Introduction: This course presents a word-building systems approach to the study of basic medical terminology. The instructor will be your facilitator and partner in learning. Prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, abbreviations, and symbols are included in the content. Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to recognize, pronounce, spell, and use in context commonly used medical terms. The student will become prepared to successfully enroll in Medical Terminology II. Medical Assistant Students This class will teach and evaluate content to students in the medical assistant program (as well as related programs), required by the AAMA, including the following cognitive, psychomotor and affective areas: I.C.3 IV.C.10 IV.C.11 3. Describe body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and cavities 10. Diagram medical terms, labeling the word parts 11. Define both medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems Themes: We will focus repeatedly on prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, abbreviations, and symbols. Concepts: Word-building, Anatomy, Body Systems, Body Areas, Directions, Regions, Pronunciation. Issues: Writing Skills, Penmanship, Command of Spoken and Written English, Attendance Skills: To correctly read, write, spell, and pronounce a variety of commonly used medical terms. Assessment: 1. 2. 3. 4. 10 unit quizzes worth 10 pts each. Completed ONLINE. 10 homework assignments worth 10 pts each (homework is graded on completion only) turned in ONLINE. Final Exam worth 50 Pts. Completed ONLINE in Moodle Total 250 pts; A = >225 pts, B = 200 pts, C = 175 pts, D = 150 pts, F = < 150 pts Homework and Quizzes are to be turned in according to the course schedule in Moodle NO LATE HOMEWORK OR QUIZZES WILL BE ALLOWED! NO EXCEPTIONS! Course Academic Dishonesty Policy: Any student caught cheating, duplicating another student’s work, or other form of academic dishonesty, will be counseled by the instructor. The first offense will result in a “zero” grade for that assignment/assessment, a lowering of the final course grade by one full grade, and the student’s name and offense will be sent to the Dean of Students for LBCC. A second offense will result in an automatic “fail” for the course and the student will be referred to the Dean of Students for LBCC to determine further disciplinary action.
