Anthony This month is significant in that Susan B. Anthony, born on February 15, 1820, early on developed a sense of justice and moral zeal. After teaching 15 years, she became active in temperance. Because she was a woman, she was not allowed to speak at temperance rallies. This experience, and her acquaintance with Elizabeth Cady Stanton led her to join the women’s right movement in 1852. Soon after, she dedicated her life to woman suffrage. Ignoring opposition and abuse, Anthony traveled, lectured, and canvassed across the nation for the vote. She also campaigned for the abolition of slavery, the right for women to own their own property and retain their earnings, and she advocated for women’s labor organizations. In 1900, Anthony persuaded the University of Rochester to admit women. Anthony, who never married, was aggressive and compassionate by nature. She had a keen mind and great ability to inspire. She remained active until her death on March 13, 1906. She contributed much to the rights and privileges, we as women, have today. One of Anthony’s quotes is “Oh, if I could live another century and see the fruition of all the work for women!! There is so much yet to be done.” AAUW is one of the organizations that is about making Anthony’s dreams come true. Non-Profits Talking Taxes Free Workshop with Kim Klein Tuesday, March 18, 10 AM CSU Stanislaus Event Center In the past few years we have all become aware that non-profits of all types are struggling. Government funding for needed social services is being cut, fund raising is becoming more difficult, there is more and more demand on the hours we have available for volunteer activities and both the cost for providing services and the need for those services is increasing. The League of Women Voters Stanislaus County in partnership with the Turlock/Modesto Branch of AAUW and the Politics and Public Administration Department at CSU Stanislaus is presenting a workshop for members of local nonprofit groups. The presenter, Kim Klein, is an internationally known fundraiser and consultant. Kim believes it will take a concerted effort on the part of a broad range of non-profit groups to address these issues. She is best known for her work adapting traditional fund raising methods to meet the needs of organizations with small budgets working in the social services sector. Kim believes that non-profits need to develop collaborative strategies to meet common goals. One step in this process is for non-profit groups to come together to identify the common good and areas they can coordinate efforts. Kim feels another important first step is for non-profits to understand the California budget process and tax structure, as well as possible areas of reform. This knowledge will give them the tools to discuss financial issues and options with their membership, potential donors and both local and state legislators. From 10 AM to 12 noon Kim will present information needed by those active in non-profit organizations to understand basic public budget issues. This presentation is appropriate for anyone interested. In the afternoon, from 1 to 3 PM, she will work on a more personal, in depth level with those most active in their organizations. The afternoon session is limited to 25 people. You must attend the morning session to attend the afternoon session. Lunch will be provided for those staying for the afternoon. The entire workshop day is free. Please reserve a spot by e-mail: [email protected], or phone 632-8996 and let me know if you will be attending morning only or all day. I have heard Kim speak at a couple of LWV California state conventions and she is dynamic, informative and entertaining. It is not often we have the chance to tap the expertise of someone with Kim’s extensive background and at no cost. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. - Submitted by Mary Giventer By-Laws Changes As a result of changes with California AAUW, all branches are required to make by-laws changes.
