didn’t want to choose him. But Merlin said to Uther: “I’ve always helped you, didn’t I?
You know that, don’t you? Now you have to do what I say. Merlin took the baby away from
Uther’s castle and gave him to a knight called Hector.
Merlin didn’t tell Hector where the baby was. Hector and his wife had to look after
little Arthur, but they were happy to have him. They already had an older son called Kay,
and now Kay had younger cousin. Uhter and Igraine didn’t have some more children,

and two years later they both died. No one knew that they had a child. When Uther died,

3) Conversation between the knights
To become the King of England you have to get the sword out of the stone. As you
could see the knights could not simply pull it out. At night they gather in a pub and
think of possibilities to get it out. Pick one knight and complete the conversation.
Knight 1: The sword has to be pulled out! I think we’re too weak. We just have
to___________________ harder. When we’re stronger we will be able to pull it out.
Knight 2: That’s a silly idea. Did you forget that all of us together pulled and the sword
did not move one inch? I think it got stuck. We just need to fill some _________ into
the gap. Then it will come out easily.
Knight 3: That sounds better than the first idea. We should do that and if it doesn’t
work I will take my _________________ and let it pull out the sword. That animal is
much stronger than us!
Knight 4: Alright, let’s try that. If we do not succeed I will get a ______________ and
a chisel1 and open up the stone. Then the sword will be ours!
Do you have any ideas to get the sword out of the stone? Write them down!
