4. QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR FUNCTIONING CONCRETE
“ Load transfer is accomplished through aggregate interlock, through a preformed key, or by the use
of a doweled joint” ACI 224.3R-21 5.24
“For dowels to be effective, they should be smooth, aligned, and supported so they will remain
parallel in both the horizontal and vertical planes during the placing and finishing operation. All
dowels should be sawn and not sheared. Properley alligned, smooth dowels allow the joint to open
as concrete shrinks” ACI 302.1R-12 3.2.7
“The dowels should be centered on the joint, to permit horizontal movemwnt, the dowels must not
bond to the concrete on at least one side of the joint” ACI 224.3R-21 5.2.4
“Dedicated designers realize the proper implementation of their design is crucial for successful construction. Design criteria for concrete construction includes the use of dowels in expansion and construction joints to accomodate movement and load transfer. Improper alignment of these dowels will
cause increased tensile stress, which results in spalling and cracking of the concrete. These failures
will ultimately increase repair and maintenance costs and diminish the appearance of the concrete.”
5. INSTALLATION
• Attach bases to the face of the concrete forms using a double-headed nail or self-tapping screw.
• Center of base shall be centred on form (or positioned as directed by engineer)
• Prior to pouring concrete, SPEED DOWELTM sleeve shall be slipped over base
• Pour concrete minimum 18” from SPEED DOWELTM system and work concrete around the SPEED
DOWELTM system
• Concrete forms shall be removed with bases still attached. Bases may be reused
• Install slip dowels to the full depth of the embedded SPEED DOWELTM sleeve and proceed with
next concrete pour

For optimum reuse of your formwork when
using the SPEED DOWEL system
(For round or square speed dowel base plates)
For square base plates, use
three screws as pictured.
Remove all slurry from the back of the formwork
that the base is attached to for easy form removal.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Inside the speed dowel sleeve is a nipple 20mm long. When inserting dowel into sleeve do not force
any further than the nipple.
When dowel bars have been cropped and not cut, only one end of the dowel will slide into the
sleeve. Try the other end or grind one end of the dowel.
DO NOT HAMMER THE DOWEL INTO THE SLEEVE!
