Evolution in Automation
Paulo Afonso I, II and III Hydroelectric plants
Paulo Afonso Complex Modernization
First stage conclusion: 06/2008
Project Location: Paulo Afonso/BA - Brazil
Controlled I/O Points: About 150.000 points
Paulo Afonso I, Paulo Afonso II and Paulo Afonso III plants are
in the same impoundment.
The Plant I (USU) has three generators and starts the operation
in 1955.
The Plant II (USD) has six generators and starts operation in
1961.
Power Plant III (UST) has four generators and starts operation
in 1971.
The project was divided into stages, where the first would be
the USU, its substation, water intake, and ancillary services.
Still exist in the complex, the Plants of Paulo IV and Apolônio
Sales, which have not been modernized in this contract.
The main benefits of the system:
Supervision and remote control;
Reliability and robustness of the communication system with
more accurate diagnoses;
Easy maintenance Supervisory system, where the client can
make small adjustments and additions of points;
Inclusion of a station close to the generators, allowing faster
starting and stopping of the generators and helps the
maintenance;
Gains in production;
Synchronization between AUs and monitoring system with
GPS, allowing checking the sequence of events of the system.
The scope of the solution provided by Altus are the following
equipment and services:
• Specification, design and assembly of electrical panels:
Altus has been contracted by Chesf with the following
objectives:
o 13 generator AUs;
- Implement an engineering solution for monitoring, control and
protection of the generating units, outlet sluice of water,
substations and ancillary services, with the main features:
o 20 Substation AUs;
o 4 Auxiliary Service AUs;
o 3 water intake points;
- Record of events with an accuracy of 1ms for all digital inputs;
o Local boards and MCCs;
- Record of events with precision of 100 ms for all analog
inputs;
o Protection Tables;
- Network in dual redundant optical ring to increase security and
enhance performance in communications between the AUs
(autonomous units) and the supervisory system;
- Supervision system with redundant servers;
- Redundant Database System;
- Synchronize AUs satellite (GPS);
- Provide information and events to the ONS (Electric System
National Operator);
Benefits
Paulo Afonso I, II and III Hydroelectric plants are located in the
river São Francisco, in Paulo Afonso Bahia. In total, they
operate with 13 generator units and an installed capacity of
1,417,000 kW.
o Low and medium voltage distribution boards.

Supervision and Control
To implement the system, two "Hot Stand-By" supervision servers were provided communicating with all AUs via optical ring communication (ethernet). The
screens show the data in real time.

Networking
Architecture
In each AU and in the communication hub were used "RuggedCom" industrial switches to construct the double optical ring communication. ALNET II TCP,
Modbus TCP, DNP3 or IEC 60870-5-103 are the protocols of this network.
Three optical ports Switch. The third port is used to connect the adjacent rings.
Two optical ports Switch. Both optical ports are used to the local ring.
Two optical ports Switch. Both optical ports are used to the local ring. Besides, it provides an alternative
electrical connection route between both rings of each plant.
