Congratulations to Berkeley City College’s
Class of 2016!
I wish to express my sincerest congratulations
to Berkeley City College’s Class of 2016! It is
an honor to be here with you.
Berkeley City College is blessed with
faculty and students who together have created a successful and committed learning
community. The obvious result of their work
is present in each and every one of our graduates. BCC students are serious, committed
to their communities and to their families, to
social justice and to their futures. They do
not give up. The energy, excitement, enthusiasm and rich diversity that form the essence
of Berkeley City College are exemplary and
extraordinary.
The vibrant and diverse environment that we know as Berkeley City College has led our graduates to where they are today. They are
persistent, have overcome any obstacle to their education, have been helped
by teachers, fellow students, and families and friends who love them. The
result is this memorable day. Their experiences at Berkeley City College will
play a large part in their future success. I have no doubt that each in their
own unique way, will make significant contributions to their professions, their
communities and their world.
This is why community college education is important. It provides
opportunities for people who for many reasons might not experience higher
education. As our graduates today, as well as our alumni have demonstrated
time and again, Berkeley City College plays a vital role in enhancing all aspects
of their lives. My best wishes to all of you for a wonderful future.

Class of 2016 Commencement
Introducing Ms. Tenzin Seldon, Keynote Speaker
Tenzin Seldon serves as a consultant for the United
Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and
the Pacific (ESCAP). The Berkeley City College alumna
graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Department of
Comparative Studies at Stanford University. At Stanford, Seldon served as the coordinator for President
Barack Obama’s Interfaith Challenge to foster interfaith understanding among peers. She also organized
numerous discussions with Chinese and Tibetan
scholars, including several notable dialogues with His
Holiness the Dalai Lama.
As the first Tibetan-American Rhodes Scholar at the University of
Oxford, she earned a master’s degree in Philosophy and Comparative Social
Policy. While at Oxford, Seldon was outreach director for Oxford Women
for Women International and was a member of Oxford Union, the university’s renowned debating team.
She serves in various local, national, and international leadership positions, most recently as a consultant for ESCAP, with a focus on the rights
of persons with disabilities in disasters and on youth engagement. She also
has been a guest lecturer at Rangsit University in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
Seldon has worked with Israel/Palestine peace negotiations, as
a Clinton Global Initiative Fellow to reform educational pedagogy in India, and with President Mary Robinson to develop Climate Justice League
chapters in the United States. She was a Tibet Corps professional, both in
the field and virtually, and served with the Central Tibetan Administration’s
(CTA) Department of Information and International Relations. Seldon is
a coproducer of “State of Control,” a documentary which premiered at the
United Nations Film Festival.
Seldon’s work has been recognized throughout the globe. She was
a World Economic Forum Global Shaper and a Harry S. Truman Scholar.
She has received the Asia Pacific Forum’s Youth of Tomorrow Award, OZY
Magazine’s Rising Star Award and was named one of five Civil-Rights Leaders for a New Generation. Berkeley City College

Introducing Ms. Samantha Rushing,
Recipient of the President’s Medallion
Samantha Rushing, recipient of Berkeley City College’s
2016 President’s Medallion, knew early on that she wanted to be an English teacher. Growing up in a rural area
just outside of Stockton, she remembers that many times
in middle and high school, she wished that her teachers
were more inspiring. At age 16, she decided that teaching
would be her professional goal and although there were
a few bumps along the road from the time she graduated
from high school in 2008 until now, that goal has never
wavered.
“I’ve known I wanted to be an English teacher since my junior year of high
school,” Rushing noted. “Growing up, I had lot of teachers, but I changed schools
almost every year and didn’t have teachers that inspired me or who were interested
in what they were trying to teach me until my junior year of high school.”
One teacher, who reminded her of the Robin Williams character in the
movie, Dead Poets Society, was honest and would bring in pine cones and sticks
when lecturing on nature and transcendentalism. “He made us interested in the
subject and it was fun and interesting at the same time,” she recalled.
At Berkeley City College, where Rushing maintained a 3.92 GPA, she credits EOPS and CalWORKs for helping her realize important goals. “They saw me as
a person and respected my character instead of my appearance,” she noted. “They
saw me as a hard worker who was serious about her future.”
The aspiring teacher was hired as an English tutor her first semester at the
college and has helped dozens of students since. “I’ve always had empathy for others, but being with students and tutoring them, one-on-one, has taught me empathy
on a greater level—to understand what students are going through and that we each
have our own difficulties,” she observed. “Writing is easy for me but the fact that
not everyone has that capability helps me to help and understand others who do
not.”
Rushing served as secretary for the Associated Students of Berkeley City
College. She was accepted to UC Santa Cruz, Sacramento State University and California State University, East Bay and she is waiting to hear from UC Davis and UC
Berkeley. Her university major will be English with a minor in psychology.
“ Students should take advantage of all services available,” she advised.
“Get involved on campus; get to know your counselors and create relationships
with people so that you can help each other, and it will be easier for you to make it
through.”

Class of 2016 Commencement
Introducing Ms. Selina V. Gonzalez, Valedictorian
Selina V. Gonzalez, Valedictorian of Berkeley City College’s
Class of 2016, arrived in the United States at age 16, a native
of a town in the mountainous Hidalgo, Mexico region.
“Berkeley City College challenged my way of thinking
and provided me with opportunities to improve and exercise
my leadership skills by helping undocumented students,” she
said. “One of my goals is to advocate for underrepresented
peoples and empower them to follow their dreams.”
Gonzalez is a founding member of the Peralta Community College District’s
first Undocumented Community Resources Center. A member of Phi Theta Kappa
Honor Society, she is a Peralta Foundation Scholarship recipient. Her activities include
membership in BCC’s Latin American Club, the Dreamers Task Force and the Political Science Association. As a former ESL student, she continues to provide math and
English tutoring for others in BCC’s ESL classes. She also has helped to organize
events and has volunteered at Ashby Village, a resource and support center for elders,
and at Berkeley’s Chaparral House, a nursing home facility. She was accepted to UC
Berkeley, UC Davis, and UC Los Angeles.
Introducing Ms. Nicole Rodgers, Salutatorian
Nicole Rodgers, Salutatorian for Berkeley City College’s Class of
2016, is at once motivated and is a motivational mentor to others. She is passionate about political activity, having served at
state, regional and local levels in a variety of advocacy roles for
both disabled and able-bodied students.
“I am hearing impaired and am an advocate for Deaf and
hard of hearing students’ rights, both in the community and at
the local level,” she asserted. “I am so pleased to be graduating
from Berkeley City College; it has been my pleasure to reach out and help students to
not only be the best versions of themselves but an empowering resource for other
students.”
Rodgers’s many community activities include roles as chief justice of the Associated Students of Berkeley City College. Statewide, she serves as one of 30 student
senators for the California Community Colleges Student Senate. That body represents
2.3 million students. Rodgers also was president of BCC’s Global Studies Club and
founded the college’s Disaster Preparedness Club. Working with the City of Berkeley,
she helps to deliver disaster preparedness resources to under served communities.

Introducing Ms. Brianna Rogers, President
Associated Students of Berkeley City College (ASBCC)
and Peralta Community College District Student Trustee
Brianna Rogers, President of the Associated
Students of Berkeley City College (ASBCC),
and Peralta Student Trustee, will graduate in
May with three Associate in Arts degrees:
Communication, Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences; and
Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Arts and
Humanities. And she finished in only two
years.
“I wanted to major in something that I
naturally liked to do,” observed the former
foster youth, now a mother of a high-school aged daughter. “And I’m passionate about communicating with people and empowering others.”
Rogers will transfer to UC Berkeley in the fall. Her major?
Rhetoric. She asserts that mastering rhetorical tools will strengthen her already substantial communications and advocacy skills. After Cal, she plans
to earn a master’s degree in public policy or public administration, then
complete a doctorate in education.
“I found my freedom in education and I want to stick with that,”
she said. “I have been in situations where I’ve felt hopeless and helpless to
advocate for myself and I empowered myself so that I could speak up and
be an advocate for myself and others.”
As ASBCC president, her goal was to create institutional change.
“I decided to be part of the solution to the problem and student government provided a platform for to develop my leadership so that I could help
create other leaders,” Rogers recalls. “The best thing about being a leader is
mentoring and empowering others.”
Her experience at Berkeley City College also has taught her to try
new things. As ASBCC President, and Peralta Student Trustee, she learned
to navigate and use Roberts Rules of Order, understand the Brown Act and
that while opportunities may be disguised as work, one needs to take them.
She also learned that with leadership comes responsibility.

“I found that I like public service and feel empowered when I empower someone else,” she observed. “I found students, faculty, staff and
administrators share a lot more in common than we think.”
She is proud of the role she played in developing BCC’s Student
Equity Plan. As a member of the college’s Student Equity Committee, she
organized BCC’s first Math Town Hall meeting, which focused on problems
and solutions for underrepresented students who had problems understanding mathematics. She learned to work with all levels at the college and the
result was an overwhelming success.
“We partnered with Multimedia Arts students who filmed the event
and placed it on line as part of a larger chat about how to overcome math
problems,” she said. “We joined hands with administration to get the job
done and the data we collected was used in the equity plan.”
Education is a family affair in the Rogers household. Her daughter, Daija Breeland, a freshman at Berkeley High School, will concurrently
enroll this summer at Berkeley City College. The young woman’s goal is to
graduate from high school and BCC with a high school diploma and a concurrent Associate in Science degree.
“During my first semester at BCC, my daughter was in 8th grade
and we were learning some of the same material,” she remembered. “Her
watching me like this, did much for her in ways she doesn’t even realize yet.
She watched me start something and complete it and she saw me change
right before her eyes.”
Presently, mother and daughter are “racing to the finish.” Rogers
plans to finish her Rhetoric degree in 2018, the same year that her daughter
intends to graduate from Berkeley High and BCC.
Rogers is grateful to BCC faculty and staff. The challenges they
provided in and out of class helped her to reach her goals.
“My educational journey at BCC has encouraged me to think more
critically and has definitely lighted a fire that won’t go away,” she explained.
“I found my freedom through education.”
