Islamic Summer Camp’2013 Handout 3 The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and The Spider There is a Surah in the Quran called The Spider. (Al-Ankaboot, Surah number 29) Arabic Vocabulary The Cave The Spider Islamic Summer Camp’2013 Handout 3 The Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was born in Makkah, in the year that was known as the The Year of the Elephant. He belonged to the family of Bani Hashim. He was brought up by his uncle, Abu Talib, as his parents had died. As he grew up, he was known for being very honest and truthful and was known as Amin and Sadiq (the trusted and the truthful). He could be seen walking down the streets of Makkah, deep in his own thoughts, he always had a gentle smile, never forgetting to return a greeting to anyone , or to pause and speak a few kind words to children. Children loved him and would always follow him around. He loved nature and quiet and was worried about the problems and suffering of people. He was not like the other people of his time, who would fight amongst themselves and were very cruel. They used to worship idols. He used to climb up Mount Hira, to think and meditate. One day the Angel Jibreel came to him with Allah’s message. He then told his family about Islam and soon the people around him. He told them about Allah and that he was the Messenger of Allah. The 3 people to be seen praying in the Ka’baa before anyone else accepted Islam were the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), his wife Khadeeja and Ali (A.S), the son of Abu Talib. Islamic Summer Camp’2013 Handout 3 He taught people with his words and actions. Soon more and more people began to accept Islam. The rich and powerful people began to get angry because Islam taught that all people were equal and not to worship objects. The Plan Some men from Makkah made a plan to kill The Prophet (S.A.W). But Allah is the best of planners, He knows all the plans. He told Prophet Muhammmad (S.A.W) to leave Mecca and go to Medina. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) asked Imam Ali (A.S) to sleep in his bed, so that he could escape. He trusted Imam Ali (A.S) completely and told him to return the belongings of the people who had kept their things with him to look after. Imam Ali (A.S) at once agreed and thanked Allah for giving him this chance to save the Prophet’s life. His faith was so strong that he actually went to sleep in the Prophet’s bed, even though his enemies were coming. The verse of the Quran was revealed about his brave act: “And among men there is one who sells his life to win the pleasure of Allah. Allah is very kind to His devotees”. (Chapter 2; verse 207) Islamic Summer Camp’2013 Handout 3 The Spider When the men did not find the Prophet (S.A.W), they started hunting for him. They tracked him to a cave called Thawr. The Prophet (S.A) was hiding in the cave. Even though the men from Makkah were getting closer and closer to the cave, the Prophet (S.A.W) was not scared. He had complete faith in Allah. He told his companion who was with him, not to worry, that Allah was with them. Before the men could reach, A spider made a web over the entrance of the cave. When the hunters reached the cave and saw the web, they didn't look inside because if anyone had gone inside, the web would have been broken. So they could not find him and he was saved. This is how Allah used a tiny spider with its delicate web to save the Prophet (S.A.W). There is also a Surah in the Quran called The Spider. It says people who take guardians other than Allah, are like the spider who makes a house for itself but the house is very weak and cannot even protect it. Allah is the best and only one who can protect everything. Islamic Summer Camp’2013 Handout 3 Grammar Concepts In these examples in Arabic the owner of something (possessor) will have a zair For example: Allah's Book Allah is the owner(possessor), therefore Allah will have a zair The object that is owned will have no and no Tanween Book is the object owned (possessed), therefore book will have no and no Tanween = Allah's Book (book of Allah) =Allah's Prophet (prophet of Allah) So now try to translate the example below Solution: (The house) (people) has a zair so it is the owner(possessor) has no and no Tanween so it is possessed Therefore the translation is “ People of the house”(The house's people)
