RECTOR’S REFLECTION: ENVY AND LUST Last week, we said pride is the source of the seven deadly sins. Pride reduces all things to their utility to the self. Envy and lust are pride turned toward other human beings. Envy is a mentality in which an individual’s sense of value and identity is based upon how well they compare to others, particularly rivals. An envious person feels slighted by others’ achievements. An envious person does not wish to celebrate or facilitate another’s success, but to stymie it, subvert it or degrade it. Envious people are deeply insecure and fearful of others because they cannot value themselves unless others are devalued. Lust is similarly based on a need to feel superior to others. A lustful person understands his or her worthiness by his or her sexual exploits. Lust is the enjoyment of being desired by another person and the power such brings. Lust depersonalises others, treating them as objects, conquests, trophies, experiences, mere means to one’s satisfaction. Envy and lust often seem like loving obsession with others, but they are merely forms of self-obsession, of self-love. SUNG EUCHARIST (1970 LITURGY) AT 8 & 10.15AM Gradual Hymn LITURGY OF THE WORD The Gospel Opening Hymn 46, At the Name of Jesus Call to Worship Orange Booklet p3 Confession & Absolution Booklet pp3, 5 Request for God’s Presence, for Purity & for Christ’s Mercy Booklet p5 Prayer for the Week: Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen First Lesson Joshua 5.9-12, OT p181 Psalm 32 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. I acknowledge my sin to you, and I do not hide my iniquity; I will say, “I confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you will forgive the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all who are faithful offer this prayer to you; You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you. Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
