Tips for the Club Director by Harry Falk • [email protected] For those of you who don't know, I am not only a tournament director, but also a club director and manager. I've been directing club games for 17 years, and, by now, I'd estimate that I've run at least 2,500 sessions of club bridge in that time. I'd like to take this chance to offer a few suggestions to club managers and directors to help make their games run more smoothly, and perhaps a few to make the game a more enjoyable experience for players. 1. KNOW THE BASICS – The most frequent calls at a club game are for leads or bids out of turn, insufficient bids, revokes, and exposed cards. The laws are not difficult to understand, but they sometimes can be a bit difficult to remember when you're called to the table. A good director has his Law Book at hand so he can refer to it when he can't remember everything. If you don't want to carry the Law Book every time, make up a little cheat sheet that covers the most common situations. Like a Boy Scout, a good director is prepared. 2. KEEP THE GAME MOVING – There's nothing worse than a game that bogs down because of a couple of slow players. Enforce the time limits. It's best if you have a clock, but, even if not, keep tabs on the slow players and let them see that you're monitoring them. It's not fair to the rest of the field to run the game based on the pace of the slowest players in the room. And don't be afraid to penalize slow 22 ACBL District 9 players. You'd be amazed how quickly they can play when prodded to do so, (usually, after I give a stern warning to a pair, for the next three rounds, they'll call me to the table to show me that they're caught up.) 3. BE FIRM BUT BE FAIR – Duplicate bridge is a competitive game and is governed by a series of Laws. When you're called to the table, there is often a conflict between the information you receive from each side at the table. Listen to both sides, but don't allow the players to take over the conversation. Don't allow one person to interrupt another. After you've received all the information, make your ruling. Don't try to please everyone. Simply apply the Laws. Accept the fact that someone will not be happy with your ruling. If you are consistent and professional, players will respect your rulings even if they come out on the short end. 4. PLAN AHEAD – At the start of the game, try to estimate how many tables will be playing. (An easy way to do this is to look at your club report for the same day in the previous year. Tournament directors use previous years' figures as guidelines for estimated turnout, and the prior year is a remarkably good predictor of what will happen this year). If you're using electronic scoring, set up most of the game in advance, and then simply change the movement parameters when you know the final game details. At the start of the game, announce the size of the sections. Make your announcements clearly and concisely. Be sure to warn of upcoming sitouts or skips in the movement. At the end of the game, thank your players for coming and make other appropriate announcements. (At my club, we make an announcement about keeping the place clean every day. I also take note when players don't cooperate in the cleanup effort, and I mention it to them next time they play. You'd be surprised how much cleaner our club is than many others at the end of a session.) IF YOU RUN A SECTIONAL! All changes to sanctioned sectionals require approval from the District 9 Tournament Committee as well as our District Coordinator, Patty Johnson. If you change anything, whether it be your dates or the type of sectional or the location, or if you decide to cancel an already-sanctioned tournament, please let Patty Johnson know immediately by emailing her at [email protected]. Information should also be sent to Shirley Seals, Chair of the Tournament Committee, at [email protected]. ATTENTION DISTRICT 9 PLAYERS If you serve on an Appeals Committee at any District 9 Regional, you will be thanked with scrip for a free play, good for one year from the date you serve on the committee. REMEMBER Finally, the most important tip of all--5. MAKE SURE YOUR PLAYERS HAD A GOOD TIME! – After all, bridge is only a game, and we want everyone to spend more of their leisure time at the bridge club. SBNx www.District9ACBL.org 23 Remembering Jayne Thomas, 1931–2012 Jayne Thomas, who held more unit, district and national ACBL positions than any other member of District 9, died June 11, 2012 in Tampa, Florida with her partner (who was not a bridge player) Sue Franson at her side. Jayne was loved, feared, revered by bridge players and hotel staff all over the state of Florida. She has been written about in our publications several times, beginning in 1984 in Unit 128's Florida Bridge News, then in 2004 on the occasion of her attaining Grand Life Master status, then in 2010 when Zeke Jabbour graced the pages of the Sunshine Bridge News with high praise for bridge tournaments in Florida (the quality of the field as well as the quality of the tournaments). Jayne received a half page memorial notice in ACBL's August Bulletin (see page 66). She had chaired five NABCs in Florida. After Jayne passed away, two District 9 board members fondly recalled playing in sectionals in their areas many years ago, when they were newer players, and enjoying winning games with the formidable Jayne as their partner. 24 ACBL District 9 Jayne Is Grand! The Fall North American Championships in Bal Harbour was a great success. The attendance: 10,500 tables! District 9 volunteer workers: 10,500 man-hours… or so it seemed. Thanks to all of you who stuffed goodie bags, registered visitors, or helped in any way. It was a pleasant experience working with you. You can rest up until September of 1986, when we will again need volunteers for the World Pairs and Rosenblum Team Championships to be held at the same hotel. Jayne Thomas, Executive Manager of Unit 128, became the 42nd Floridian to acheive the rank of Grand Life Master on the last round of the last day of the January Orlando Regional. I hope everyone enjoyed the terrific entertainment offered during the Fall Championships: Al Roth, Lady BJ, Ron Anderson's "Family Feud", the Follies, the square dancing, etc., etc. Unit 128's tournaments are successful to a great degree due to Jayne's hard work in running them. If you could see her negotiating with hotel staff (and frequently cajoling them into giving good service), shopping the farmer's market, Sam's Club, the Dollar Store, Home Shopping Network outlet and the web, hustling along the serving of the late-night snacks (or serving them herself) and training volunteers for the Senior Breakfasts, you'd be truly impressed... and you would be witnessing some of the skills she uses to do well at the bridge table. KUDOS and MANY THANKS to Jayne Thomas. • During Jayne's time as a District Director, she made three life-long best friends from around the country, Virgil Anderson, Joan Gerard and Barbara Nudelman. With Anderson she won the NABC event that allowed her to be crowned a Grand Life Master when reaching 10,000 masterpoints in 2004. Jayne was District 9's voice at the ACBL Board of Directors for 12 years, replacing the very popular Bob Saron. After Jayne chaired the 1983 Fall NABC at the Sheraton Bal Harbour, she had these words for us: At that time, here's what we wrote about her. Left to Right, Joan Gerard, our famous Jayne Thomas, Barbara Nudelman Her next session of bridge was a club game at her local Tampa Bay Bridge Center, where Jayne is known for her generosity (homecooked goodies, not gifts at the bridge table). Besides cooking for her non-bridge partner Sue, and for family, friends, neighbors and other bridge players, Jayne enjoys fishing, reading, shopping for bargains and gambling. We asked Jayne to tell us a little bit about her life and here's what she emailed back to us--we hope you enjoy getting to know Jayne a little better from her autobiographical notes: Born November 23, 1931 in Akron, Ohio. Spent summers and other vacations in Kentucky and West Virginia where I learned to play bridge while filling in for the adult who had chores. Won a war bond in 1942. Moved to St. Petersburg, Florida 1944. Loved writing short stories and poetry.(Once memorized 100 poems on a dare from a teacher who offered an A for the year. She was not happy.) Attended University of Florida (1949-1953) majoring in math, only female in classes (it had turned coed the year before). Began teaching in Tampa in 1953. Taught mostly high school, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus - for 30 years. Started playing both rubber bridge every day after school and duplicate whenever I could get away. Began working with Jeff Glick on administration in the late 70's, retired from teaching in 1986 and started working as executive manager Unit 128. Was a member of the National Board of Directors for twelve (12) years. Served as president and vice-president of both the Education and Charity Foundations (currently President ACBL Charity Foundation). Have served as president of both Unit 128 and District 9. Goodwill member and Charity member. Won the Silver Ribbon Pairs with Virgil Anderson in 1994 and was second in the National Women's Pairs. My favorite bridge partners include Virgil Anderson, Muriel Altus, Linda Perlman, Steve Warner, Joan Gerard, Barbara Nudelman and many, many others. Thank you all. Bridge is a partnership like no other. www.District9ACBL.org 25 Memorial contributions in Jayne's name may be made to the ACBL Educational Foundation. When making a donation, please give Jayne's name and whether you would like notification to be sent to Sue Franson, or to District 9 President Bill Rauld. Send your check to: Jim Mahaffey, on the left in the photo with Jayne and Sue at our Orlando NABC in November 2010, was one of Jayne's best friends for countless years. At the Philadelphia Fall NABC, when Jayne was memorialized during the Goodwill Reception, Jim told the crowd how much Jayne had done for Florida bridge. "She was a highly successful administrator," Mahaffey said, "and she had an uncanny way of always choosing the right way to do things. I'm going to miss this Grand Dame." Quote from ACBL Daily Bulletin. In more recent years, Jayne's circle of partners grew to include Phil Altus and Dave Anderson. With Anderson she topped her section less than a week before she passed away. ACBL Educational Foundation Attn: Donations 6575 Windchase Blvd Horn Lake MS 38637-1523 The ACBL Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides grants for people who come forward with interesting or innovative ideas for the teaching of Bridge. The Foundation trustees serve at their own expense allowing nearly 100% of all donations to be distributed to benefit the promotion of bridge. Your donations to the ACBL Educational Foundation are tax deductible. Jayne served on the board of the Educational Foundation for many years, including as its president. Jayne was instrumental in getting bridge books put on library shelves all over the country. According to the Foundation's web site, that program continues to this day. SBNx NOTICE FROM THE ACBL HANDBOOK OF RULES AND REGULATIONS When a sectional (excluding STaCs) or higher rated event is being conducted within 25 miles of a club game’s playing site, the club is permitted to hold only its regularly scheduled club masterpoint games (i.e., no special games). TOURNAMENT ATTENDEES Please summon a director should you encounter a deck of cards which is very far past its prime. Every once in a while we miss replacing a really icky deck, but we are happy to do it if we know about it at the time. Please also call about bidding box cards which need to be replaced. 26 ACBL District 9 President Carol Hamilton [email protected] 941-371-0949 Vice-President Russ Delaney 941-926-4531 [email protected] Secretary Sandy Lewis [email protected] 941-923-6335 As I write this message, the Summer NABC’s in Philadelphia have just concluded. Congratulations to our Unit members who placed in National events, including Gloria and Les Bart, Nie Lih Kalat, Roger Johnson, and Jim Bridges. Also, felicitations to everyone else who participated in Regional events. I’m sure you had a great time, and I love to see your names in print. We have three events coming up in the next few months. The first one is for our Intermediate/Newcomer players, to help them in winning silver points, leading toward the goal of becoming Life Masters down the road. On October 6-7, there will be a 0–500 Non-Life Masters Tournament held at the In-Between Club, with games for all levels of NLM players. Saturday will feature pairs games and Sunday will be a Swiss Teams event. Check the ad in this issue for all of the details. If you have any questions, you can call Doris Linton, our I/N Coordinator, or Michelle Golden. Treasurer Sandra Fleischman The second is our participation with other units in our District 941-580-3719 in a week of StaC games from October 8–14. These games award [email protected] Board Members Doris Linton 941-485-0902 [email protected] Cynthia Murphy 941-355-3160 [email protected] Sandi Murray (941) 302-3448 [email protected] Sheila Pies Unit Photographer 941-587-6808 [email protected] Jim Russell 941-592-8117 [email protected] silver points in club games and provide scoring across a larger field to increase available awards. They are for all of our players, those who need silver points, and those who like to compete against a larger field for more points. The Unit Board has decided to provide a one-time coupon for one dollar for each unit member to use in a StaC game that week. This is to promote participation in these games by reducing the cost. Please check on the Unit website, www.unit102.com, and at your local clubs to find out when the games are being held. The third event is our Fall Sectional, being held this year at the In-Between Club November 15–18. As usual, we will have special events for the 0–299’ers players at every session. We encourage you all to come and play in order to support the efforts the Unit is making to provide the best in bridge for you right here in your backyard! I look forward to seeing you all at the tables. Keep up the good work on making bridge a pleasure for your partners and opponents! Unit 102 – Page 27 MICHAEL BELA KASSAY (1926-2012) Death has claimed a second of Sarasota’s leading bridge players within a month as Michael Kassay passed away on June 4. Born in Transylvania, Kassay was a five-time Hungarian bridge champion. A resident of Sarasota since 1988, Michael was a platinum life master, having accumulated approximately 11,350 masterpoints, making him the Unit’s fourth leading point holder at the time of his death. Michael’s service to bridge was as impressive as his skill as a player. He was a founding force of Unit 102, served as its board president, and was the Unit’s original web designer and web master. Preceded in death by his wife Mary, our sympathies go out to his daughters Elizabeth and Sheila. ELAINE BOWERS One of Unit 102’s most popular bridge players, Elaine Bowers, passed away in July after a courageous battle with cancer. Elaine moved to Sarasota in 2004 and served the bridge community for several years as caddy master. She also volunteered at Nate’s Place where she walked rescue dogs. Our sympathies are extended to her daughters Sherry and Shannon and her three granddaughters. UNIT 102 CHARITY SWISS TEAMS The annual Charity Swiss Teams, held on June 10 to benefit the All Faiths Food Bank, was an outstanding success with 29 teams participating (four more than last year). The event itself raised $600 for the charity, more than matched by $1,366 raised by our very generous bridge players. Winners in the various classifications: Flight A: Gloria & Les Bart, Sandra & Dick Fleischman, Sheila & Roger Pies Flight B: Keith Falkner, Marjorie Lennon, Linda Mason, Nanette Meyer Flight C: Hazel & Barry Capal, Charlotte & Doug Hubbard 299ers A&B: Virginia Buehner, Donald Carr, Carol Franklin, Polly Webb UNIT BOARD JOTTINGS The May sectional’s table count was down by 26, precipitating a revenue loss greater than what was budgeted. A number of suggestions were discussed as to how the bottom line might be improved for the out-of-season sectional. One is to appoint a co-chair for the event to deal specifically with publicity. On the expense side, it was felt that a single professional director rather than two would be adequate. Also, the use of Bridgemates for scoring would save caddy expense and aid the director’s tabulation of results. The Unit Board voted to underwrite $1.00 of the $1.50 ACBL levy to participate in one of the October STaC week games. Coupons will be issued for any Unit 102 member to use once during the STaC week. Sheila Pies and Sandra Fleischman were thanked for bringing the proposal forward. Jim Russell announced that there was insufficient interest to run a junior bridge camp this August as hoped. Unit 102 – Page 28 Sandi Murray has visited numerous hotels in the vicinity of the November and January sectionals and recommended a new host hotel for the events. The Board accepted her proposal for the AmericInn, located at 5931 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, phone number (941) 342-8778, bridge rate $79 per night. The hotel is three miles from the game site. Suzanne Mosler was named “Sunshine Chairperson” to send get-well and condolence cards on behalf of the bridge community. Harriette Buckman advised the Board of the need for the Unit to welcome personally new, transfer, and reinstated members. Doris Linton volunteered to be responsible for communicating with new members. There was general agreement of the need to educate Intermediate Newcomers in the necessary rights, responsibilities, and proprieties of playing duplicate bridge. Proprieties include such things as convention card use, handling of bidding boxes, and utilization of directors. The possibility of a mentorship program was discussed. 72% CLUB 74.36 Larry Auerbach & Jim Russell, In-Between DBC, June 15 73.88 Pat Samuels & Terry McHenry, Intercity Bridge Club, July 19 72.12 Sandra Fleischman & David Wicentowski, In-Between DBC, July 13 NEW TO UNIT 102* Unit 102 welcomes 11 new ACBL members to the Sun Coast Bridge Association. My message to you this month is filled with a great sadness. Longtime friend and sometimes teammate Jayne Thomas has sadly passed away. Her dedication to Florida Bridge was unparalleled. She was a unique innovator for Unit 128 whose ideas brought our District 9 several highly successful NABC’s, and a Junior World Championship. She and Bernie Chazen pioneered the now highly popular Regionals At Sea cruises. She established the concept letting our Clubs run their own Sectional Tournaments by having the Unit back them for three years after which the Club was on its own. The Unit 128 and now District 9 hospitality package at all our Regional Tournaments – orange juice, coffee, pizza and beer nights, dessert nights, Unit dinner night, Senior breakfasts, and subsidized lunches was all developed by Jayne. She served on our Unit Board for nearly 40 years and as our Executive Business Manager for 25 of those years. She served as the District 9 Director to the ACBL National Board for over a dozen years from 1987 to 1999 and was Chairman of the ACBL Educational Foundation. In that capacity she was instrumental in getting bridge books into our public libraries. She was also a tireless supporter of Junior Bridge in the Unit and the District and on the National and International scene. She served as Coordinator of our Grand National Teams and North American Pairs. She established a Sectional Tournament in conjunction with the finals which would generate money to send the winners to NABC finals representing Florida bridge. Jayne was a regular at the Tampa Bay Bridge Center. She was a Grand Life Master with over 12,700 master points. With long time friend and former ACBL President Virgil Anderson they won the Silver Ribbons Pairs in the 1990’s. 77.50% 76.36% 75.00% 74.93% 74.44% 74.40% 74.17% 74.07% 74.07% 74.05% 73.81% 73.61% 73.61% 73.47% 73.30% 73.21% 73.17% 73.15% 73.15% 72.92% 72.69% 72.62% 72.62% 72.43% 72.36% 72.22% 72.22% 72.16% 72.02% 72.02% 72% Club Nancy Mitchell / Craig Hemphill Barbara Eveleigh / George Rupprecht Raianne Heading / Patrick Heading Lois Parker Pearson / Michael Pearson Glenda Armstrong / Eleanor Goodrich Linda Barson / Jerry Barson Nadine Sabatier / Steve Bonner Patricia Dovell / Adrian Dovell Bonnie Lamkin / Loughin Black Howard Langenthal / Bob Sleven Linda Tafet / Norman Tafet Angela Kaiser / Stan Pienczykowski Ginny Crump / Ian Harvey Millie Rubin / Arnold Goldstein Donna Weaver / Susan Weiss Linda Tafet / Norman Tafet Leo Hoffman / Joe Menkes Janet Laudenslager / Jean Seward Elaine Homes / Shaun Cleary Barbara Haberman / Warren Kornfield Ed Kemnitzer / Chris Shanklin Mady Bloom / Phyllis Dubetsky Richard Gross / Miles Storfer Marlise Cusick / Alexander Weiss Bonny Pacetti / Brian Pacetti Linda Kitts / Martha Russo Marcia Berman / Barry Klein Linda Barson / Jerry Barson Gene Davidson / Lenny Gross Stella Blodinger / Jack Blodinger Jacksonville School of Bridge Palm Coast DBC Palm Coast DBC St. Augustine DBC Bridge Deck, Naples St. Marks BC, Boca Raton Friendly Seniors DBC, Jacksonville Gatorbridge Club, Gainesville Citrus Bridge Club, Lakeland Temple Shaarei Shalom, Boynton Beach WIN the bridge club, Boca Raton McGregor Point DBC, Ft. She established our Unit motto "Bridge is Great in Florida Unit 128". Thanks to her tireless efforts we now have 9 Regional Tournaments in Florida each of which delivers us one week of this unique form of entertainment to our in season 20,000 ACBL members. Unit 128 – Page 34 Unit 128 – Page 35 JAYNE THOMAS, 1931-2012 Jayne Thomas, Executive Manager of Unit 128 for over 25 years, passed away on June 11 after a year of waning health. In 2010, Zeke Jabbour wrote this about Jayne: I have marveled at the service concessions made by Florida hotels. If one wonders why, there is an answer: a hard-driving, crusty nononsense lady named Jayne Thomas. Jayne has long been engaged by Florida’s giant Unit 128 and often by the other Florida units, as well, to negotiate, well in advance, the room and service prices, playing space, food service, entertainment suite and dozens of other details. Jayne Thomas Although sometimes controversial, she earns her keep. Her formula sets the gold standard for tournaments, and District 9 tournaments rank with the best in the entire ACBL nation. The free coffee and orange juice, alone, would be a budget-buster for many tournaments elsewhere. She brings all of the constituent elements together like a symphony conductor, separating the notes from the noise, while creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Jayne is herself a Grand Life Master. (I’ve played with her and she’s about as tough at the bridge table as she is at the negotiating table.) She is a bridge establishment godmother moving seamlessly from bridge functionary to bridge player. Shortly after Sharon and I migrated to Florida, a hurricane was threatening to disrupt a South Florida tournament to everyone’s concern. It’s said, and I believe it, that Jayne went out, confronted that big wind and said, “Baby, you better blow the other way!” And it did! Not since Sinatra have we seen that kind of clout!—Oprah, maybe? Many of us will be enjoying our Jayne Thomas memories with each other, especially at a memorial celebration during the Tampa Regional, December 10-16. Rest in peace, Jayne. Save a seat for us at the bridge game (or the slot machines!). --MSA Unit 128 is pleased to offer 13 opportunities for extra points at Unit 128 clubs between now and the end of the year. Club managers can choose to hold any or all of these games. Any club manager who did not receive the Club Managers Newsletter email should contact Charles Gill at [email protected] immediately.
