open at the end of August and tickets do sell fast which is why an early response is essential. Please let Sue (854111) know if you would like tickets, and how many. In the meantime, enjoy summer .........!! Pete Gauntlett PERSONAL GROWTH COURSE from a Christian Perspective A year ago we led a six-week DVD based course on personal growth, ‘The Road to Maturity’. It was wellreceived, so we think that it would be good to offer it again, in Autumn, to those unable to do it before. If you want to know more or think you may be interested in joining us, please contact Pat Smethurst (853375) or Angela Cameron (853298). Angela Cameron GARDEN PARTY CREAM TEA Thank you to all who contributed in any way to this event in aid of church funds. We raised a wonderful sum of £242.60. We were blessed with a dry, sunny afternoon except for an entertaining short period when a forest of umbrellas appeared to protect us from a brief downpour. Check out the other photos on the website – www.trusham.com CAUSELY TRUSTEES’ MEETING th This will be on 13 September, 2pm at Middle Earth VILLAGE COMMITTEE The August Parish Meeting was told that DCC Highways would be taking down the "give way" signs in the Village Square, and that quotations were still awaited for restoration of the War Memorial. It was reported that the mobile library service would continue as at present, that a gas bbq had been donated to the village by Liz Jackson. A quote was being obtained to build a small storage shed in the recreation area to house the bbq, gas cylinders and possibly the lawn mower. As the fete and barn dance this year had been such a great success, it was hoped to hold a similar event in 2011. The Village Hall Committee reported that it had switched to a cheaper electricity supplier (NPower), the safety light for the hall had been installed, but there was no progress with finding a way to clean the soundproof ceiling tiles. A quotation had been received for installation of a hearing loop , with an application for funding being made. There would be further quizzes during the year, a coffee morning in October to raise funds for fireworks and a bonfire party on 5th November. A full set of draft minutes can be found on the village noticeboard and on the website. Sue Gauntlett CRICKET A fine evening and idyllic setting, in Lower Ashton, was the scene for the first match between Trusham and Teign Valley Cricket Club. With an age range covering 50 years and cricketing experience differing widely, Trusham put up a fair performance. Tom Edgington was their best bowler, while James Smethurst (one of three Smethursts in the team) scored most runs. There is a team photograph on www.trusham.com . It is hoped that it will become an annual event. Barry Rowland KNIT & NATTER The next meeting of the self-help knitting/sewing group will be on Friday, 17th September, 2.30 at Liz Jackson's house - Orchard Side, Church Lane. It may be useful, but not essential, if you could let Liz know if you intend to come. Liz's phone number is 854259. Doreen Kelley & Liz Jackson WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Mrs Challis gave a very interesting talk about the Cinnamon Trust, a national charity whose volunteers will look after the pets of elderly people should their owners are unwell or have to go into hospital. Members also enjoyed a garden party at Dunchideock, held to celebrate 90 years of WI in Devon. A garden cream tea was relished a couple of weeks later, earned by an energetic trek to see the fern garden at Canonteign. There were spectacular views of Trusham (see www.trusham.com) and intriguing views of the inside of the house – a wonderful setting for weddings. But I am having trouble finding a boat - one that is no longer sea-worthy and, ideally, going begging. Does anyone have one/know of one - if so - please make me happy and give me a ring - on 853298. You will be most welcome to sit in one of our deckchairs (no charge) when it is all finished. What’s on in Trusham No 71 October 2010 ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL REMEMBERING LOVED ONES WHO HAVE DIED Trusham Church offers something very special on Sunday 17th October at 4pm, with our first service to remember loved ones who have died. In the beauty of such a delightful ancient church, heaven can seem very close as we treasure in our hearts those who have meant much to us, and ponder on God's eternal purposes for us. There will be an opportunity for loved ones names to be read out and a candle lit. Names to be remembered in the service can be written on a list available beforehand in the church. We hope to see you there. Rev Paul Wimsett ALL AGE WORSHIP – PETS’ SERVICE Sunday 24th October 9.15am Bring along your pet for this Service, or a toy animal if you think your pet will not cope with meeting other animals! For several years at our AGM, people have asked for a Pets‟ Service Reverend Richard is looking forward to and this month Grinsted leading it. The church will look a bit different – hopefully a bit like Noah‟s Ark [see below!] The service will be short and very informal so why not come along with your pet and join us? Pat Smethurst ST MICHAEL’S CHILDREN’S CLUB Friday 22nd October 5.30–6.15pm The theme is Noah. As well as hearing about Noah, we‟ll be doing some art/craft activities, singing and saying a prayer. All Primary school-aged children are welcome. Pat Smethurst TEPEE WORKSHOP Saturday 23rd October 10am – 12 noon HELP! We‟re going to make an ark to go at the church entrance and another to go inside the church at the front. It is planned both will be HUGE! We need all adults and children to come along and help. This will be especially suitable for teenage youngsters. There will be other activities in the hall – animal mask making. TEPEE playleaders are running the workshop and supplying all the materials. Pat Smethurst HISTORY OF EXETER There will be a talk and supper on Thursday 21 st October at 7pm in Trusham Village Hall by The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, on the history of Exeter from Roman times up until the Blitz. Sue will be cooking a two course supper (vegetarian option available - please advise when you book your tickets) and tea and coffee will be available, but please bring your own wine. Tickets for this event will be £7 a head and all profits will be going to church funds. Please let either Peter (854111) or Angela (853298) know if you would like tickets. Pete Gauntlett AUCTION OF PROMISES Friday 18th November Village Hall Don‟t forget to book the date. Tickets £5 a person to include cheese and wine. Auction of promises. More details in next month‟s newsletter. This is one of a series of fund-raising events for the church. Pat Smethurst TRUSHAM`S FRUIT VEG AND PLANT STALL Many thanks to all who have supported, by supplying or buying from the fruit, veg and plant stall in the Church Porch. It has so far raised £28.25 which has been equally divided between the Village Hall and Church funds. Please keep this going - a great idea and resource. CROQUET, CANAPES & COOLERS Fantastic weather and lovely village green setting, combined with convivial company, aided by a seemingly endless supply of drink and varied and delicious titbits, made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. While for most, the emphasis was on the coolers, canapés and conversation, rather than mallets and hoops, there were some diehards who persevered with play even as dusk descended. Many thanks to Sue and Pete for organising the event, which raised £150.69 for church funds. BOULES-LA LA! The village green recently hosted its first Boules Internationale, when David Smethurst rose to the challenge and, equipped with insider knowledge of the bumps and hollows, pulled off a narrow victory over Frank (Claire Dyer‟s French husband). OOOLALA! COFFEE MORNING Saturday 9thOctober – Village Hall After the great success with last year‟s French themed Coffee Morning, we are hoping to make it even better this year. It will run from 10am „til 12.30ish so come and have your breakfast/brunch or lunch with us! We will be raising some money for the village fireworks as well as another charity (yet to be decided but out of village - see posters for more details nearer the time). We would be most grateful for any draw prizes you can donate or cakes for a cake stall. If you have any queries or offers of help please contact Sarah on 853208 or email me; [email protected] Sarah Maybin KNIT ‘N NATTER QUIZ While on the subject of refreshments and convivial company in pleasant surroundings (Village Hall), another fund-raiser (for the Village Hall) will take place on October 8th, starting at 7.30pm. Bring a team (of four or thereabouts) or join one when you arrive. £3 per person, to include refreshments, gossip and the chance of winning glory! Judith Rowland AUTUMN SPRING CLEAN The Rural Skip will be in Trusham on Saturday 23rd October should you have any large bulky items to dispose of. It will be in the Square, 10am-4pm. The usual restrictions will apply – see www.teignbridge.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2695 WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Those attending the WI September meeting heard the reminiscences of Harry Colclough. His Copper‟s Tale recounted episodes of his life as a policeman in Stoke on Trent (which Trusham Miss Marple recognised the accent?!) and Devon. It was certainly more about Bobbies on the Beat than Coppers in Cars. Judith Rowland We have a very enjoyable afternoon at Liz Jackson‟s house for our “knit and natter” session last month. One of our group has spinning wheels, spins her own yarn and has made various things from this - very interesting. What’s on in Trusham No 72 November 2010 HARVEST IN TRUSHAM What a weekend of harvesting enjoyment, creativity, talent, generosity and celebrating this ancient festival – as usual villagers threw themselves into this in great measure. It started with the first meeting of the new Children`s Group, hearing the Parable of the Sower, singing, and making bread with great and vigorous kneading, and the result was very tasty and professional loaves – we have some budding bakers in Trusham! The Willow Weaving workshop the next day, led by Teignbridge Play Network saw the Village Hall filled with enthusiastic, creative weavers and artists and the result was a gorgeous array of willow fishes, hearts, wreaths, a basket, lamp shades, flower pictures, mobiles and lots more. Thank you to the Trusham Causley Trust for funding this. The Harvest Festival service in church – decorated magnificently with baskets of glowing flowers and foliage, prepared by the enthusiastic and able team who meet for fun evenings to produce arrangements for special church festivals (if anyone would like to join this group, please contact me) – was full of celebration and the auction of produce raised a wonderful £131.50 for Shelterbox. Thank you to all who produced the many gifts and to those who were very generous with their bids – a very entertaining and productive occasion. We then went to The Cridford for Harvest Supper –many thanks to Tracey and Ian for generously providing the delicious Yorkshire Pudding roast meal at £2 a head. It was altogether a happy weekend for those who joined in, in a variety of ways – a big thank you to all concerned. Angela Cameron REPORT OF PCC MEETING - 18TH OCTOBER Links with Chudleigh School are being developed. Children’s artwork on Noah will be exhibited in our church for the AAW service on 24th October. Thanks were expressed for the hard work everyone put in to making the Harvest Festival weekend successful. As the Patronal Festival was not celebrated this year it was suggested that next year the festivals of St Michael and Harvest should be celebrated separately. It was thought that the Bereavement service held on 17th October was a service that could be repeated in time. It was agreed that it is important to offer different types of services to meet the varied needs of parishioners. A music group from Chudleigh will lead an evening service in November. Words for hymns will be projected on a screen. The Nativity Play will be on 12th December. Carols by Candlelight will be in a similar format to last year. Janet will play the organ and Terry Brighton will take the service. Christmas Eve 11pm service led by Martin Kiddle. No service will take place in Trusham on 26th Dec or 2nd Jan. A joint Benefice service will take place in Chudleigh on 2nd Jan. A joint Benefice Advent Carol service will take place on 28th Nov at 4.30pm at Chudleigh Knighton. Benefice weekend 11–13th March in Sidmouth. Keith Powell the speaker, will be in Chudleigh church from 4pm on 14th November in order to introduce himself to the congregations. Successful fundraising activities had attracted a range of villagers. Thanks were expressed to those who organised these events. St Michael’s children’s group had its first meeting in September, with a second on 22nd October. TEPEE [Teignbridge Play Network] was booked to lead workshops. Willow sculptures were made to help decorate the church for harvest. On 23rd October, TEPEE helped make two very large arks to have at church for the Pet, Animal and Human friends Service on 24th October. Christmas cards Rob and Lucy have taken over the production of these cards this year. Cards will be on sale at £4 for 10 cards with envelopes. A selection of prayer cards, book marks and other items will soon be on sale in church. The draft Statements of Significance and Need were accepted by PCC members and will be used to start proceedings for the repairs of the church floor and furnishings. The Auction of Promises which was arranged for November 21st has been postponed until March 25th 2011. local hospice in Exeter and I raised the staggering total of £710. Four of us cycled and out total altogether was in excess of £2,800. Needless to say, I was the one who fell off, but bike and me, though battered and bruised, and very wet, carried on. Thanks all again. Penny Clapham TRUSHAM & TEIGN VALLEY BOOK CLUB The Book Club’s 10th anniversary supper was a great success, attended by over fifty people. The guest speaker, Tim Pears, gave an entertaining insight into various Trusham myths that seem to have been transformed into reality. Thanks must go to Ann Glendinning (whose ideas both the book club and the supper were), to Sue Gauntlett who fed the bodies of the assembled horde and to Tim Pears who gave them food for thought. Judith Rowland Pat Smethurst PARISH MEETING There had been Parish and Village Hall committee meetings at the end of September. It was hoped that a grit box could be obtained from DCC Highways for placement in Church Lane before the winter and quotes were still awaited for the War Memorial maintenance. Sufficient funds were in hand to purchase and install a hearing loop in the hall and an order would be placed imminently. Dates were agreed for fireworks on 5th November, a Christmas coffee morning on 11th December, carol singing around the village on 22nd December (collection to go to Devon Air Ambulance), and the Burns Supper to be held on 29th January. Full copies of the draft minutes can be found on the notice board and on the village website. Sue Gauntlett WOMEN’S INSTITUTE While numbers were smaller than anticipated, the Harvest Supper was still an enjoyable occasion – tasty food and pleasant company, with Ann Davies’ lovely table decoration attracting approving glances. The Christmas meal will be at the Bridford Inn. Contact Liz Jackson for further details. He'd make a good shepherd though.... says Grandma!] There'll be lots of movement round the church and village hall, weather permitting, so do come along. Pete has promised stars to follow! The wise men are getting the camels ready, the innkeeper is preparing for lots of visitors.... If you'd like an acting role please let Pat know. It is hoped all children will want to be shepherds and angels. With Trusham folk taking part, it promises to be another Trusham spectacular. Don't miss it! Put the date in your diary. Pat Smethurst. 1901 CENSUS This has now been uploaded onto www.trusham.com together with the first instalment of transcriptions from the church registers – baptisms from 1559 to 1599, with 130 entries. Paula Browning sends her love and Christmas Greetings to all her Trusham friends. Following last year’s successful collection..... Again this year, instead of sending a card to people you know in Trusham, why not just send one to everybody in the village? The card you choose to send would be displayed on a notice board at the back of church. If you then would like to make a donation in lieu of cards to Christian Aid/ Present Aid, we , as a village could then make a gift that could make a real difference to less fortunate people. Even better, if you are a taxpayer, you can gift aid your donation, so that for every £1 donated, an extra 28p can be claimed as tax relief by the charity. From 1st December, I will put up a display board for cards and arrange for gift aid slips to be available. Donations can be put in the box, immediately on your right as you go through the main church door. Last year we raised £120 which allowed us to purchase some ducks, pigs, bees and beehives which went to families in real need. Your donations make a real difference to others less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you in anticipation and I will let you know how we do in February's What‟s On. John, together with Serge, ran the Moorstone Guest House and Bistro in Bridford until their departure in late 2009 to start a new life in Martinique. Sadly John suffered a heart attack and died on 11th October, just days before he and Serge opened their new restaurant. John was always full of life and had a huge personality to match his great height. He will be sorely missed by many, and our thoughts are with Serge at this time.
