SF HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION • Building Pride in our Community • Winter 2015 • Page x HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION • Building Pride in our Community • Spring 2015 Message from the President Pro Tem I hope everyone is getting a comfortable foothold on 2015. My name is Rick Sulka. I am currently the President Pro Tem for your Sherwood Forest Homeowners Association. My wife Diane and I have lived in Sherwood Forest since 1999. I would like to thank Tom Bramson for his time serving as recent President of the HOA and wish him and his family the best with their adventure to Colorado. Tom claims he will be back and they have kept their Sherwood Forest home as a rental for now. We look forward to the return of Tom and his family. Elections will take place at the annual meeting Wednesday March 25, 2015. We invite ALL interested residents to run for a seat on the Board (please refer to the enclosed flier). Anyone running must be in good standing with the SFHOA and have paid their 2015 annual dues. It is our goal to make 2015 our largest paid membership, since the organization of the SFHOA in 1994. Since the annual dues are our primary means of fundraising, your support and participation are VERY important to the community. You can pay your dues online at www.sherwoodforesthoa.org, or by mailing in the insert enclosed. You will be able to pay your dues at the front desk entrance of the meeting. 2014 was an eventful year. Along with celebrating the Twentieth Anniversary of the SFHOA, we encountered issues that truly brought the community together. Thanks to the countless hours and effort of the SFHOA board and volunteers, we were able to accomplish many goals but there is always much more that we can do. We need folks to run for the board and volunteers are always welcome. The SFHOA Board looks forward to meeting all of you at our upcoming general meeting on March 25th. We are very excited about the guest speakers who will be attending and hope that they will give all of you more insight on how your involvement in the community directly affects us living in Sherwood Forest. As you can see, by reading the meeting agenda, we will also be discussing some very important issues such as; voting on the revision of our By-Laws and an important update on our continued lawsuit against the proposed eldercare facility. Your thoughts and opinions on these issues are very important and we welcome your input and ideas on how we can continue to serve Sherwood Forest as we move towards our next twenty years! — Rick SAVE THE DATE General Meeting for ALL Members & Residents of Sherwood Forest Wednesday - March 25th Northridge Middle School Sign-in: 6:30 pm – Meeting begins: 7:00 pm Agenda for the meeting: Vote to Approve revised SFHOA By-Laws. Our By-Laws were last revised in 1995. Since that time, there have been changes in nonprofit laws and also changes in how our corporation operates and does business. We need to make changes in the existing bylaws to comply with current law and current business practice. There are also changes we would like made in the present bylaws in order to make our operations easier in the future, based on our years of experience. The Board has viewed and approved these revisions, but we need YOUR vote, as Members of the HOA, vote to approve as well. Please go to our website to review our latest By-Laws. www.sherwoodforesthoa.org Election of HOA Board Elections will take place at this annual meeting. If you are interested in running for the Board, please fill out the form below and mail it with your dues. Anyone running must be in good standing with the SFHOA and have paid their annual dues. The SFHOA Board and its attorneys have expended countless hours and substantial funds opposing the project. Mr. Selan’s appeal of the North Valley Area Planning Commission’s decision in favor of the SFHOA is set for trial on March 28. Meanwhile, donations to the Eldercare Legal Fund are critically needed to continue to protect the interest of the community. SFHOA Outstanding Service Awards The Board of Directors will present Outstanding Service Awards at the Annual Meeting to four of its members for their many hours dedicated to making Sherwood Forest a better place for all. Congratulations to Tom Bramson, Donnal Poppe, Jan Scott and Virginia Williams! In Addition Community information tables will be available, with news & information. Our neighbors, Cha-Cha Chicken will also be there with samples from their wonderful restaurant! We’re Looking for the next Homes of the Months Each month we would like to recognize 2 homes – one north of Parthenia & the other south – that best showcase the character & tradition of Sherwood Forest. Our selections are subjective in nature & have no bearing on size, design or market value. If you feel that you know of a home that shows a special pride in ownership, please email us your nomination. Winning homes will be showcased on our website & in the fall newsletter. (Officers & Directors of the SFHOA are not eligible) Just Where IS Sherwood Forest The boundaries of the 1100 single-family homes that comprise Sherwood Forest are: Nordhoff to the North Balboa to the East Lindley to the West The RR tracks to the South Sherwood Forest – Who Are We? There has been a lot of discussion about just HOW our neighborhood got its name. One of the most popular rumors has been that the 1939 movie, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” was filmed here. Unfortunately, this is not only a rumor, but a myth. In 1938, we were just another of the many orange groves in the Valley. No room for Errol Flynn & his Merry Men to roam & hide from Prince John or the Sheriff of Nottingham! So how & why are we Sherwood Forest? The SFHOA has been working with the newly located, Museum of the San Fernando Valley to find the answer. But we need YOUR help! We know that there are still original residents living here…and many descendants who continue to live in the family home. Do you have deeds, contractor’s paperwork, blueprints or pictures as well as interesting neighborhood stories? We want to hear from you! Drop us a line on our Message Board. This information will be published in future newsletters & on our website. Additionally, The Museum is interested in making copies of whatever you have for their collection. As Michel Stevens, Chair, Marketing & Development for The Museum, has said: “We have absolutely nothing on the history of Sherwood Forest. But we welcome any & all materials that may help you & us solve this mystery & add to The Museum’s collection of Northridge history”. Spring 2015 • Page 3 NORTHRIDGE SPARKLE By Andrea Alvarado What is Northridge Sparkle Campaign? exterior. Additionally, we are planning to paint the wall at Pro Tires, the bridge on Reseda, as well as getting the business owners involved in painting their buildings. More planters and flowers are designated for our Main Street. New restaurants and retail stores are planned at 8700 Reseda Blvd. The recycling center and 99¢ Store issues are being addressed. And, of course, more clean-up is being planned for spring 2015. Northridge Sparkle began as a group of Neighborhood Watch citizens concerned about the condition of their once loved community - an Old Downtown Northridge - once thrived. The Hollywood Colony vied to live here; the city was considered a semi-rural gem. But, now, businesses were moving out, & our main street, Reseda Blvd, had been shot in the chest by a now defunct BID that left the community in ruin. Who are the group’s representatives? Andrea Alvarado does networking, organization and marketing. Don Larson, is the owner of the Das Bauhaus Apartment Complex. His family goes back generations! In fact, his Great, Great Grandfather helped build the Norwegian Lutheran Church at 18531 Gresham (now owned by a Korean Congregation). He’s the Paul Bunyan on the street, networker and organizer. Bruce Russell works as a Realtor at Pinnacle Estate Properties, Inc., and has been a major marketing contributor, sign designer and idea man. Chris Sales is President of Northridge South Neighborhood Council and has stepped in as the acting head of Northridge Vision. He is the engine that could and keeps everything moving. Roger Dolin is Director of Public Art Initiative for the Museum of the San Fernando Valley and has been instrumental in bringing art into our neighborhood. Tom Baker works for The Walt Disney Company, (although he is not a rep of Northridge Sparkle) has been instrumental in saving the cement planters placed on Reseda Blvd. by the late BID. He single handedly grew succulents, placed them in each planter from Roscoe to Plummer and is the only individual who waters them. All of these people, have contributed out of pocket money to bring back the pride of a once famous town that was... and is coming back, as a nice place to live. What has the team done? We first started by just cleaning the street with only seven at the helm. The organization now has over 100 volunteers who come out and help, with even more who have financially contributed to the cause. Some of our accomplishments: Tree wells have been dug-up, cleaned out and new foliage planted. Planter boxes have been erected, broken sprinkler systems fixed and the Northridge Village signs created with antique posts. Yellow benches were saved and repainted as well as cement planters revamped and succulents deposited. Red curbs and yellow hydrants were painted. The railroad underpass on Reseda was totally refurbished to eliminate pigeon droppings. The beautiful murals were cleaned of dirt & graffiti. Healthy trees were trimmed & dead ones removed. Painted designs on brick walls and garage doors invite fun & conversation. The whole “Welcome Package” design for Reseda Blvd. has been instrumental in bringing in new developers & new businesses. We are most proud of the historical mural on Rayen & Reseda. But the work continues! More fundraisers and art shows will continue to be produced. What’s ahead for the future? Northridge Sparkle is working with Mayor Eric Garcetti and the non-profit design organization, MAS, to “parklets” as a way of creating a dynamic pedestrian-friendly environment on Reseda Blvd. CSUN Urban Planning is creating a demonstration model of plans focusing on the northeast corner of Parthenia and Reseda Blvd to show at our next Northridge Sparkle celebratory event. An American flag will be erected at the Reseda Blvd median near Parthenia. Art trash bins are ready for placement. A community and school building mural project has been approved and is scheduled to be located at Galaxy Auto Sound, 8956 Reseda Blvd. More historical murals are planned for the new Sharkey’s interior and Northridge Sparkle has the community’s back! The year 2015 will bring lots of new surprises and changes on Reseda Blvd. in Northridge. Our Wish List continues to grow, and now with the support of community leaders, we are able to gain momentum. You can now make tax-deductible contributions. Make donations out to: North Valley Community Fund, c/o Northridge Chamber of Commerce, 9401 Reseda Blvd., Suite 100, Northridge, CA 91324. Here are some future goals of our organization: • Redesign embankment on Reseda • Redesign Parthenia/Reseda RR underpass • Create & install Train Structure • Create park at Tampa & Wilber – DWP property • Create RR overpass Pocket Park at NE corner of Reseda/Parthenia • Spring planting on Parthenia from Tampa to Reseda • Winter clean-up of tumble weeds & plow up proposed Reseda/Parthenia park • Cleaning perimeter campus w/the help of CSUN Dept of Government Affairs work party continued on page 5 SF HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION • Building Pride in our Community • Spring 2015 • Page 4 Your Northridge South Neighborhood Council at Work B By Chris Sales ecause Northridge has already had its groundbreaking Northridge Vision development plan recognized as the basis of any future development plan, the area is already ahead of the curve in recognizing the need for thoughtful and sustainable urban development. One of the key forces in this civic improvement process is your neighborhood council, which walks the tightrope between advocates of development and those of slow growth. Working with local cultural and stakeholder groups like the Museum of the San Fernando Valley and Northridge Sparkle, we have supported new development projects while making sure that it is pedestrian and bike friendly and appropriate in scale. In addition to the Vision program, Northridge has been designated as the site of the first street in the Great Streets Initiative, embracing Reseda Blvd from Parthenia to Plummer. Besides our current activities, your council is looking to the future to see what we can do to make the Northridge South area more pedestrian and public transportation friendly. Recently a project created by graduating seniors in the CSUN Urban Studies and Planning Department investigated a number of traffic problems found in the area and made some suggestions for their improvement. Among the suggestions made was a plan for additional access to the Metrolink Transit Station from the north side of the tracks, including a plan for an elevated crossover to the station. Next they looked at ways to allow safe pedestrian crossing on Parthenia and Wilbur corridor access points where there are no lights installed. Finally, they looked into the possibility of bike and pedestrian access along the Aliso Creek flood control channel, with a first leg beginning between Parthenia and Chase. All three of these projects speak to the need to improve pedestrian and transit access to our community, creating practical and pedestrian friendly access. Northridge is coming to life as a walkable, retail friendly and family friendly neighborhood. One of the projects that reinforce this new life and activity is the creation of Northridge’s first historical mural, at the corner of Reseda and Rayen. The mural, by artist Kevin Cornelius, is based on traditional orange crate art. Many of the older citizens of Northridge will remember when oranges were packed and shipped in colorful crates, each packing company having their own distinctive logo. As a child I remember tiny, candy versions of these orange crates that you would send to relatives and friends as a souvenir of Southern California life. The mural depicts the old Zelzah/Northridge train station, which until the 1960s sat at the northeast corner of Parthenia and Reseda Blvd. Besides the station, the mural depicts a traditional steam train, extensive citrus groves as well as two horses, symbolic of Northridge’s equestrian history. The mural’s text celebrates the founding of Northridge, called Zelzah at that time, in 1910. The mural also depicts an early horseless carriage, foreshadowing the importance of the car to the San Fernando Valley in the years to come. The opportunities of thoughtful development along the Reseda Corridor from Roscoe to Lassen, which supports and enhances our medical, retail and education cores, is something that will benefit all community stakeholders. Interesting Facts about the Houses in Sherwood Forest Dave White, Rodeo Reality Did you know that 38 homes were sold in Sherwood Forest during 2014? The highest price home sold at $1,120,000, as a “standard sale” and the lowest price sold at $420,000 as a “short sale fixer”. Of the 38 sales 4 were short sales. Another interesting fact: Did you know that of the 1100 homes in the Forest, 761 of them have pools and 101 are two stories. Also, when most people think of Sherwood Forest, they think of the huge lots, but of our 1100 homes, 151 of the lots are less than 15,000 sq ft! Hey Kids (and those still Young at Heart) Did you know that many of the streets within Sherwood Forest were named after famous people in Los Angeles & California history? For instance, Amestoy was named after Domingo Amestoy, who was a French Basque immigrate who came to Los Angeles from Argentina in 1851. He and his sons owned Encino Ranch where they raised sheep. The property stayed in the family from 1889 until 1944. Do you know who YOUR street was named after? Why don’t you do some detective work and let us know what you find! Send your message to our email (hoa@sherwoodforesthoa. org) and we’ll print your story in our fall newsletter and on our website! Good Luck! The Sherwood Forest Mom’s Group (SFMG) Whatever happened to the Sherwood Forest Mom’s Group? Well, the simple answer is that children grow up & so do the interests of their moms. This means that somewhere along the line, this social group faded away. However, with the influx of new residents with small children, maybe the time has come to re-start this social group. Some of the activities that the SFMG enacted were play groups & monthly mom’s night out. If anyone is interested in revising this group, drop us a line at the Sherwood Forest message board & will we’ll give you some guidance from some previous Mom’s Members. CSUN Parking The SFHOA has written letters to CSUN, Councilman Mitch Englander and the LA Department of Transportation. As many of you know we have been blocked in by the city placing 1 hour parking restrictions like the sign in this photo. We were told by the Councilman’s office that extending a current district would be faster than trying to establish a new district. We asked DOT to extend District 65 which is West of Lindley and South of Nordoff into Sherwood Forest in September 2014. Councilman Englander’s letter to DOT requesting this extension was written soon afterward. We recently followed up with DOT on this issue and was told it would take at least 1 year for them to get to the research required to extend the permit parking. In the meantime you can ask for 1 side of the Street to be released from the 1 hour parking if you want to. It will not affect the permit process, the permit parking will still be applicable to both sides of the street. CSUN charges $180/semester or $90/fall & spring semester for certain lots if paid before 2/15/15. One of the problems is that they can increase the amount at any time during the semester. Please write to CSUN to voice your opinion of their parking policy.
