WAT ER WAY
If you can, try watering your
garden in the early morning or
evening. During the hazy summer
months your garden will make the
most of that lovely moisture before
it evaporates in the daytime heat.
Be careful not to overwater as it
can lead to root rot.
S U M M ER S C EN T S
Ever tried growing vegetables in your garden? There are lots of
lovely crops to grow even if you only have the tiniest of spaces.
Or you can even grow a few edibles in the flower border as long
as they’re pretty enough. Plants like courgettes and patty pan
squashes grow really fast and keep on cropping all summer long,
as well as looking wildly exotic in the border. Go for the bright
yellow ones for maximum colour. A wigwam of purple French
beans is both beautiful and yummy while there are masses of
frilly lettuces, leafy mustards and rocket to cut and come again
throughout the season.
B I R D ’S - E Y E V I E W
Hanging bird feeders around your garden is a wonderful way
to bring life and colour to your garden and the birds will love
you for it. Bird baths also help our feathered friends cool down
in the summer months and create an eye-pleasing feature
for your garden.
PRUNING TIME
Make sure you prune early summer-flowering shrubs such as Weigela,
Philadelphus and Deutzia at the right time, just after they flower.
Pruning early in the season ensures a lovely show next year.
Prune back all the flowered stems to strong young shoots lower
down and shape lightly, cutting out about a fifth of the older
stems to near the base. Timing is crucial as the new growth
this season will ripen and be ready to flower in May and
June next year.
