T
he opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) was held in the stadium
of Zijingang Campus, Zhejiang University on May 4th, 2015, at which the teams from 25
Asian countries and regions were present. Mr. YAO Ke, Vice Chairman of Zhejiang Province
People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of Zhejiang Association for Science
and Technology, Mr. LIN Mingrui, Chairman of APhO and professor of National Taiwan
Normal University, and Mr. HAN Qide, Vice Chairman of CPPCC and Chairman of CAST gave
speeches respectively. After that, Folk Music Orchestra of Zhejiang Province performed Dance
Music of Tea Picking, which revealed the charm of Chinese folk music.
Contestants from each team in turn lit up the icons of their own countries on the screen and took
a group photo. After making a welcome speech, Professor Wu Zhaohui, President of Zhejiang
University invited Mr. YAO, Mr. LIN and XU Yanhao, secretary of the Secretariat of CAST
to officially launch the 16th APhO together. Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese
People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Xu Yan hao, the secretary of CAST Secretariat
to officially launch the contest together.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Islamic culture was readvocated by Turkmenistan government, so Islam is a prevalent religion
now, but some other religions, e.g. the Orthodox Eastern Church and
Zoroastrianism of ancient Turk, also have an impact on its folk customs.

Being one of the birthplaces of ancient civilization, Turkmenistan has left
many legacies for humans which are still of great significance nowadays, and
Ruhnama written by its national leader is a good example.

ingdom of Thailand, lying at the center of the Indo-China Peninsula in
Southeast Asia, is bordered to Burma on the north, to Laos and Cambodia
on the east, to the Andaman Sea on the west and to Malaysia on the south.
Moreover, monks in Thailand enjoy high social status and have the right to
speak in all walks of life, so Thailand is also known as the country of Buddhism.
The royal family of Thailand is well respected by the populace. Influenced by
Buddhism, Thais are tolerant, respectful, grateful and peace-loving.

ietnam, a socialist country in Southeast Asia. Vietnam witnesses
t he h a r mon iou s co - ex ist e nce of d i f fe re nt et h n ic g roups, t he
dominant one being the Kinh nationality. Vietnamese usually regard
themselves as the “Descendants of Emperor Xiong” or the “Descendants
of Fairy Dragon”. In addition, Vietnamese culture is characterized by
“benevolence” and “harmony”, as people attach great importance to family
value and social value. Apart from the Communist culture advocated
by the mainstream of society, Vietnam also has embraced the culture of
Southeast Asia, Europe and America since 1990. Despite the infiltration
of foreign cult ures, Vietnam still boasts its unique cult ural f lavor.

east, extending across much of East Asia and bordering 14 countries.
China, a country with the biggest population in the world, owns 56
distinct ethnic groups. As one of the four ancient civilizations, China
boasts an enduring history and unique traditional culture and custom
influenced by Confucianism with “benevolence” as its core. In modern
times, by absorbing the essence of western civilization and culture after
the adoption of opening up and reform, China has gradually evolved into
a new socialist country. Though Taoism is the only indigenous religion
in China, Buddhism also has a great impact on society. Besides, many
Chinese people believe in other religions like Islam and Christianity.

KAZAKHSTAN
K
azakhstan, the largest landlocked country in the world, is located in Central
Asia and Europe. The country borders China on the southeast, Russia on
the north, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan on the south, and adjoins
a large part of the Caspian Sea on the west. Being the descendants of East
Turkic nomads, the Kazakhs are not only optimistic, outgoing, faithful and just,
but also cherish interpersonal relationships, friendship and fraternity, which
are the basic values of its prairie culture. As a secular state, the Kazakhs have
freedom in believing in different religions, e.g. Islam, Orthodox Eastern Church,
Christianity and Buddhism, which can best reflect their cultural tolerance.
ISRAEL
I
srael, located in the southeast coast of the Mediterranean, is a Middle East
country in Levant, West Asia. Israel has the majority population of Jews and
it is the only state in the world with Jews as its main body. Israel is the only
developed country in the Middle East, and the country with greatest commercial
freedom, press freedom and human development. Since its founding, Israel has
been committed to technological research in science and engineering, making a
significant contribution to science and technology. Israeli culture is interwoven
with Judaism and thousands of years of Jewish history. With various immigrants
from around the world, Israel is socially rich and diverse in its artistic creativity.

I
ndonesia, whose capital is Jakarta, is located in Southeast Asia. As the
largest archipelago country across Asia and Oceania in the world, it is
considered a “Country of Thousand Islands”. Because of its tropical location,
its size and islands, Indonesia enjoys the world’s second highest biodiversity,
only after Brazil. It is influenced by Arabic, Chinese, Malay and European
cultures. Under those foreign influences, Indonesia has developed a unique
fashion of its own, e.g. Kroncong, Dangdut, in combination with exotic
music. Its primary modern music styles are rock, blues, pop, rhythm and
blues. Due to similarity in language and culture, Indonesian music is quite
popular in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and other neighboring countries.
yrgyzstan, located in the hinterland of Eurasian continent, is a
landlocked country with an area of 198,500 square kilometers
in the northeastern Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is not only the hub to
connect Eurasia and Middle East, but also a key strategic area for
leading powers in the world. Kyrgyz literally means “nomads on
the Prairie” and it is named Kirgiz nationality in Chinese. Agroprocessing is an impor tant par t of Kyrgyzstan industrialized
economy. It is rich in mineral resources, but scarce in oil, while
water resource per capita ranks top in the world. Kazakhstan and
Russia are the biggest aid and investment countries for Kyrgyzstan.
