The Franchise has to be a global brand
A franchise that has better global brand recognition will
have a head start against brands that are new in the
market. However, an internationally recognised brand
does not guarantee the success of the brand in new
markets. Many franchisees think that the franchise fee
paid upfront is solely for the use the brand name. In truth,
the brand name is only one part of the equation. When
acquiring a franchise, whilst the brand plays a part, it is by
far more important that the potential franchisee considers
the acceptability of the concept, its operational success
and the franchisor’s ability to document and replicate its
success.
The franchisor must have a minimum amount
of franchise experience
It is true that a franchisor who has had many years of
managing franchise would operate very differently from
a new franchisor. However, regardless of the duration the
franchisor has been franchising, the key lies in whether the
franchisor is focussed on managing a franchise system that
places the franchisee’s profitability and success as their
top priority. A franchisor who is focussed on helping its
franchisees to efficiently train and set up initially, monitor
and offer on going mentorship, retain and secure new
customers, implement and leverage efficient information
technology systems will be more likely to have successful
franchisees.

hen asked what type of franchise is best to
own, many would assume it needs to be a
Starbucks, McDonald’s type for food & beverage
franchises or Zara and H&M for retail franchises.
Even though these types of mega franchises enjoy
an extremely high profile, and do have strong and
robust systems, these franchises often require very
large investments and seek out similarly experienced
groups as franchise partners and do not open these
opportunities to single unit franchisees. So if an
individual investor wanted to become a franchisee,
what type of franchises should they seek?
After many years of matching franchisees with
franchises, we have accumulated a list of assumptions
(non exhaustive) that potential franchisees make
when buying a franchise:

Many Franchise success stories have emerged from
the F&B sector. International brands like Burger King,
McDonald’s, and Asian brands like Bon Chon, Din Tai
Fung, Breadtalk have been able to grow internationally
via franchising extremely successfully. Besides, food is a
category that everyone understands and loves.
However, the F&B franchise sector is only one of the many
franchise categories a potential investor should consider.
This is especially true if the investor has specific interests,
skill sets and investment quantums.
In fact, brands that offer services like courier services,
cleaning services have consistently ranked highly as the
best franchise opportunities in the US magazine THE
ENTREPRENEUR Franchise Survey.

Another sector that is growing quickly is the education
and children’s enrichment sector. In many countries the
education sector is a much regularised area that requires
specific know-how and expertise. Securing a franchise
allows the franchisee to navigate the pitfalls and allow
them a more direct path to get into the education sector.
Using a well-known name with an established marketing
network will also ensure a quicker path towards
operational breakeven.
Enrichment concepts are excellent for entrepreneurs who
want to get into children’s education but do not want to
be engaged in the preschool sector. Enrichment concepts
allow franchisees more flexibility on time involvement.
Buying into a franchise system guarantees a
franchisee’s success
About 1 in 4 franchisees do not achieve the results they
expect when they acquire a franchise. Many franchisees
expect that investing in a franchise will reduce their
chance of failure to zero. Franchising a known brand
will reduce chances of failure but there are still many
factors the franchisees need to be responsible for that are
critical to the success of the business. Franchisors share
with franchisees their experience and technical knowhow but DO NOT guarantee the success of the business.
Franchisees need to be responsible for the management
of their staff, marketing of the outlet, maintaining
the standards at the outlet and cooperating with the
franchisor for the franchisee to maximise its chances to
be successful. In some instances, where a location is not
ideal, franchisees need to expect to work doubly hard to
turn the business around. This is the time to work even
closer with the franchisor and not the time to start looking
under the microscope for who is to blame.
Ultimately, the benefits of being part of a franchise system
does balance out the potential pitfalls. This is especially
true when a franchisee has thoroughly researched and
done his/her own due diligence to ensure that their
franchise of choice has a robust system, know-how, good
training systems in place and that there is a good fit
between franchisor and franchisee.

added a wine bar plus a selection of gourmet foods,
in essence combining three different businesses in
